I purchased this travel book specifically because it had a 2011 date, however, this book has clearly not been updated in years. The hotel where I stayed (Villa la Estancia) opened around 2005 and was not listed in this book. Many of the shops and restaurants listed were closed. The book itself was fine if it had been up to date. Having the 2011 copyright date is a complete misrepresentation and the publisher should clearly state that although the book may have been printed in 2011, it has not been updated since.....2005 or 2006.

Had no issues with this guide except that our hotel was not listed. We stayed at a sister hotel to one of the "big chains" (Playa los Arcos) - we got all of the amenities while only being 1 block further from the beach (read: one block total) and saved a bundle (Casa Dona Susana, if you're wondering - gorgeous and very "local" feeling). In any case, we found good restaurants from this guide and also good entertainment. Gave our guide to friends who are traveling there soon.

Huge space devoted to restaurants. It did not go into much detail on some of the places I would like though (the Botanical Gardens) and the Zoo was not mentioned at all. Very good resource for planning a trip there (possibly the best).

This is a good concise guide to Puerto Vallarta. Would have liked a more expanded section on accomadations and dining. Found most of their comments to be spot on. We found supplemental information through Trip Advisor and Chowhound websites.

I was very glad I had this book for my recent trip to Puerto Vallarta. The "Fodor's Choices" for restaurants were particularly helpful. With Fodor's help we had good food that didn't break the bank, and we saw the key sights of Puerto Vallarta. In the future, I won't travel without Fodor's.

The guide was very handy in finding good restaurants after we had our fill of the all inclusive meals at our hotel. Went with Fodors choices and was not dissapointed at all , and the maps made them a snap to find. We are going back next Feb and will bring the book to explore more beaches we didn't have time for this year. Enjoy, Steve

I ordered this book thinking it was the latest publication .... as the price would indicate that. It was 4 years behind and when traveling in P.V... three of the places this book suggested were no longer in operation. Very frustrating.

A great overview of the sites in Puerto Vallarta. This book was extrememly helpful during our visit.

As an "80's baby" who grew up on Super Mario on the old Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), this book was so nostalgic for me. I remember using the old controller and playing until my thumbs hurt, fighting against Bowser and all the other monsters in the game. I know this book isn't really for adults, but I loved it! I thought it was really creative and unique, and I understood all of the jokes in ways that no child of today, or even of 10-15 years ago would, and can't wait to break out some of those jokes to my other gamer friends in my age demographic. Back before technology was so great that you felt like you were "inside" the game... there was Super Mario... the original one... where you had to blow into the cartridge to get the game to play. Ahhh.... the good ole days!

I did like the lil parts with the cartoons I rated it a four. It was a great book. THATS FOR MAKING IT!!!😀😀😀

Coming from a self-taught background and having played keyboard/synth in rock bands for the past 10 years, I thought I would revisit the study of 'piano' properly and with due diligence. There were obvious gaps in my theory and my technique had disintegrated over the years, so when researching a methodology for approaching the piano I came across Mark Levine's 'Jazz Theory' and found the Holy Grail. At the time I even contemplated ironing out my 'education' by enrolling in a Bachelor of Music, however when I saw the content of this book and the robust approach it takes I knew that my plan was to devour this book; study it, apply it, absorb it, but above all, practice, practice, practice. This book is virtually a Music degree in itself. With the advent of Youtube, I can check out each jazz standard example given, played by a multitude of brilliant musicians; this also helps with technique as I can watch the pianists hands/fingers to see what they’re up to. Overall, the deal is this, and I'm applying this to myself at the moment and have done for the last 12 months; if you follow this book, page by page, review periodically, practise your butt off (3 hrs daily minimum) transpose everything into every key, and basically, suck this book like a sponge, you'll be as good as any decent jazz piano major from any music college. Don't believe me? Prove it to yourself by doing the following:1. Get this book2. Study it3. Practise the examples in all keysYou'll then be able to see what the difference is in 12 months’ time; your jazz knowledge and technique will exponentiate and it will blow your socks off, including your fellow musicians in your band/trio/ensemble and you’ll be a well-rounded musician.

After buying many many of them, humbly for me, if i had to choose just a few books on Jazz Theory, i would choose these:Bert Ligon - JAZZ THEORY RESOURCES, VOL. 1 & TWO (Really complete)Mark Levine - The Jazz Theory Book (Really good but not as complete as my first choice)Bert Ligon - Connecting Chords with Linear Harmony (new way to think...)Bert Ligon - COMPREHENSIVE TECHNIQUE for JAZZ MUSICIANS (Really good for practice)Hope it will spare some time to people:)

It is the definitive text - but in the Kindle version all of the illustrations are difficult read read and are cut off weirdly.

I think the only thing that could make this book any better is if it came with CDs of all the musical examples. I have only ready the first two chapters and a lot of things have become clearer for me. I would not say this book is very the absolute novice, but if you have some theory and knowledge of your instrument as an intermediate player you will gain a lot from working through this book. It would help to be able to read both treble and bass clef (such as a piano player does) but it is not an absolute must. I am a guitarist and theory is theory. A great book to buy, it does not disappoint and it will not leave you scratching your head and tossing it to the side out of frustration.

