I expected this book to be hard work. I didn't know I'd love it.I bought it because, now an adult, I realize I've let too many classics get by me while I've read comparative garbage just because it seemed more fun. I KNOW the difference between good and bad literature, but I've been lazy since college or even before.I wanted to start back at the beginning and re-train my mind to want better things. Maybe I'm finally feeling my mortality or something.So this morning in a fit of insomnia, I picked up this book. WOW. So much fun! Every single entry leaves you with something to think about. This is what good children's' literature should be. It reminds me of why I preferred the 19th century authors when I was a child: there's a certain kind of whimsy in the language that modern authors just don't have. If I recall, even Edith Nesbit's books that weren't actually about magic still had that magical quality that excited me, and it's the language, not the content, that really matters.I think that's the real secret when it comes to helping a child want to read. So much of what is written for beginning "reading levels" has laudable content but no style, and that's plain boring for a kid. I remember. Heck, it's even more boring for the adult helping them to read, so everybody winds up unhappy. When you think about Kipling's Just So Stories, most of the actual information in them is absurd. The words give you a new angle on old material, one in which the rules are all different; it leads you to wonder WHY you think a certain way about a certain thing, and to laugh at the conventions of life and language, and maybe also to notice that the real world is as absurd as the fictional one.Bloom is right too that exposure to good children's literature prepares the way for appreciating good adult's literature. Though I've forgotten a lot, I DID read much of this stuff as a child. And when I pick up an adult classic expecting, as I did with this, to find it dry, I'm usually surprised to find the same qualities in it.In some ways this book is best as a kind of portable library or reminder list. You're better off owning the complete works of most of these writers (not to mention many more: this is still a very limited collection) but this is a decent shorthand version. If it sends a child out looking for more poetry by the same author she loves from this book, or if it excites comparisons, even unconscious ones, with other authors and leads her to make aesthetic judgments, it's done the job it was intended for.

Bloom presents a very good survey of what used to be called "children's literature." Bloom makes a compelling argument in his introductory essay as to why this literature is for everybody. If you were exposed to these works as a child, you were indeed fortunate. In today's, umm...less than intrinsically motivated society, most of the works presented in this tome are remedial reading. Grab some tea, get comfy, and get to work.

Harold Bloom is not only a leading literary critic and analyst; he is also a reader almost beyond measure. He has read more than even an avid reader would find possible in a couple of lifetimes. This makes it very easy for us to find things of value to learn from his writing and thinking about literature. At least it does for me.Bloom has such passion and love for prose and poetry that it infects me and I find his bold pronouncements an invitation to question and my own conclusion and preconceptions. Of course, Bloom wouldn't expect you to agree with him simply because he said it. He would invite challenge and argument, but be prepared in your challenges!This is a collection of forty-one stories and eighty-three poems that Bloom particularly loves and considers wonderful foundational reading. As he says, he does not believe in children's literature and these pieces wouldn't be found in most contemporary public primary school readings. But the poems are mostly short enough that a younger reader could go over them enough times to begin possessing them by heart in your memory. This is not a process of rote memorization, but of taking a kind of ownership through bonding with the material.What a great body of material Prof. Bloom has given us here. We are using it as part of our literature course - Lightening Literature- and have really enjoyed everything we've read so far.The book is soft bound and divided by seasons. We are always looking for ways to get our kids to read more. Really this entire series of books is perfect. First, they know the characters from the movie, so they are interested, second the books is just the right length, not too short, nor too long to easly bore a young reader. The words are easily read, and the stories easily understood for kids, 4-6 I would think. Obviously there are exceptions, but for K and 1st graders, this is a hit. Usually you can ge them with the 4 for 3 promo.

The number series is great for kids' progression in learning to read. My son loves the story lines.

