In his work, Fundamentalism and American Culture, Marsden described fundamentalism (coined in 1920) as a large American Protestant movement "shaped by the longstanding . . . urgent need for positive evangelism, missions, and spirituality." (Marsden, 2006, 119, 252) Marsden pointed out that during the 1800s, Thomas Reid's "Common Sense philosophy," with its "confidence in rational judgments of ordinary people, shaped the Puritan view of Biblical interpretation, later merging with the American evangelical heritage." During the early twentieth century, higher criticism of Scripture and Darwinism led to theological changes in the churches. For fundamentalists, "inerrancy" of Scripture implied a "scientific quality related to the view of truth as directly apprehended facts." Their strong orientation toward the printed word eschewed the mysterious in both exposition and worship. (Marsden, 57, 60-61, 251) Due to "Common Sense" philosophy, fundamentalists adopted a somewhat rationalist view of Scripture. As an early fundamentalist leader, B.B. Warfield emphasized that faith must be grounded in right reason. True to the demands of Common Sense, Warfield saw the effects of the Fall on human consciousness as pervasive but quite limited. Warfield carefully balanced his appeals to objective evidence with the subjective witness of the Holy Spirit. (Marsden, 115, 121) At Princeton Seminary, J. Gresham Machen struggled to preserve both his inherited Presbyterian faith and his intellectual integrity in a world in which the leading intellectuals, and even many theologians, ridiculed traditionalist Christianity. "The Church," he said, "is perishing today through the lack of thinking, not through an excess of it." For Machen, liberals subordinated Christianity to culture while evangelicals seemed to ignore culture in order to maintain a pure Christianity. He believed that since the cultural crisis was rooted in the intellectual crisis, an attempt to bypass culture and intellect, the arts and sciences, would simply make the situation worse. Machen's solution was the consecration of culture. Machen eventually assumed Warfield's mantle as chief intellectual spokesman for conservative Presbyterians. Francis Schaeffer studied briefly under Machen at Westminster Theological Seminary. Schaeffer was an effective popularizer of the Reformed idea that Christianity had powerful implications as a cultural critique. Yet, conservative Reformed scholars were finding it increasingly difficult to remain Renaissance Christian humanists. (Marsden, 137-8, 245)The Reformed traditions encouraged more positive attitudes toward intellect, the organized church, and the ideal of building a Christian civilization. Fundamentalist ambivalence about these subjects can be better understood if seen as reflecting not only immediate experience, but also the conflict between the pietist and the Calvinistic traditions. Within the Calvinist tradition, politics was a significant means of advancing the kingdom. Between 1865 and 1900, the view of social and political order transitioned from a postmillennial to a premillennial (or Pietistic) view of political action as no more than a means to restrain evil. By the 1920s, political conservatism consisted of pietists who would use government merely to restrain evil, of Calvinists preserving Christian civilization, or of Anabaptists opposing all Christian involvement in politics. (Marsden, 7, 86, 92) During the 1920s, fundamentalists were often regarded as anti-scientific and anti-intellectual." Their anti-intellectualism and paranoid style was "shaped by a desire to strike back at everything modern - the higher criticism, evolutionism, the social gospel, rational criticism of any kind." As a result, fundamentalists were losing much of their influence and respectability. Given the various views of eschatology, keeping premillennial teachings in the background became necessary for establishing a respectable and self-consciously conservative coalition against modernism. (Marsden, 7, 119, 199)Traditionally, American evangelicalism viewed God's redemptive work as manifested in the spiritual and moral progress of American society. Within fundamentalism, different beliefs concerning eschatology resulted in two very different worldviews. (Marsden, 38, 47-9, 63) Whereas premillennialists were less hopeful concerning progress, postmillennialists were optimistic about the spiritual progress of the culture.Nevertheless, premillennialists and postmillennialists regarded the state of American civilization with a mixture of hopeful loyalty and increasing alarm. Fundamentalists saw the fundamental