Great book for my little level 2 reader! We own the 3 books in the Dark, Dark Room series and my 7-year old daughter loves the stories. She thought it was really neat to get a book that contains similar stories that she could read to her parents instead of us reading them to her. I do have to help her sound out a couple of words here and there but she's been able to read this book pretty well on her own. I would say that it's between a level 2 and 3 on the reading scale. She does not think the stories are scary at all, but they (along with the illustrations) are fun. This book also tries to throw in a little humor. The book may not be great for kids under 5 or if your child scares easily, but I really don't see anything too scary in here-base your purchase decision off what your child generally enjoys reading. We got this just in time for Halloween and it has really been enjoyable to read with my daughter.

Our resident 6-year-old recently discovered that reading is not only something he has to master at school, but something he enjoys. The books he brings home from the school library are often non-fiction. He looks for imaginative fiction, but I think he finds much of the beginning readers fiction kind of sappy, with little action or humor."Ghosts!" provides a terrific alternative. The seven stories and poems are a little creepy, with a big dose of cheerful humor and funny illustrations. He is going to read one of the stories, "A Little Green Bottle," to his class. This is the first such class project and he is a little nervous. I noticed on his critique sheet that he marked the story "great" and wrote that he liked it because "it is so weird." Coming from a 6-year-old, that is high praise.

It's hard to find scary stories for first graders. I am a first grade teacher and my kids loved this book. It's scary, but also fun. Things like a child bully ghost haunting a classroom and a ghost cat. Great introduction to folktales genre for little ones. If my class earns enough points in the week, we have a campfire stories on Friday. I set up a fake campfire, and we eat s'mores and read ghost stories. Have read these tales and they love it!

I found some of the stories a little startling for my intended reader but overall the stories are appropriately spooky and ghastly as intended.

I remember these stories from when I was younger and my 5 yr old loves them too. Perfect little "scary" stories for the younger kids with great illustrations.

My four year old really likes witches and scary stories. The stories are old folks tales or some similar to Tales to tell in the Dark, but they are a little scary. Good introduction to scary stories though if your kid wants to start watching scary movies. Test the waters this way so you don't have to deal with nightmares!

Loved this book as a child, just ordered it for my two boys (5 and 6) they loved it too! These are fun ghost stories for the family!

I remember reading this as a kid and was excited for get it for my daughter. Fun, not scared, book.

Love this book! Read it a few times after having read Mans Search for Meaning many times. It is life changing stuff - and Fabry successfully helps to make some of the good Doctor's ideas more accessible.

Very clear.

Excellent!

Who are we called to be and what are we called to do so that our unique and universal "responsibleness" to what our context asks of us, evokes ever new meaning?Mercifully, we will never have another holocaust. Yet, in truth, the face of human decimation, the fear of another's heritage and belief, the dilemmas of what force can put down illegitimate power without surrendering what we determine to give power to, remain.Fabry's penetrating insight into a work (Frankl's) that is situated in history, is that history impels us to perennially re-examine all the dimensions of what has heretofore held meaning. It is our nature to seek our unique and collective place in this universal evolution."Most people want to be free, unique, and self-reliant; but most of all they want to be useful, to know for whom or for what they live, work, suffer, and die." (p. xix)Signs of new meanings are visible: questioning what about mental health may well lie outside standard definition (and in our nature); interfaith dialogue that is willing to release singular attachment to who/what God is, what truth is; restraint in declaring military force even as such acknowledges this also bears unacceptable human cost. In recognizing these signs of deep shift in our time of becoming, there is gratitude for a man and his followers whose work, even after almost 70 years, touches and challenges us to stay awake.Even so, I sense Fabry leaves open for our and future generations continuing questions which are relevant to the depth of responsibleness we are called to now: - Are we seeded into the divine and have transcendent experience of this dimension of our nature, as Fabry suggests, or is the divine seeded into us such that we are naturally driven and called? Not to falsely dichotomize the breathing movement into being that Fabry explains, but conflicts over the nature of source and conscience continues to stoke strife and meaningless in our positioning with one another.Clearly the matter of free will and determinism is not a new matter; there remains the dilemma of whether there is an accountability to history that transcends our will to act toward it. Will history move us forward in spite of our fears, our responses? If divine nature is seeded already into our everyday human dimension, we may be less the driver of our search for meaning and more the vessel through which the meaning of our existence manifests. - As I put the book down, I had a second and similar thought: If the source of the spiritual voice is to be uniquely and universally explored (as I too believe), imbued into our nature, is the purpose of our search to transcend psychological attitudes and assumptions that interfere, or is the purpose to open up those ways of perceiving, to see the (innocent; naive) impulse toward truth-seeking therein? This has much to say about how we SEE and meet one another - whether a therapist sitting across from a client, a political enemy facing his perceived adversary, a lover making room for the other to know their ultimate source of attachment and meaning.Fabry would welcome these reflections and perhaps even clarify his own meanings. McLafferty has astutely brought the book to our attention so we can, once again, examine who we are and why we are here, in 2014.

Joseph B. FabryThe Pursuit of Meaning:Viktor Frankl, Logotherapy, and Life(Berkeley, CA: Institute of Logotherapy Press, 1987--3rd edition)(ISBN: 0-917867-04-1; paperback) 197 pages(Library of Congress call number: RC489.L6F33 1987) Joseph Fabry was a colleague and close friend of Viktor Frankl. This book does not attempt to add anything to what Frankl himself taught. But it presents Frankl's thought in a formatthat makes it easier for all readers to understand. Frankl wanted to put the meaning-seeking dimensionback into psychotherapy. All human persons seek meaning for their lives. And each person finds himself in a specific situation, which provides many possible meanings. We are free to choose what we will do with our lives. In many places in this book Fabry encourages the readerto take his or her freedom seriouslyand to create a unique meaningfor that person's place in the world and in life.Even tho other forms of psychology do not believe in personal freedom,Logotherapy definitely does. This book offers inspiration and encouragementfor us freely to create the new meanings of our lives. You will find other books along the same linesby searching the Internet for: "Authenticity Bibliography".Books on the quest for meaning will be found here on the Internet:"Meaning in Life Bibliography".James Leonard Park, existential philosopher

The PURSUIT OF MEANING is a great addition to Viktor Frankl's MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING. My only complaint about the book is that Joseph Fabry seldom shows his great sense of humor.April Fool, indeed, who barely escaped death in a Concentration Camp..A Favorite quote from Goethe:"Life is too serious to be taken seriously."I had the good fortune to have Joseph Fabry as a friend and church member in California.Joe was one of several dozen refugees who fled from Hitler and joined UU Churches in America. He found a job helping to build Liberty Ships in Richmond, California. Then was an editor for the University of California. With Max Knight he wrote humorous columns and books. He told their story in a book, ONE AND ONE MAKE THREE.Joe, with his friend, Viktor Frankl, founded the Institute of Logotheraphy.Too bad none of these refugees are given biographical postings either byTHE UU HISTORICAL SOCIETY or by THE HARVARD SQUARE LIBRARY.Joe Fabry was even forgotten by Beacon Press. When I wrote asking about the book of his they had published 30 years ago,They wrote back that they had no record of ever publishing a book by him.Tonight, I will drink a toast to Joe,Who loved Goethe, Humanity, Sex, and told of his childhood in Vienna whereA friend used to take him to play at "Uncle Sigmund's House."Thank you, Joseph Fabry, my favorite APRIL FOOL.