I am really thankful for this book. I ordered it last January, after getting over the flu for the second year in a row. My immune system seemed shot, and I knew I needed to make a serious change. I researched candida, then I researched books and I went with this one. It really spells everything out for you and gives good explanations. As with any change, the diet changes and supplements were overwhelming at first. So, just in case it is useful for anyone getting started, the suggested supplements that I went with were:(Chapter 7, 90 day program)1. Herbal Antifungal - I went with pau d'arco (Gaia tincture; Vitamin Shoppe or Nature's Way tablets when out) because of a ginger allergy, so I was limited. There are other options in the book.2. Repair-Vite (herbs and amino acids to repair intestinal tract) - I substituted with BioGenesis Intestinal Repair Complex (iherb.com), mentioned later in the book. (Now, almost a year later, I take Jarrow L-glutamine morning and night and some of the other ingredients in the repair formula)3. Vitamin C: I used Metagenics Ultra Potent-C 1000 tablets but I noticed some ingredients that I didn't like recently.4. I used Gaia Milk Thistle seed extract instead of the Gallblader or Liver abX5. Vitamin E: Jarrow familE. The recommended Country Life Chelated molybdenum really worked to eliminate naseau from this supplement.6. Digestive Enzymes: Couldn't find one that made a big difference for me. I've heard great things about Enzymedica Digest Gold from other people.7. Flaxseed: Bob's Red Mill as recommended8. Red Clover Tea: ordered in bulk from the Mountain Rose Herbs website as recommended. Very happy with it and I continue to order the Red Clover and other teas from them.9. Molybdenum : Country Life Chelated molybdenum: alleviates die-off systems. I thought this supplement was very good.So, that's what I used to get started as far as the supplements go and I went through them in this review in the hope that it might simplify things for someone else. When I first got started, the die-off symptoms were severe and definitely made me feel worse, but were very temporary - a week or less. As expected, I was very tired, achy, had severe carb cravings, and had a sore throat (and I'm sure more symptoms, this is what I remember from almost a year ago). Strangely, every time I ate for a while (at least a month), I would have a little bit of a sore throat. But, it was definitely worth it as my symptoms have improved greatly and my whole relationship with food has changed for the better. As for the noticeable improvements that I have experienced -- I get sick less and if I do get sick I get over it more quickly; less tired; my weight used to fluctuate, this isn't the case anymore and I am steady at an ideal weight; I don't get as bloated or exhausted as pms symptoms; sinus symptoms have improved, and many other improvements that I am not thinking of now.I had a lot of reservations going into this diet because I loved food, baking and eating out so much -- it was what I looked forward to the most. Now, I am not a slave to food like I used to be and my dietary preferences and habits have changed. (Just as an aside, I still bake using a lot of paleo recipes and ideas, minus the added sweetener, and I like it even more than I used to like conventional baking). Also, in case it is helpful, I found a lot of great candida diet friendly recipes from Paleo cookbooks - Against All Grain (see blog), Practical Paleo, the nom nom paleo blog, countless others, as well as from the conventional sites I always used.So, if you've gone through the trouble of reading my really long review, you're probably at the point where you are seriously considering taking the plunge, and probably NEED to take this plunge and follow this program. My advice, commit to it mentally and do it. You do have the will power - sugar (and wheat) are an addiction, we all experience it, the initial transition will not be easy but you can absolutely get through it and it really will be MUCH EASIER from then on out. Also, as I'm believe other reviewers have mentioned, its best to do this on your own. Also, you may encounter resistance from people close to you that have good intentions. Its threatening to people when you go against convention (conventional diet) -- labeling it as a "temporary detox" might make other people more comfortable with it and less judgmental. I will probably NOT be able to complete 90-day program from the start; I will have to take her option to slowly remove things from my diet. But her approach is balanced. She says to take ONE anti-fungal and lists several. I now take caprylic acid supplements and occasionally drink Pau d'Arco tea. In other words, she's not advancing a period of excess to see a quick response, but change over time and a plan for maintenance. A lot of what she recommends here is good nutrition. . . eat some types of grains but forego the ones that turn to sugar and are highly processed. But she explains why these recommendations apply to the growth of candida. What helped me the most were two things: her explanation of food combining is one of those. Having lost my gall bladder and now having to eat moderate to low fat foods, there was a risk for me of too many refined or starchy carbohydrates. She does not recommend removing carbohydrates completely, and sure, we all know that refined carbohydrates affect insulin levels; she explains why the good carbs are good. But I was about to pay $40 for a food-combining program, and now don't have to because she summed it up in one paragraph. She also says that your body asks for what it needs, and I am a firm believer in that. It also craves refined carbohydrates and sugars when your blood sugar surges low or high. I've learned to recognize a good craving from a bad one. She doesn't just say "eat this, don't eat that," but explains the mechanisms. I personally love legumes and beans, and never understood why the Atkins diet, which was successful for me when I had a gall bladder, limited beans, but she explains that even while legumes are high in protein, the carbohydrates in them are starches, and have the effect of refined carbohydrates. So now they are treats, once or twice a week. She also explains when and how often to eat fruit. So she just doesn't say what to leave out and what to leave in, but why, and her structure helps create moderation, so you don't feel deprived but you're not limited to just a handful of food groups. I now know I can eat brown rice, when in the past I thought that was off limits. The second thing that is helpful are the recipes. I tried one last night - spicy chicken and cabbage soup. It is a little bit more expensive for me when shopping to buy the things I need to make these recipes, but part of that was a re-stock of my cabinets; I eat at work and often plunk down $7 for a sandwich and chips and a cookie and a diet soda . . . most of which is feeding the candida. If I stop shelling out for fast food and spend my money on good food and prepare to take food with me to work, I'm sure the net effect on my budget will be the same. If you LIKE explanations for the consequences to your body of what you put into it, and WHY nutritionists recommend some foods and suggest eliminating or limiting others, this is your book.