issues as theological. In order to unite evangelical America, a new combination of revivalist, conservative, and premillennial traditions emerged. By 1925, the theological aspect of fundamentalism merged with its concern for the social and moral welfare of the nation. The battle for the Bible developed into a battle for civilization. Combined with changing mores in the culture, fundamentalists experienced profound ambivalence toward the surrounding culture. Marsden pointed out that fundamentalism of recent decades differs from that of the 1920s due to its "deep involvement in mainstream national politics." (Marsden, 153, 161-4, 231-2) Marsden examined the extraordinary growth in political emphasis and power of the more recent movement. As the era of faith in science and progressive consensus ended, the countercultural upheaval of the 1960s intervened. "In the 1970s distress over rapidly changing public standards regarding sexuality and the family combined with longstanding anti-communist patriotism to make fundamentalistic evangelicals ripe for political mobilization." Without much reflection on how practical political campaigns fit in with continuing predictions that the Rapture and end-times would commence in a few years, an ideal of cultural transformation reemerged as one of the most conspicuous traits of the movement. The central cultural paradox of fundamentalism was thus even more dramatically pronounced then ever. . . . America was simultaneously Babylon and God's chosen nation. Premillennial doctrine and postmillennial rhetoric mixed, reflecting a longstanding cultural ambivalence in the American evangelical heritage. As implicitly postmillennial political rhetoric was flourishing; premillennial end-time scenarios became more popular than ever." (Marsden, 241-249, 256)Modern historiography assumes that human and natural forces shape the course of history and its basic model is something like a biological concept of development.Prone to a more literal interpretation of Scripture, premillennialists begin with the assumption that ongoing warfare between God and Satan shapes history. On the other hand, postmillennialists saw human history as reflecting an ongoing struggle between cosmic forces of God and Satan, each well represented by various earthly powers, but with the victory of righteousness ensured. These totally opposed views of history lay at the heart of the conflict and misunderstanding between theological liberals and their fundamentalist opponents. (Marsden, 38, 47-9, 63) Considering context of evidence is one guideline for good historical writing. Marsden met this guideline by pointing out that the dispensationalist view seems less eccentric if placed in the context of the whole development of Western historiography. Marsden concludes, "[I]dentification of cultural forces, such as those with which this book is concerned, is essentially a constructive enterprise, with the positive purpose of finding the gold among the dross." Since we are limited by our culturally determined experience, Marsden states that we should ask God for grace to recognize our limitations as we "carefully identify the cultural forces which affect the current versions of Christianity." (Marsden, 259-260) In his work, Marsden described numerous events within the context of American culture that provided insight concerning the growth and development of fundamentalism during the last century. Marsden's description of fundamentalists as "militant" seems to describe the fundamentalism of my childhood. In his description of fundamentalists and their political activism during recent decades, Marsden provided relevant evidence, or immediacy, meeting a second guideline for good historical writing. In his discussion of B.B. Warfield, J. Gresham Machen, and Francis Schaeffer, Marsden identified causal connections. As a cognitive historian, Marsden met a third guideline for good historical writing by considering intellectual influence, wrestling with questions in history of ideas.Avoiding assumptions, Marsden met a fourth guideline by providing positive, specific evidence concerning events during the last century. Marsden addressed numerous issues within American culture, including the fundamentalist view of Scripture, the Reformed view of culture, as well as the role of differing eschatologies in political activism. In his work, Fundamentalism and American Culture, Marsden demonstrated a thorough, objective understanding of fundamentalism as a cultural phenomenon. Marsden's work would be a valuable addition to the personal library of anyone who seeks a deeper understanding of fundamentalism.

