In Masonic Temples, William D. Moore introduces readers to the structures American Freemasons erected over the sixty-year period from 1870 to 1930, when these temples became a ubiquitous feature of the American landscape. As representations of King Solomon’s temple in ancient Jerusalem erected in almost every American town and city, Masonic temples provided specially designed spaces for the enactment of this influential fraternity’s secret rituals. Using New York State as a case study, Moore not only analyzes the design and construction of Masonic structures and provides their historical context, but he also links the temples to American concepts of masculinity during this period of profound economic and social transformation. By examining edifices previously overlooked by architectural and social historians, Moore decodes the design and social function of Masonic architecture and offers compelling new insights into the construction of American masculinity. Four distinct sets of Masonic ritual spaces—the Masonic lodge room, the armory and drill room of the Knights Templar, the Scottish Rite Cathedral, and the Shriners’ mosque – form the central focus of this volume. Moore argues that these spaces and their accompanying ceremonies communicated four alternative masculine archetypes to American Freemasons—the heroic artisan, the holy warrior, the adept or wise man, and the frivolous jester or fool. This is an excellent analysis of the culture of Freemasonry in New York State as expressed in architecture during the rise of Freemasonry following the Civil War to its decline during the Great Depression and following. For non-Masons such as myself, this is surprisingly lucid and comprehensive. The various branches of Freemasonry are discussed in a general pattern of relative size and development beginning with the York Rite. The only slight criticism I have is that the author limited himself (with all good reasons) to New York State only. However, it appears that New York State most likely is representative of developments throughout the United States. This is truly an excellent book.

This is such a good book! What a tremendously complicated thing to well -situate, so to speak, the golden age of the Masonic building boom in terms that lead the reader to further insight and seriousness about Masonry itself. Instead of into platitudes, or their opposite. I notice that Mark Tabbert mentions Clawson's book in his review here, I assume referring to her Constructing Brotherhood, in praising this one. Actually, I think comparing them is very useful for pointing out the special character of Moore's . Clawson's is a good book in some ways, but its rather blunt and dated-sounding social analysis (almost Marxist in tone) , is nothing like the the purposeful subtlety of this one. What is wonderful about this one is that he conveys Masonic philosophy without rigid academic reflexes, but with academic rigor. And I can vouch for that particularly because this book was useful to me fairly recently in writing an academic paper on Masonry on a topic not specific to Temples per se. Thus, a very useful book, all the way around.

Masonic temples with external and internal features to evoke King Solomon's temple in ancient Jerusalem built throughout New York state from 1870 to 1930 were intended to "anchor [Freemasons] within a cognitive framework as they faced the existential crisis of being American men" in this period of profound, challenging, and often perplexing cultural change. New York state serves as an instructive example of the architecture of Masonic temples throughout the United States and the types of rituals and other activities they were built for because of this state's diversity embracing urban, suburban, and rural areas. The author is also familiar with New York Freemasonry from his one-time position as director of the Chancellor Robert R. Livingston Masonic Library in New York City, though he is not himself a Mason. This Masonic Library also contains an incomparable amount of Masonic literature for study. The main chambers of a Masonic lodge are built and furnished to define--and thus to anchor--different facets of masculinity as these are recognized by the different stages of Freemasonry's initiations and rituals. The four principle chambers known as the Masonic lodge room, armory and drill room of the Knights Templar, the Scottish Rite Cathedral, and the Shriners' mosque correspond respectively to the masculine facets of the heroic artisan, the holy warrior, the wise man, and the jester. Moore moves back and forth from physical aspects of these rooms, the relationship of these aspects to the different facets of masculinity, and how Masonic rituals, lore, values, and practices work to define these aspects and keep them in proper balance in the formation of the ideal Freemason.

I had been very anxious to read this and finally got a hold of it through the library (I just have TOO many books), and read this fairly quickly as I found it to be very, very interesting.Lots of nice photos, very good recap of Blue Lodge Masonry and other concordant bodies, also their history and how they related to the membership at the particular time of the organizations heydays.I got a better perspective of how Masonry related to America at that period of time and see where it needs to go today to remain functional and with purpose in our day and age. I think it will.