This is the first O'Reilly book I have ever (since 1992 ever, I own shelves of them, and in my computer bookshop days sold thousands of them) found anything less than great and it was a bit of a shock, so much so that I am compelled to write (I think) my first ever Amazon review about it.Reading it (at least the first 46% of it, where I gave up) was like waking up back in the dot.com days with a hyperactive sales evangelist cornering me in a jammed elevator, making claim after hyperbolic claim (distributed artificial intelligence, world peace, godhood!) about Blockchain while doing very little to explain what it actually was. Actually on reflection some of the claims seem conflated with those of the Kurzweil Singularity stuff - yes sure Blockchain might be a part of that, but it doesn't help to include it in the book.I'm sorry, I know writing and editing books is very hard work, and the author's excitement about Blockchain is palpable if rather unfocused, but this one really feels like it was a padded-out dash to a deadline. Maybe it would have been better as a shorter essay.

I searched through Amazon.com for a book about blockchain and chose this one because it was published by O'Reilly, which for me was (no longer) synonym with well-written books containing clear technical information. What a disappointment! The book is a long rant full of speculative ideas, which reminded me of George Gilder's writings at the time of the infamous tech stocks bubble. Enthusiastic, almost delirious, the author endorses any crazy notion, seemingly oblivious to the fact that after all these years bitcoin can still do only seven (!) transactions per second at the cost of $15 million per day). My favorite example is the idiotic notion that a Guaranteed Basic Income (an idea that has no relation to blockchain) would create enhanced "cognitive focus". I normally do not write reviews for Amazon.com but I wrote this one because the book is a fraud and my image of O'Reilly has been irreversibly damaged. After reading the book I looked at the reviews and the very first one expressed views exactly like my own.

It's lightweight. Read the Princeton Bitcoin Book from Arvind Narayanan instead.

If you know anything about blockchain you already know more than this book. Extremely general descriptions of what might be possible with blockchain.

Book is ok. It gives you enough basic explanations so you can start reasoning by yourself, but there are too much fantasy assumptions on what the blockchain could do which personally did not interest me. If you're pragmatic and you're also easily bored with the "imagine if this and this and this was happening then life could be that and that and that" type of thinking , then you may want to pick another blockchain book.