I heard George Marsden lecture at Princeton Theological Seminary a few months ago and was sufficiently impressed to want to try one of his books. So I picked this one. This is not my field and I wouldn't know a dispensational premillennialist if I tripped over one, but for the most part I was able to follow Marsden's chronology and analysis. The details of the doctrinal factionalism among the major Protestant denominations in the 19th century left me bewildered for a while but eventually I got the hang of it - and I was glad I did.For a semi-secular urban type like me, fundamentalism has always been associated with the south and epitomized (for better or worse) by William Jennings Bryan at the Scopes monkey trial. So I was surprised to learn that its roots lie in learned theological disputes among Presbyterians and Baptists in the north after the Civil War. And unlike the fundamentalism of today, the fundamentalism of 100 years ago largely avoided engagement with the political process.Documenting and explaining this century-long transformation is Marsden's task and he does a terrific job. The writing is clear, the approach is fair, and the occasional flashes of dry wit are welcome. The original book was published in 1980 but the new 2006 edition has an additional chapter that ties the recent rise of the Moral Majority and its companions to the larger history. If you would like shed some preconceptions and understand more about the culture, theology, and politics of fundamentalism, I can't imagine there is a better place to start.

Fundamentalism is the movement arising among Christians in the early 20th century who fervently defended the fundamental doctrines of Christianity while opposing modernist liberalism. In his Fundamentalism and American Culture, George M. Marsden investigates the historical context and ideological roots of what came to be American fundamentalist Christianity, recognizing complex influences from nineteenth-century traditions like revivalism, holiness, and patriotism. Marsden says, "Fundamentalists were evangelical Christians, close to the traditions of the dominant American revivalist establishment of the nineteenth century, who in the twentieth century militantly opposed both modernism in theology and the cultural changes that modernism endorsed" (4). His interpretation of the phenomenon of fundamentalism treads a middle ground between those who reduce it to a purely social reaction to the emerging trend of modernist thought, and someone like Ernest Sandeen who views fundamentalism as essentially theological (201). Some evaluations from observers of the height of the fundamentalist frenzy saw it as hollow and brief; the Christian Century said in 1926, "it is henceforth to be a disappearing quanitity in American religious life, while our churches go on to larger issues..." (192). Marsden does not relegate fundamentalism to the position of a short-lived radical sect, but sees it as a significant movement with deep roots and continued relevance to today's American evangelicalism. As a result, he devotes about half of his book to in depth account of late 19th and early 20th century currents of Christian thought.Marsden focuses on three major themes. First, he highlights a tension within fundamentalism--the tendency at times to preserve the perceived identity of American culture (viewing America as Israel), and at other times to take on the identity of a separatist minority sect (viewing America as Babylon). Second, he studies the prominent movements of Christian thought in American evangelicalism before the emergence of fundamentalism. He sees deep roots in America's revivalism, pietism, the popularity of holiness, and middle-class Victorian values. Third, Marsden observes a wavering stance among fundamentalists regarding science and the intellect. On one hand, the scientific "common sense" type of principles of 17th century philosopher Francis Bacon allowed the average person clearly to see the plain facts of God evident in Scripture. On the other hand, this same scientific approach allowed proponents of Darwinian evolution to discard the unrealistic, supernatural, miraculous accounts found in the Bible. Naturalism and evolution were powerful enemies of Christians who wanted to maintain the fundamental supernatural tenets of the faith. Increasingly over the years, anti-evolution became a more unifying passion than even adherence to Christian orthodoxy. Marsden comments, "Many people with little or no interest in fundamentalism's doctrinal concerns were drawn into the campaign to keep Darwinism out of America's schools... The more clearly [fundamentalists] realized that there was a mass audience for the message of the social danger of evolution, the more central this social message became" (170).After chronologically recounting the origins of fundamentalism, its peak in 1920-1925, as well as the subsequent gradual growth of fundamentalist ideology through denominations and universities, Marsden shares his interpretation of the movement. Fundamentalism was initially a religious assertion against the threat of modernism, but the event of World War I gave fundamentalism crucial characteristics. War-related crisis provided an occasion for paranoia and militant defense of religious views. Marsden compares evangelicals experience of encroaching modernism to the "traumatic cultural upheaval" of cross-cultural immigration (204).I find quite helpful Marsden's reluctance to paint the fundamentalist movement as either purely theological or purely social. By resisting extremes, Marsden's eyes are open to the great and sometimes even contradictory complex issues informing fundamentalism. He says it is "a mistake to reduce religious behavior to its social dimensions" and admirably acknoweledges the power of spiritual forces and deep-seated convictions (203). I wish he had made some value judgments, even if tentative and qualified, and used a biblical standard to grant the reader practical ideas for how to move forth with knowledge of historical fundamentalism. What traps and misconceptions did fundamentalists fall into that contemporary evangelical may be vigilant to avoid? For what elements of fundamentalism can we be grateful and which can we even strive to emulate? This desire of mine, though, is just because I'm more interested in ideas than events. I prefer philosophy to history. People who love history may have more fun reading this than I did. Marsden's objectivity seems appropriate to a scholarly book in the genre of history.

