Sarah Simblet teaches at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, University of Oxford, and at the Royal College of Art in London.  This book is published by DK is an encompassing look at sketching. It's not an instructional book although you can get lots of ideas from looking at the classic and contemporary drawings included. Some of the sketches are from artist Sarah Simblet, and others from a myriad of artists.There isn't much covered on the techniques. While there are topics like composition, light and shadow or perspective, they are mainly to introduce such concepts to beginners.The book is heavy on subjects. The main chapters are on animals, botany, architecture, still life, body, portraits, costumes, imagination and many more.It's a general guide to sketching and understanding the different sides to it. It's a bit too general for me though. For drawing books, I prefer those that are dedicated to specific subjects.It's an interesting book to flip through, and isn't too expensive.The US version of this book is "Sketch Book for the Artist". There's another edition with British English called "The Drawing Book".(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

If you can have only one book on drawing, make it this one. By drawing I mean basic skills. IF you study this book, I mean really make a study of this book, you will after about six months, emerge with serious drawing/drafting chops that you can take anywhere from there. Spend one month on each chapter, reading and doing and re-doing everything she suggests and copying everything else. Do this a few hours per day, starting with a warm up of previous work and cool down of the same to keep those skills up, and you will find all that comes after is easy. In addition, your fundamentals will be sound and you will have the confidence to draw anything. This won't make you a "pro", but will set you on the track to that, limited only by your natural ability. By this I mean that all things considered, some people can just do somethings better but only initially. Eventually everyone hits the wall, even the most talented, it's just that they hit the wall first. And this is where work evens the playing field, because effort beats talent over time BUT ONLY IF talent doesn't practice. The good news is, the talented rarely practice as much, they are used to getting things easily, so they yield to resistance. This is great news for the rest of us, who can just push along until we have 'pro' level skill (called MASTERY), at which point talent maters less than courage and spirit -- that is the desire to really use the acquired ability to say something worthwhile. Talent is just a head start. BUT this book will help you maximize the tools you need to neutralize the talent advantage of others and maximize your efforts. Great book by a great artist.

I read a review or two on here that said this book was a glorified sketchbook of the author. I find that unfair. There are sketches and drawings that the author did, but you have to acually read the book, not just look at the pictures. Sarah breaks the book up into chapters, with each chapter giving you a bit of art history, introducing you to a few artists, introducing you to a material, and giving you a lesson or two to try yourself. Each chapter builds on the next.What I love most about it is that she really encourages you to use your imagination. She gives you tools, building blocks, but she wants you to then use those tools to create your own vision. I highly recommend this book to those just starting out, and to the seasoned artist that maybe needs a fresh approach.

Based on the description I thought it would give you actual drawing lessons, but it's more of an overview of different techniques. There's very few actual sketching lessons in it and a lot of discussions of what artists did in different art pieces. It's still a very good book. It's just more of a exploration of different pieces of art.

I have owned this book for 3 years, bought from Amazon. I have found it to be one of the best and most inspiring books on sketching to come along. Not only is it crammed full of well-reproduced works by masters with detailed descriptions of the steps each artist took, but Ms. Simblet is thorough and yet most instructive in the "how" of each technique. She encourages the use of imagination via her own wonderful drawings; shows shortcuts to "seeing" such things as "negative" space and spherical shapes, perspective, etc. and covers the full range of artists including many contemporaries I had never heard of (many are English artists). Her writing style is that of an experienced teacher who knows how to communicate! SHe also covers the gamut of materials for the artist, going beyond the traditional pencil, charcoal, and pen & ink.

I own just about every drawing book and have learned a little from each one. What makes this one stand out is the beautiful artwork in it. I found it inspiring. Instead of looking at the pictures wishing I could do something like that, I took my supplies out and actually tried them. Of course they turned out almost as good as the pictures in the book....NOT! But the point is that this book was a good motivator to give it a go and learn so that the next one will be better. IF you're looking for a beginners how to book, I would suggest you pass on this one for now only because I think it's a book you will appreciate more once you have been drawing for a while. It's a great book for inspiration and I think if you team this with Danny Gregory's "Illustrated Life" you will find endless inspiration and ideas to get you going.

Checked this book out from the Library but was so impressed I had to buy it. Got it for a fantastic price and have used it often since receiving it. You won't be disappointed if you need better ideas about drawing and lots of pictures for examples. Would help any artist, from beginner to intermediate.

Tl;dr: A great read for older elementary and up. Factual and fun. Read it.Nathan Hale’s 6th book, and it doesn’t disappoint. Once again, he takes a familiar backdrop and fills it with little-known (to most) and interesting details which are equal parts entertainment and education.The historical Nathan Hale is back with his executioner and British officer to tell another tale. This time, Vicente Guerrero (and his band of executioners) join to help tell the story which, after all, mostly takes place in Mexico. This is a great touch and really helps propel the story while providing even more entertainment.This book includes a relatively thorough (but not tedious) history of Texas before its statehood in 1845. I enjoyed feeling the sense of chaos inflicted by the politics of time. The story follows the “Alamo All-Stars” to tell the story: William Travis, Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, and (not familiar to me) Juan Seguin. Actually, a lot of time is spent on Bowie and his many exploits which led to him being in the thick of Texas’s violent birth.My largest gripe is with Santa Anna, who left no defenders of the Alamo alive. Thus, no reliable accounts of the defenders immediately before or during the battle. However, Nathan Hale did his best with what he had.Also, once again, the maps and diagrams included inside the front and back covers are helpful to place the wide range of featured locations.Full disclosure: I’m a history teacher, and I am painfully aware of how little most Americans know about their neighbors. Hopefully, this book will help fill in the blanks many have about our southern neighbor.