I'm sorry, but save your money. Seriously, the first two chapters may be worthwhile, but after that the book completely degenerates and never at any point recovers. It becomes endlessly repetitive, seemingly forgetting it has only just three, four, maybe 10 sentences back written almost the exact same sentence. The effects of caffeine are everywhere: it just gushes orgasmic desire for the blockchain and everything imaginable in the universe it will eventually touch 'transform, effect, change every conceivable dimension of our economic, social, and political lives...'. Really, this is the main problem: its incredibly grating and irritating to read, becomes, really, the perfect representative of what wrong with these 'innovations' and the groups that produce them and why we should be wary. For that, its worth reading I guess, as a case-study in its own right.On the other hand there is the incredibly poor research that the book is based on. Posts in chatrooms and at the bottom of some blog count for the author as substance enough to expound on the great potentials already being worked out in the blockchain community. Fair enough, this kind of research will save you the time of browsing a few websites yourself; the problem, though, is that the author seems to make the subtle leap from the sometimes interesting content of these internet-comments to deducing broad academic significance of them and elaborating them in an academic language that seems to establish their significance as already accepted(Deleuze and Heidegger get mentioned a couple times, strangely). That, unfortunately is far from the truth and what you end-up with is an endlessly recurring confrontation with the naivete of the author and or their ignorance of what should count as real research on a topic and or their attempt to evangelize something in a revolutionary language in order to drum-up interest, all integrity put aside. And that's also the problem I see in this space generally: one 'white-paper' after another, another long 'logical analysis' of the security of a 'coin' decomposing into increasingly complex system of conditional 'proofs' relying on nothing more than basic natural language for their establishment. Too much of it is amateurs simulating professionalism or ignorance masquerading as intelligence..Anyway, apologies for my rant. I think this stuff is interesting, the blockchain, etc. But this book doesn't amount to much more than a collection of notes that would probably, if properly edited, fit on a single sheet of paper front and maybe back.

I expected to get some technical book, but it's a "very high level" journalism.I think it's not a problem of the book, but of the scarcity of information on amazon (buy at first, then you will see what you have paid for).It may be useful for non-technical people.

A decent overview if you are new to the technology. I would rate higher but it feels like it is trying to enumerate everything about blockchain usage but not at any depth. While normally a field study is good, I feel it just need real depth. The lack of depth in my opinion is partly due to the fact we are still figuring out how to use blockchain tech. It is hot, and there are lots of proof of concepts, but in my experience, not real production worthy implementations. I do look forward to a new edition where we finally start to see what really worked (aka more than 6 month long projects between pre-established relationships and not just Bitcoin).

This is a very short book but with very good insights into the evolution of: the Cable industry, the sports TV and broadcasting and of course ESPN central role in all this.If you are interested in startups, entrepreneurship and keeping up afloat of new disruptive technologies, then this book can give you some idea of why sometimes they lose money or don't have earnings despite their high revenues and great future prospects. This quote form the book comes to mind:“Gentlemen, I would like to equate ESPN with an oil well,” he would say. “Seismic indicated there was a reservoir, and we determined that was true. Experience has shown that the reservoir is there and is a hell of a lot bigger than we originally thought. Unfortunately, it is also deeper than we thought. So I need more pipe.”It is also a book about creating, managing and maintaining a brand.