An excellent book for Christisns and non-Christisns. If you are concerned for the United States this is a must read book.. We are, according to Bible prophecy, heading toward a one-world government. Can we stop it? Not if it is in God's will for it to proceed. Can we delay it? Only if we repent of our sins as a nation and ask for forgiveness. Salvation is an individual act, but we also see in the Bible, God judges Nations for their sin as a whole. We have rejected the message of the Bible and this book lays out the oath because of that rejection. Read with an open mind, then commit to God and He will be your Guide.

I wanted to really like this book. I like the content of the book but there are so many grammatical and typographical errors that it is frustrating. I have to stop and reason what the author is trying to say. It may be that I ordered the Kindle book that was very poorly digitized for the ebook. I hope the hard copy didn't have this many errors.

This book, published in over a decade ago, shares insight into what we are seeing before our very eyes today--fulfillments of what this insider learned for himself. I highly recommend this book for information and for knowledge of our world today and your part in it..

Well researched. Sad to say, it is all true as many other sources have documented. It is faith building to see actual events converging with biblical prophecy. Remember, for Christians, it does have a joyful ending.

I consider this book is a must read if you want to know where our United States of America is headed. It is a " Who's Who" , ;" What's What"; " Where's Where " ; " When's When " ; and " How's How " book that is concise and loaded with facts . It has been written enough years ago that many things that this author has contained in it have now come true. With the current events of this election time have you concerned about what is going on , get this book.

Everyone should read this book, if you are open minded you can. See this stuff happening before your very eyes

I dove into this book looking for business advice and walked away with so much more. Jessi shares life experiences that are real, raw, valuable and can be applied to both business and life in general. Her perseverance should be studied to determine what her “it” factor is, to allow others who have suffered horrific abuse to thrive as she has. The number of obstacles, setbacks and circumstances she has had to overcome to get Cheekys to where it is today is simply incredible. She has so much to share with such a broad audience. This book will leave you inspired, in awe and wanting to “be pretty”. A must read.

If you’ve ever felt marginalized, unheard, or discounted- this book is for you. If you’ve been hitting brick walls in your business, your job, your personal life- this book will inspire you to break through those walls with your head held high and drive in your heart. I was so inspired by Jessi Roberts’ story. I think you will be too. In more ways than one.

I just love Jessi's approach to this book! Real down home life 💚

Jessi’s story is one that definitely needed to be told I couldn’t put this down and finished it in one day. Her story is gut wrenching, compelling, honest, and beautiful.

