Review

STARRED REVIEW, School Library Journal (May 2018)Gr 2-5-Lies taps into the powerful nature of love, loss, grief, and hope in his latest picture book. Evan, a fox, and his dog are best friends and in a series of acrylic, oil, and colored pencil vignettes, they are shown attending a fair, playing games, and, most important, working in Evan's meticulously groomed garden. These loving scenes are abruptly cut short by a large spread of white space with spare text stating: "But one day, the unthinkable happened." On the opposing page, white space surrounds a grieving Evan as he mourns the loss of his dog. In his grief, Evan destroys the garden that reminds him so much of his friend and weeds grow in its place. When a pumpkin vine sneaks into the garden, Evan allows it to take root and with it, hope returns. With lyrical figurative language, Evan transitions from being devastated by heartache to a being willing to step back into the world again. With his pumpkin, Evan rejoins his friends at the fair. Although it's not the same without his best friend, he enjoys himself again and even wins a prize for his pumpkin. His prize and the hope of all those who suffer love's loss is a chance to love again with a new puppy. While best suited for independent readers or shared moments during a loss, this poignant picture book provides an exquisite depiction of grief and hope. VERDICT A remarkable first selection for all libraries and a helpful guide for children and adults who are going through their own rough patches. --Rachel Zuffa, Racine Public Library, WI

From the Back Cover

Evan and his dog do everything together. They play and read and eat. But mostly you will find them tending to Evan’s extraordinary garden, where flowers and other good things flourish and reach for the sky.But friends don’t always stay forever, and when Evan loses his, he destroys the place that meant the most to them, and creates something to match his mood. Something ugly and twisted, sad and stubborn, ragged and rough—and he likes it that way. Until one day . . . New York Times–bestselling author Brian Lies has created a breathtakingly beautiful and luminescent book about loss and grief, love and hope, and the healing power of friendship, curiosity, and nature.

Brian Lies has proved his mastery of illustration and story yet again! The illustrations alone tell a powerful story of friendship, loss, anger, acceptance, and hope. With purposeful choices in color that express the moods of the story, each page has layers of information in the tiniest details. In addition, the extremely precise verbiage says just enough to understand the story, but does not over-tell. The reader can easily fill in any loss, though choosing a pet is very appropriate. This book could be used in classrooms and at home, and can be given to anyone of any age.

A sweet story of love, grief and starting anew. A lesson for adults, as well as children. The pictures are detailed, clever and poignant. I appreciate the message of allowing Evan the space to work through his feelings and not make any of them wrong, but just part a path on the way back to life.

Excellent book for children on grief and the cycle of grieving. As a psychotherapist, is use it in both individual and group therapy. Perfect for parents as well.

I read Rough Patch to my two grand nephews (they are cousins) today and they were enthralled. Both families are dog lovers and owners. The kids asked thoughtful questions after being read to and were pleased with the ending.A must read if you love the cycle of friendship between a family and a pet.

Simple. Heartfelt. A wonderful springboard for conversations about loss. LOVE the ending and the fact that it is wordless and filled with hope.

I had a hard time reading this through all the tears but it's one of the most beautiful and palpable, but ultimately hopeful books about grief I have ever read.

My grand nephew loved this beautifully illustrated book that depicts loss, grief, and renewal. Kids' lives aren't perfect and they know it.

After the sudden loss of my Mom this past year, this book was a great way to show my children that its okay to feel like you want to be alone, and angry sometimes, but that at some point, you'll go back to being more of yourself. Of course, the illustrations were gorgeous as well. We love Brian Lies!

Lots of valuable historical information, however there are too many inaccuracies to award it more stars. The information provided on Marie Laveau is composed of pure legend. The home she lived in was not awarded to her for winning a court case. It belonged to who grandmother who was a free slave and she purchased the land and built the home and outbuildings with the money she earned as a merchant. For a fascinating and factual account of her life based on much research check out Carolyn Morrow Long's book. The address listed as the haunted location in "The Octoroon Mistress" does not match that of the Bottom of the Cup Tea Room. Both locations are on 2 separate streets! The information provided about Charles and Laura Larendon in "The Devil Came to New Orleans" is not factual. With all of these flaws it is hard to trust the credibility of any of the information provided.

I bought this book directly from a shop in the French Quarter. I purchased it some time ago for my Kindle but the device was irrevocably damaged during a flood. That aside, I found this book an interesting mix of history and macabre. For anyone who has an interest in New Orleans dark side, this tome is a must read. The introduction (something I rarely read) provides a brief step into the history of the city. Afterwards, the author takes the reader on a journey through the haunting history the beginnings of the city to almost present day. Some of my favorite parts are:~ The LaLaurie Mansion: a supposed dinner party turns into a blazing scandal that revealed the dark truth about a notorious socialite.~ Marie Laveau: Celebrated Voodoo queen and keeper of secrets.~ The Sultan's Palace: a mysterious Royal and his entourage meet an equal strange end.~ Haunted Hotels and restaurants: one could be sharing desert with a long ago waiter or entertainersThis book is spine tingling and hard to put down. I often re-read parts to relive to fascination all over again. I Believe the author did fine jobs and I highly recommend this book before a trip to The Big Easy.

No real detail. Very little background or detail on the sites or history to backup any of the view undervalued stories. Very disappointing

Troy Taylor is always an interesting writer. He does a lot of research on his subject of area, and all the books I've read from him make history fascinating. I really enjoy all of his books, very informative.

Perfect if you're going for a visit. This book gets you ready.

Taylor is a master. I am an historian and feel that I know the history of New Orleans fairly well. Still,Taylor's history is fantastic. He weaves the "dark" history of the City into the ghostly and hemakes you never want to put the book down! It is strange that I thought I knew something about theCity, but Taylor opened new doors for me all along the way. And, after all was said and done I cameaway from the book with a hopeful, upbeat feeling about the City and her future!

Excellent read on some of the different homes in new orleans. While visiting the town I reference the book while walking around.

I have visited New Orleans several times and knowing some of the history, this makes me want to go back and understand it all better!