At first you might be forgiven for thinking that this book is a little too specialised, targeting a niche of a niche as it were, yet strangely the tale of the creation and expansion of an American sports television channel is rather fascinating, managing to serve several audiences at the same time.Unless you are particularly interested in sports programming or the broadcast television industry, ESPN might not mean so much to you; especially the further you are away from the United States. Yet this company has grown and probably exceeded the wildest dreams of its founders and there is a good chance that you could have seen some ESPN output and didn’t know it.If you are focussed on the broadcast industry you have one great story, if you are more interested in business start-ups and development here is another. If you are a generalist there’s a good story to tell, and the professional or academic can take other things out of this for their own particular needs. Dependent on your interest, you may skip a few pages here and there, yet overall you still are given an interesting, credible and powerful read.Whilst the trials and tribulations of “the early days” are satisfactorily covered, the book particularly focuses on the post-1998 activities of the company as it branched out to become a multi-country, multi-platform and multi-output behemoth. Some attempts at diversification failed; yet you can still learn from the mistakes of others. Rather a lot has worked though!Some of the anecdotes placed in the book really made it shine, even if it was not the intention. Something simple as this quotation of an event straight after the channel’s launch in 1979: “…the Washington Post’s Jane Leavy asked the new outlet’s president, Chet Simmons, how he thought the public would respond to an all-sports cable TV network. ‘I guess we’ll have to have a battery of divorce lawyers standing by to handle all the cases,’ Simmons quipped. ‘Did you ever think that a television network would be named as a co-respondent in a divorce action?’ Three years later, a woman in Austin, Texas, actually did name ESPN in her divorce suit. She claimed it ruined her marriage by offering her apparently addicted husband too much sports coverage.”Simple; and still new to this reviewer who spent nearly a decade covering the European satellite and cable television industry. Or harmless, such as this quoted factoid: “On January 26, 2000, Alisha and Chad Blondeel of Newaygo, Michigan, named their newborn son Espen — a tribute to Chad’s favorite TV channel.” (In 2004 as part of the channel’s 25th anniversary, they had a report featuring eleven children who had been celled Espen or Espn, all since the channel’s launch.)For those who care about such things, this book also features a comprehensive index and very extensive bibliography for further reading and source checking.This was a surprising find; the book appears to be a lot more attractive and desirable than one originally expected. It was an enjoyable read, even to somebody who cannot abide televised sports. Look past the sport towards the organisation and here, for this reviewer, was the best story.

I'm far from a sports fanatic, but on the other hand, I've got a long history of mostly non hands-on participation that dates back to the 1950s, when I loved to watch the Gillette-sponsored Friday night boxing matches with my dad - on our black-and-white TV set (complete with rabbit ears, no less). Later, I was a die-hard viewer of ABC's "Wide world of Sports" that launched in 1961, and I waited impatiently for the every-four-year coverage of my beloved Olympic games. My heart was in my throat as my hero, Jean-Claude Killy, schussed his way to wins in all three Alpine events in the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France. And who could forget late sportscaster Jim McKay's emotional, "They're all gone" as he reported on the Munich massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics?Except for the Olympics, which now come at us every two years (and with far less impressive TV coverage, IMHO), those other programs have long since come and gone. But on Sept. 7, 1979, another sports phenomenon emerged: ESPN (the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network). It hit the ground running, and - although I learned from this book that it didn't turn a profit until 1985 - it's pretty safe to say it's become a household acronym. In 2014, as the author points out, ESPN was named the "world's most valuable media property."Today, I'd bet the farm that not a day goes by that my husband and I - separately or together - tune in to some kind of ESPN show. Virtually every weeknight, you'll find our set tuned to one of my favorite shows, "Pardon the Interruption," to watch the sparring between hosts Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon.So it was that when I was granted the opportunity to read and review this by the publisher (via NetGalley), I jumped at the chance. Let me be perfectly clear, though: This is a scholarly publication. If you're expecting witty quotes from famous athletes or network executives or smack-on-the-butt locker room jokes, you'll be disappointed. Rather, it's a straightforward and exceptionally well-researched documentation of how ESPN and all its offshoots - from the magazine to books to made-for-TV movies and docudramas - came to be.Initially, it was to a degree a matter of right place, right time, given more public interest in sports, the emergence of cable TV and increasing deregulation of the communications industry. But transforming that beginning into the media powerhouse as we know it certainly didn't happen by accident; the author details almost every step of the route to success, such as the launch of "SportsCentury," a concept headed by Mark Shapiro that helped bring much-needed credibility to the network.The well-written book reads almost like a doctoral dissertation - albeit a much more interesting one than the few I helped edit back in my days as a university administrator - complete with extensive references at the end (close to 25% of the book is comprised of footnote and other resources, most arranged by chapter). In short, it's exactly what I would expect from a university press. That said, there's no way I can condense all the information that's in here; but I will say that if there was a stone left untouched, I'm confident it isn't an important one.