My significant other is an excellent classical pianist and has wanted to learn jazz piano for a long time. I talked to several professional jazz musicians and all of them referred me to this book. I am so glad I took their advice. She has spent many evenings a week learning the various scales and chords, why the music differs from others, how it differs from others, how notes are played differently, and even how to create her own chords based on provided notes. She loves this book and I love that she loves it. Highly recommended!

Fantastic book. Answered a lot of questions I had. It is better laid out in terms of sequence than the jazz piano book. The sequence oh this book introduces things more smoothly and in an integrated fashion. There is a lot of the same material as the jazz piano book but there is data in the jazz piano book which is not on thus one (more specific to pianists - like data on chord voicings) and there is data in this one on improvisation, repertoire and practise routines they is not in the piano book. When I went through this one several points about scales and modes I had misunderstood finally clicked.The great thing about these books is they don't oversell some "method" of "learning jazz quick" and they also do not over complicate things. The basic information is all there and after that it is just up to you to practice and explore and learn for yourself. Don't expect to read it cover to cover and be able to play jazz. It will be a matter of taking these principles and working on them in practice day after day. But I would say this is one of the best launching pads to take off from in terms of encompassing all the basics of Jazz.For the pianist, I would just buy both of his books and go through them in parallel or go through the chapters on scales and modes from this book first.

I have read other books on improvising, sometimes leaving me more confused in the process. Levine's explanation - while sometimes making my head hurt - ultimately makes sense, and helped me make sense of the other materials I have been reading. This book is well worth the read.

The best jazz music theory book out there. Do you want to understand jazz harmony and theory and improve your playing. This covers everything ! ..and better yet explains it all so it makes sense. Take it slow..a page or two a day is plenty. Having a piano to visualize and play the examples is even better ( or any kind of keyboard). I play jazz guitar and this book is amazing.

Interesting bio on A. G. Gaston, a great African-American who promoted economic self-sufficiency and possessed a passionate entrepreneurial spirit. The book is well-written and chronicles Gaston's life early as a child born in Alabama at a time when "lynching" of blacks in America was at its peak, and continues through into adulthood, focusing on his business ventures, marriages and family life, all the while including historical facts of black America during the 1900's. One of the writers is A. G. Gaston's niece, noted author Carol Jenkins, which allows for personal insight into his family life that otherwise may not have been available to the reader. For example, information about his second wife, Minnie Gaston's personal success and her contribution to the black community was especially insightful. Including the realization of Gaston's reluctance to be financially supportive of Minnie's entrepreneurial endeavors.The book depicts "the making of a millionaire: A. G. Gaston," by delving deep into Gaston's everyday life - his struggles, missteps, and success as a [black] businessman. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book about Gaston who, against all odds, becomes successful in his community, which highlights his accomplishments, but also how he empowered others within the community as well.Favorite quote of book: "What I did any man can do - if he has willpower, determination and a plan." I loved to reading the story of the very enterprising A. G. Gaston.His story reminds me much of what I heard about John Rockefeller. Building a vertical empire, each new business supporting the ones that came before them. Each new business supporting a public need.This is a great read for people who would like to learn success principles, study black history or just like great biographies.

Inspiring! A must read! A grandson of slaves, a pioneer, a heroic figure, an entrepreneur, a boss, a maverick, and a person who straight up did big things and helped so many people on the way. First of all I'm from Demopolis, Al, and knew of A,G. Gaston, the story was excellent and I learned more about my hometown in this book than 68 years of living and visiting there often, It was very inspiring to learn that he was a multi-millionaire and came from very humble beginnings. He did a lot for our race and I wish that there were more of us like him today. He mentioned Wyatt T. Walker whom I've met as I now live in Petersburg, VA. Wonderful book and lot of history on how blacks were treated and still is as some whites have a problem showing respect for our black accomplished President, it reminded me of the Tuskegee Airman, so I put him in that category. Having lived in the era and growing in the South I can identify with this book. Well researched!!

An Amazing historical read on A. G. Gastonia!! He was ahead of HIS TIME in understanding the economic concept of Finding a Need and Serving IT!! Also His Part in the Civil Rights Movement! Purpose Driven and Mission Drive!

By far one of the BEST books that I have read in the past year. The reader has an opportunity to understand what it means to suffer the indignities dished out during the tumultuous days of the Jim Crow south in Alabama, what resilience really means and despite ups and downs, learn what self determination is all about.

A must read for all young people. Arthur was an exceptional person and Liz and Carol weave a beautiful page turner!

The story of A.G. Gaston is simply incredible. I purchased the book because I love to read storiesabout people who have overcome impossible odds to become successful business people.But I am also a 20th century history buff and therefore, thisbook was an exceptional treat. About halfway through, I wasfantasizing about a Ken Burns documentary called, The Life And Times Of A.G. Gaston.One quick sidebar; Check out the story ofMadame C.J. Walker, a Black woman born shortly after the Civilwar, to former slaves. She became a multi-millionaire and diedat age 52 at about the same time Mr. Gaston was returning fromWWI. She was the first self made Black female millionaire andher story is also amazing.A.G. Gaston was clearly from the Booker T. Washington school ofeconomics. He survived and thrived in an area that was arguably ground zero of theinsanely racist south, and arguably ground zero of the civil rights movement.I refer to the area roughly bounded by Montgomery and Birmingham Alabama, and Meridian Mississippi.It would have been easier for a Black man to become a multi-millionaire in almost any other area of the country.I would highly recommend this book as required reading in American high schools.