Well what a day, what an over a year writing journey and what a life... putting all of this out there was one of the hardest most vulnerable things I have ever done. I hope that you enjoy this book, I hope it moves you and I hope you are able to take from it exactly what you need in your life today. Thank you sincerely for being a part of this with me! ~ Jessi

If you are any sort of woman business owner BUY this book. It is beyond inspirational, full of knowledge & reminds you that it takes GRIT to keep on pushing. I am so glad I discovered this book!!!

couldn't put it down and am anxiously waiting for book #2 ... it is that good <3

Tahca Ushte (Lame Deer) was a Lakota medicine man from a land now known as South Dakota ("Sioux" is a white name that insults the Lakota). His government-issued name was John Fire. He was born some time between 1895 and 1903, and died in 1976. His parents were of the last generation to be born wild and free. Two of his grandfathers had been at the battle of Little Big Horn, Custer's last stand, and one of them survived the massacre at Wounded Knee.Lame Deer's early years were spent in a remote location, where they had no contact with the outside world. He never saw a white man until he was five. At 14, he was taken away to a boarding school, where he was prohibited from speaking his language or singing his songs. The class work never went beyond the level of third grade, so Lame Deer spent six years in the third grade. He eventually gained renown for being a rebellious troublemaker. When he was 16, he went on a vision quest, and discovered that he was to become a medicine man.Sons destined to become medicine men were often removed from school by their families, because schooling was harmful to the growth of someone walking a spiritual path. One father drove away truancy officers with a shotgun. For medicine men, the skills of reading and writing had absolutely no value. When Lame Deer was 17, his mother died, and the family fell apart. The white world was closing in, making it hard for his father to survive as a rancher. He gave his children some livestock and wished them good luck. By that time, the buffalo were dead, their land was gone, many lived on reservations, and the good old days for the Lakota were behind them.Lame Deer straddled two worlds, the sacred path of Lakota tradition, and the pure madness of the "frog-skinners," -- people who were driven by an insatiable hunger for green frog-skins (dollar bills). The frog-skinners were bred to be consumers, not human beings, so they were not fun to be around.Lame Deer spent maybe 20 years wandering. He made money as a rodeo rider, clown, square dance caller, potato picker, shepherd, and so on. He always avoided work in factories or offices, "because any human being is too good for that kind of no-life, even white people." He enjoyed many women, did more than a little drinking, stole a few cars, and shunned the conventional civilized life.Between jobs he would return to his reservation and spend time with the elders. During World War II, just before Normandy, he was thrown out of the Army when they discovered that he was 39, too old. Soon after, he abandoned the frog-skin world and became a full time Indian, walking on the sacred path of a medicine man.For the Lakota, the Black Hills were the most sacred place in their world. To retain possession of them, they surrendered much of what became Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas. The treaty declared that the Black Hills would remain Indian territory "for as long as the sun shined." Soon after, whites discovered gold in the Black Hills, and flooded into the holy lands with drills, dynamite, whiskey, and prostitutes. The Lakota were horrified by the behavior of these civilized Christians. The frog-skinners exterminated the buffalo, and replaced them with livestock. Buffalo were beings of great power and intelligence. They even had a sense of humor. Lame Deer said that if buffalo were used in bullfighting, the cocky matadors would promptly be trampled and gored into extinction. Cattle were dullards that had the power bred out of them. Sheep and goats would stand calmly while you cut their throats. To provide additional vegetation for the dim-witted livestock, the prairie dogs had to go. Ranchers launched an intensive poisoning campaign that also killed more than a few children and pets. With the prairie dogs gone, there was far less prey for the wolves, coyotes, bobcats, foxes, badgers, hawks, and eagles. A diverse, thriving prairie ecosystem was replaced with monocultures of destructive sub-intelligent exotic species.Sheep were amazingly frail. They often fell over, with their feet in the air, and couldn't get back up again. If the shepherd didn't rescue them, they would bloat up and die. Lambs often had to be hand-raised because their mothers didn't recognize them or feed them."There was great power in a wolf, even in a coyote. You have made him into a freak -- a toy poodle, a Pekingese, a lap dog. ... You have not only altered, declawed, and malformed your winged and four-legged cousins; you have done it to yourselves. ... You live in prisons which you have built for yourselves, calling them homes, offices, factories."In the 1880s, the Indians of the west were in despair, and the Ghost Dance movement was spreading from tribe to tribe. It was a grand magic act intended to bring a new world into existence via sacred song and dance. The dead would come back to life, the buffalo herds would return, the whites would get sent back home, and the civilized world would be rolled up like a dirty old carpet -- the cities, mines, farms, and factories. This would reveal a healthy unspoiled land, with many teepees and animals, as it once had been.Dancers were not allowed to possess things from the white world: liquor, guns, knives, kettles, or metal ornaments. They would dance for four days. Whites feared an armed uprising, so they attacked the dancers. Hundreds of unarmed Indians were murdered at the Wounded Knee massacre. The magic dancing did not succeed, but today many can see that a great healing is badly needed. Obviously, the madness cannot continue forever. Lame Deer was clear: "The machine will stop." He said that a young man would one day come who would know how to turn it off. "It won't be bad, doing without many things you are now used to, things taken out of the earth and wasted foolishly." We will have to learn how to live more simply, and this will be good for one and all.Lame Deer asked Richard Erdoes to help write his story, to pass along important information. He included several chapters describing the sacred culture of the Lakota. He wanted hold up a mirror for us, to give us a different perspective, to feed a sane voice into our lost and confused world. "We must try to save the white man from himself. This can be done if only all of us, Indians and non-Indians alike, can once again see ourselves as part of this earth."Richard Adrian ReeseAuthor of What Is Sustainable

