A lot of the book is devoted to the importance of developing plans and action for the Third Stage of life but then remains very sketchy on the actual details. In fact, one could read the book as an informercial for Encore.org, which the author is involved with.

To put this into perspective, I've done a lot of research on this particular subject so my opinions are based on that. If you're new to the subject, it provides a good but not great explanation. However, if you're looking for more than inspiration, then this book is essentially of minimal use. An alternative that's very good is the Encore Career Handbook by the same group.

Not a world-beating best seller here, but a good little book.

I love this book. It’s my 3rd copy. A must if you work in the customer service industry.

The book presents in a readable and pleasant way the principles of the values-based success in customer service and retail excellence of Nordström. Lessons for everyone in service business and especially in retail.

This book contains many tidbits of a successful “customer first mentality” including stories and examples. While it begins to get repetitive and drag towards the later sections, this is a great read for anyone who interfaces with customers or manages sellers as part of their profession.

The main purpose of this review is to compare the three free versions of Beowulf available for kindle. Which I actually did before, but then Amazon decided to re-version all the common domain books or something, so here we are...This version is a translation by Lesslie Hall. It's a very good re-telling of the poem--but it's hard to tell the difference between the margin notes and the text. Compared to what the formatting was when I read this version, this is great, with some linked notes, side-notes and foot-notes distinguished by different margin alignment, line numbers appearing in a reasonable location, and the text appearing as a poem. It's still a bit of a mess, though. And the text size is absurdly large. I did find it the best translation, however.Another good thing about this version is the extras, which includes discussion, historical information, glossary, and a summary of the tale so you know what's going on. All of these feature active links within the text.The next free version is Beowulf. It's the Gummere version, which isn't as good of a translation, but it's properly formatted, has a few linked notes, and only the bare minimum of extras (like story summary or glossary). It would probably be best if you just want to read the story, but not enjoy it.The last version is a translation by William Morris and A.J. Wyatt: The Tale of Beowulf Sometime King of the Folk of the Weder Geats. It has more discussion and extras than the Gummere, but less than this one, and the text seems to be okay, although I didn't read as much of it.Anyway, I hope this has all been helpful and informative and that you find the version of Beowulf that is right for you.

(I had to order 2 of these, since the first one was full of notes and highlighting.) This unassuming little paperback is the best Beowulf translation ever written. Far superior to Heaney's. I once taught this book to a class of disaffected high school seniors, who were subsequently inspired to research Anglo-Saxon armor and weaponry, write comparisons with contemporary horror films and have animated class discussions about the limitations of heroism. Raffles' feel for his material is sheer genius.

Beowulf itself is one of the classics of epic poetry. This translation uses alliterative verse similar to the Old English original, and uses some words that are now (or perhaps always were) very obscure. I read this aloud to my son, who is very into monsters and knights and such, as bedtime reading and he loved it, despite the archaic language. So, as a translation of a poem intended to be recited aloud, it succeeds.("You're reading Beowulf to a four year old?" said Relative X "It's above his grade level! And it's so violent!" Well, it's no more violent than many of the "kid's shows" Relative X lets him watch on TV., and maybe he'll learn some good vocabulary words, and he gets an appreciation that there are good stories to be found even in the old dusty books without pictures!)The Kindle edition was formatted terribly, with the subheads in the same font and indentation as the actual poem. The end notes were also laid out very poorly.Thus, 4 stars for the translation, 2 for the layout and an average of 3 stars.

So...as you can probably figure out from the rest of the reviews, this is the Gummere translation, which even I as a non-English-scholar can tell isn't the best translation.BUT there are three different free versions of Beowulf on the kindle, and I'm actually writing this review to sort them all out. (which is why may be too generous in giving stars). First there is this unloved version by Gummere. It's just the poem with no frills or dazzles, and the notes that are there are properly end-noted and linked.Then there is a translation by Lesslie Hall: Beowulf: An Anglo-Saxon Epic Poem, which is quite good--but the formatting is...a challenge. All the side-notes and foot-notes are left in the text, which isn't formatted into a poem anyway, so if you just want to read the poem (like I did), well, good luck to you. It also has a bunch of informative things at the beginning; a discussion of the translation, character list, glossary, things like that.The last version is a translation by William Morris and A.J. Wyatt: The Tale of Beowulf Sometime King of the Folk of the Weder Geats. It has some informative things at the beginning and end, is formatted properly as a poem (though it seems to lack any in-text notes) and um... I haven't tried to read it yet, so I can't say how good or bad the translation is.Anyway, I hope this has all been helpful and informative and that you find the version of Beowulf that is right for you.