As a teacher, I am very happy to have these books in my classroom and school library. They are fun, informative and fascinating for young readers. Nathan Hale serves up history just the way kids like it, with humor, facts and interesting sidebars that all make the kids want to read more, more, more! Once they start reading a Hazardous Tales story, they always want to read the whole series.I got my copy of the Alamo All*Stars from Amazon yesterday and brought it to school today. Three kids have read it by lunch and I have a waiting list of ten right now -- and that's just my 5th grade homeroom.All that said, Alamo All*Stars is a great tale, especially for Texas students. The maps are very helpful, the drawings of the Alamo spot-on accurate, and the back story and end result of the Texas Revolution are all included, giving great context. Hale gets the tone just right, without vilifying one side or creating hagiographies of the other. You just can't ask for more.

My 8yo son has read each of the NHHT books multiple times. He keeps one with him wherever he goes. They can have themes that may be shocking for some, but those opened good discussions for our family. For example, _The Underground Abductor_ exposes some atrocities of slavery that I wasn't aware of. Our kid asked questions, and we talked them out.If you have a kid who loves learning and humor and you can handle having discussions about hard stuff occasionally, then I highly recommend these books.We have loaned a couple to friends who don't love reading for pleasure, and they also LOVED these books.

This book is probably more suited for 8-12 y/o than my children but even my 3,4 and 6 year old love hearing the stories. I think the interesting comic book format with the good illustration keeps their attention. As a parent I find this very refreshing to be able to teach my kids some history they probably aren't going to be taught in school, I know I was taught much about the Alamo.Do yourself a favor and buy all of the Nathan Hales books.

I hated history and never understood it in class growing up. Now I find it interesting and can understand it, mostly thanks to these books. My 7 year old has ADHD and struggles with reading. He loves history and loves looking at and trying to read these books. He has learned so much about history. These books are beautifully and sturdily designed. My son wants to collect them all and I am happy to help him achieve this goal.

This should be required reading for kids learning Texas history (and really anyone visiting the Alamo). It is fun, engaging, easy to read, and makes the history come alive. His illustrations are so fun to look at. I love Nathan Hale's books and I can't wait to read more. If he ever runs out of ideas, I think he should go back to ancient history. I would love to see him tackle Attila the Hun or Genghis Khan or Alexander the Great!

We discovered these books when my son was 7. Nathan Hale's books have been a spring board into his interest in history. These are engaging, funny, and informative. I can't thank the author enough. We have all of his books and my son reads them repeatedly.

All of the Hazardous Tales books have been wonderful. I teach struggling readers in junior high and they all love these books. Over the school year, most of my students will read the whole series. They are also perfect for ELLs who are gaining background knowledge. This book was no exception. My students were excited to learn about something they had never heard of. I always have a checkout list for these books.

This is an excellent reference book. covering some specialized aspects of Word 2013 that are not covered in other books. It's too bad that there is no such thing as a "complete bible" for this complex subject. The only solution is to buy more books.

There are too many important features of Word 2013 - if one is into publishing eBooks - not to purchase this bible on Word 2013. The hyperlinks features assist greatly if multiple contents pages are created (such as having 3 or more chapters in one eBook) not to have this aid. The current project is a series of eBooks with multiple chapters, and hyperlinks are critical. If you are into publishing eBooks, this is a must.

This may be a good book if you buy the printed version. However, I was stunned to find that, in the Kindle version, the index did not provide links to relevant sections and did not even provide page numbers for indexed items!!! The only link into the document through the table of content is at the chapter level, which is very generic (eg "Improving Document Content and Consistency.") Subsections within a chapter are not listed in the TOC. All of this makes searching for a specific topic very frustrating.I would not recommend buying the Kindle version

This has been a great reference manual. I can always find ways to accomplish tasks as efficiently as Word is capable of doing them with these instructions. (Still don't think Word is as efficient as WordPerfect when it comes to word processing programs.)

I purchase the Bible each time I upgrade my Microsoft Office. It has useful information and I've always been able to find what I needed.

One of the best books on Word I've read and I've read several. Very thorough. I would give 6 stars if I could.

This seems to be a great reference. However, I bought it to figure out a specific problem, and the problem doesn't seem to be explained at all.

Does not come close to helping you get through problems in Word 2013

The book title doesn't lie. Simple and concise, easy read, no frills and honest. It also coincides with everything I've been discovering about Medicare. Wish this book was available a few years ago when I first started my research, it would have saved many hours of confusion.

What a GREAT book!! 49 pages with examples of plans and dollar estimates in an easy to read booklet that anyone can understand. Takes about an hour to read and makes Medicare simple! I would HIGHLY RECCOMMEND this booklet to anyone now on Medicare,(as I am), or about to enter the program. It will save you time, frustration, and possibly a lot of money.

I bought this book on a whim for my mother-in-law who goes on Medicare soon. I thought it would be a cute/funny gag gift.When I gave it to her she read the Table of Contents right away and said, "OMG, this is the real deal!"It turns out I accidentally gave her something very helpful.