I'm rereading this book now for about the 5th time. I read it for an anthropology class about 15 years ago and it was so compelling that I reread it, recommended it to friends and then ultimately lent it to a friend who was going through an existential crisis who needed it so badly she kept it. It's profound without intending to be. It's simply about this man "Lame Deer" who is the last of a generation of Lakota Natives to learn about their traditions and values. You feel his lament for the rapidly dying culture while relishing in its beauty. This book will make you want to reconnect with whatever you hold dear and give up pursuit of meaningless things.

Lame Deer Seeker of VisionsI highly recommend this book describing the life of John Lame Deer if you are interested in the history of Native Americans or their view of The United States. These are the memoirs of Lame Deer that he worked on with Richard Erdoes. Lame Deer describes how Native Americans dealt with whites taking their land through lies and massacres. He also describes trying to keep his culture alive. We, the reader, are taken to Native American ceremonies. We are shown what happens and why. Lame Deer also explains how they have changed through whites interference. To me, this book also gives the best description of how Native American people are connected to the land.We also get the long life of Lame Deer. That guy lived quite a life. From criminal to Medicine Man, Lame Deer gives us frank description of all points in his life. For me, the descriptions of the ceremonies and the myths behind them got a little tedious, but yet it is important to have a complete description of them. This book is a good reminder that the history of Native Americans is not over. It continues as does their battles for their sacred lands. As a dominant culture we have a tendency to think, we have to move on. That is the past. This book describes how Native Americans are trying to do this, but their ancestors were massacred. They were not even allowed to keep their culture. It was taken from them at gun point.

According to the great John (Fire) Lame Deer, the eating of guts evolved into a contest. “In the old days we used to eat the guts of the buffalo, making a contest of it, two fellows getting hold of a long piece of intestines from opposite ends, starting chewing toward the middle, seeing who can get there first; that’s eating. Those buffalo guts, full of half-fermented, half-digested grass and herbs, you didn’t need any pills and vitamins when you swallowed those.”So much more than a book...