My family's go-to answer book is the "Believer's Bible Commentary" (BBC). A whole-Bible commentary provides more detail than a Bible handbook or study Bible, but less than a dedicated commentary (e.g. Romans). Doctrinally, all 5 commentaries below may be classified as evangelical and dispensational.EDITIONSThe black and blue edition is much thicker than the older orange dust jacket edition. Another reviewer said the second edition "has no updates." But it has 130 more pages, based on Amazon's count (2592-2462=130). Nelson advertises "14 pages of 4-color maps...and other study helps." I was raised in Christian households (Tridentine Roman Catholic on one side and Missionary Baptist on the other), and I have always owned a Bible of my very own. I even had periodic bouts of feeling drawn to study it, but I never really answered that call, as it were, until 2016. At first, I started going through book by book according to a reading schedule in my app, and I was progressing very well just me and the Holy Spirit and the Bible.But then I ran into Ezekiel and the proverbial brick wall was met. Ezekiel is tough. Like Revelation is tough, Ezekiel is difficult, and understanding ancient symbols from Eastern culture is important. I knew I needed help, and so I bought a commentary. That's how I came to own this book.It's beautiful. The binding is high quality. I have written and highlighted in it, and the paper is excellent stock for allowing this. So here is a list of the Pros and Cons as I see them. Your mileage may vary.1.) The introductory articles to the various sections and individual books are wonderful. Seriously, wonderfully good information. The history of the book and the authorship of the book as well as various challenges and responses from different schools of thought on origins of the text are given. These are given clearly and somewhat fairly (though a conservative Dispensationalist bias is both evident and totally disclosed. It's not sneaky or secretive).2.) Don't even think about choosing this book if you want to have answers to your more difficult dilemmas with Scripture. That is not what this book does. Want commentary on the Midianite virgins in Numbers? The absolute moral depravity of the Patriarchs in places? You will not find this here. At. All. You'll need much more in-depth books for that.3.) If what you need is something to guide you through a superficial first reading or just to clarify symbols in some of the prophecies and parables? This book will do that VERY well for you.4.) This book is seriously, unapologetically, and nakedly Dispensationalist and conservative. If that isn't going to work for you...get another book. I am a Lutheran. I love my Baptist and evangelical brothers and sisters in Christ, so I was able to smile at some of the more obvious bits and continue my reading without bother. If you, however, will be frustrated by the constant repetition of dispensation ideology, get another book.I hope that helps you choose. These were my thoughts on the book. I am now in a place in my studying where I require much more in-depth works to help me along, but I STILL pull this massive tome out for those introductory articles on the books and on the various groupings of books in Scripture. They are worth the purchase of the entire book all by themselves.Keep in mind that this book is HUGE. You won't want to carry it around with you, but if you keep it on your nightstand or next to the chair where you spend you quiet time in the Word...it can be a really useful addition to your home library.

This is a wonderful Bible commentary. I have the first edition and I've been using it for years. I purchased three of the second editions for my children. The content of the book is still excellent. But, the print is too small for my eyes to see very clearly. It also appears to be printed in a very dark grey ink instead of black ink, and that also makes it hard for me to see. I still gave these commentaries to my children, believing their younger eyes will probably not have the problems I do. But, I still wish book publishers would consider the needs of all of their readers when deciding how to print a book. I gave this 4 stars due to the printing issue. But, it's a 5-star book in content. It's great to have an entire Bible commentary in just one volume.

Hands down the best "Devotional" commentary I have ever used! Now let me be clear...if you are trying to "Study" the Bible, as in...go into great detial about the greek and Hebrew, how many times a word was used, etc. Ie, an Academic Commentary, this is not for you. This is for the person who desires to know GOD, not to know about him. It is very simple and easy to understand. I highly recommend it as a companion to your Bible reading, not Bible studying. You will gain tremendous insight and will not be disappointed. Also don't be put off by the price, you can find it for less than half digitally.

Love this bible commentary. I had been looking for a simple, non-academic commentary — think NOT Matthew Henry. This is it. I’m so glad I got it. If you are a lay person (regular bible-loving Christian) you will really enjoy this commentary. It’s a HUGE book. You can’t really carry this around. *See pics.