I originally read this book back in the 70's and purchased it for my goddaughter to read. As a refresher, I went through it again before sending it on to her. Lame Deer's sense of humor alone makes the book well worth reading. His insight to things is wonderful and his explanation of what he believes as a Medicine Man is fascinating. What really struck me, after studying Greek Mythology and going through the Illiad and the Odyssey is how man has distanced himself from nature as a result of monotheism versus polytheism. In the latter there was a god for everything, which caused the believers to have respect for the things that those gods represented. If nothing else, it taught, as Lame Deer explains, that man is not separate from, but an integral part of nature, yet we have come to lose our respect for it. We treat it as though it is our servant and that the relationship is no longer one, but now quite separated. The sense of interdependence has waned considerably. The book is an easy read as far as time spent reading it. It is the thinking and reflecting you will be doing afterward that will be your reward for having read it.

Introduction Welcome to a Skit Book for Every Group! Sure, skits are a great idea for youth ministry. They make learning active and visual. They build relationships as kids learn to work together. They brighten meetings with humor while driving home important points. But only if your kids can act. If your group is like most-that is, if it's not composed entirely of drama-club presidents and speech-team captains-your experiences with skits may be nothing to write home about. If some of your kids are 'theatrically challenged," you may find yourself avoiding skits entirely or using the same few talented kids again and again. Your dilemma: Should you keep less skilled members of your group off the stage, making them feel left out? Or should you use everybody and limp through some ineffective and embarrassing efforts? There's a better way, you know-goof-proof skits. First there was the popular Goof-Proof Skits for Youth Ministry. And now, to keep your store of sure-fire scripts full, here's volume 2! Real Fun, Real Truths-for Real Kids. What do you want in a skit? Fun? It's here-from pratfalls to parables to TV show parodies. Solid, Bible-based messages? They're here, too-on important topics, including decision-making, violence, and inviting others to the group. But you get more than sound messages and plenty of fun with Goof-Proof Skits for Youth Ministry 2. You get help to make each skit work. Every script in this book has been prepared with real kids in mind. You'll find no page-long speeches to stumble through, no delicate emotional nuances to steamroll, no split-second timing to fumble. The language is simple, and the feelings are straightforward. Best of all, Goof-Proof Skits for Youth Ministry 2 gives you innovative cues to help you draw the best possible reading-and the most meaning-from every line of dialogue. Every script provides simple facial-expression symbols to show kids instantly how to put the right feeling into each line. To help beat the "monotone syndrome" and ensure that everyone catches key concepts, words that should be spoken with emphasis are set in capital letters. The result? Skits that build confidence. Skits that let you cast practically anybody. Skits that cut mistakes to a minimum so that the message can't miss. Skits that work in any group-dramatically inclined or not. Goof-Proof Skits for Youth Ministry 2 may not turn your kids into Tony award winners. But when it comes to getting all your kids involved-and getting the message across ungarbled-you'll find no better or easier way than with this series of resources. Use this book in your youth meetings, retreats, Sunday school, Bible studies, or worship services-with or without rehearsal-whenever you want to make a point in a fresh, funny, memorable way. With each script, you'll find Scriptures to study, a relevant topic to explore, easy setup ideas, thought-provoking discussion questions, and optional extras. You'll find so much, in fact, that you can turn each skit into a complete youth group session of its own-if you want to. And After the Skit? Youth ministry doesn't end when the skit's over-so the skits in this book don't end there either. You can take advantage of the discussion questions in the "For Post-Play Pondering" section to help your kids dig deeper into the skit topics. As you lead kids in post-play pondering, remember that variety and interaction help make discussions exciting for teenagers. Use large groups, small groups, pairs, and trios. Or have kids number off from one to five, then have all the ones respond to the first question, all the twos respond to the second, and so on. Or have kids write their own questions about the topic based on what they saw in the skit. The possibilities are almost endless! A great skit can be one of your most powerful tools for helping teenagers grow in faith-if it works. The goof-proof skits and post-play ponderings in this book are your chance to get more of that dramatic power off the page-and into the hearts of your group members.

I love these skits and so do the kids. I have mainly used them at summer Bible camp. They can be hilarious and teaching a Bible story at the same time. Good with 2nd graders through college.

Good skit suggestions.

Really good book for puppet skits.