Prof. Moore has for many years been one of the best academic scholars of American Freemasonry. His reseach is now at long last in published form. I can not recommend this book high enough. He now offically joins such other great academic scholars as Bullock, Jacob, and Clawson. This is what Masonic history ought to be and how it should be written.

Sorin Drăghici holds the Robert J. Sokol MD Endowed Chair in Systems Biology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is a professor in the Department of Clinical and Translational Science and the Department of Computer Science, as well as the head of the Intelligent Systems and Bioinformatics Laboratory at Wayne State University. He is also the chief of the Bioinformatics and Data Analysis Section in the Perinatology Research Branch of the National Institute for Child Health and Development. A senior member of IEEE, Dr. Drăghici is an editor of IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology, and International Journal of Functional Informatics and Personalized Medicine. He earned a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of St. Andrews, UK.

This book is extremely rich yet readable. It covers a lot of different topics, and chapters can be read in order or referred to as needed.However, if you take the time to read it through carefully, you will enjoy yourself, because the author is a master of pedagogy, and often humorous.While expression microarrays are the platforms covered by this book, most of the material has much broader application beyond that. Cell biology, R, statistics, experiment design, molecular pathways, and machine learning are all covered. Even if you don't work with microarrays, there is something in this book for you, anyway you should know the basics of microarray analysis.Computer scientists or other non biologists may want to start at the beginning, which is an introduction to the cell and its basic mechanisms. It may seem like a lot of memorization and daunting to those who have never learned biology, but this chapter is well written with plenty of color images. It gives all of the fundamental biology needed to understand microarrays.The author knows which topics need to be covered in more depth than other authors are generally willing to do. I especially appreciated the section on degrees of freedom. If you never really had a grasp on this topic (but used it anyway) you will be grateful for section 8.4!Another chapter that I especially appreciated was "Experiment Design", which is so critical to any scientist of molecular biology and bioinformatics. How many of us in bioinformatics have been asked to analyze data from poorly designed experiments? Thanks to the extremely thorough preceding chapter on ANOVA, the chapter on experiment design is naturally set up for a straightforward and clear presentation of the rules, guidelines and concepts of experiment design. It presents the classic design models and several examples used by professionals in the field. The reader will feel confident designing basic experiments without having to refer the big hard core texts on the subject.Throughout the book, very essential snippets of R code are revealed. You won't need much more or less than what you see here, once you have a little R under your belt. Dr Draghici's specialty is pathway analysis, and he is the coauthor of the R package "SPIA", available on bioconductor. The pros and cons of the different pathway analysis methods are discussed in detail.

What a great book. The author is an excellent teacher who is skilled in transferring his in-depth knowledge to people unfamiliar with the material. The book is engaging and highly readable. In his short, but densely-packed chapter on GO-Terms, I learned more from him in a couple hours than I did from TAs in a 3-hour class augmented by many additional hours of my own independent searching on the web to "fill in the gaps". Fantastic book! Draghici highlights the gotchas and pitfalls researchers inadvertently run into and don't know it. I constantly read and re-read sections of his book which are relevant to corners of my current research where I wonder if there was something that I might have missed. It is amazing how many "golden nuggets" of non-obvious information packs into a readable and concise format. I feel like I have a second adviser in my Doctoral research.

Readers of all backgrounds will find much to be pleased about with this book. Whether you need to learn basic biology or just need a refresher, this book will serve you well. Starting with basic biology, Draghici moves on to illuminate the basic issues confronting both Affymetrix and cDNA microarrays. The section on basic R programming is simple enough for a non-computer scientist to understand and yet moves rapidly enough to satisfy experienced programmers who will appreciate the commentary which helps to dispel some of the initial "weirdness" of R. I used this section to brush up on my R after being away for a while. Next the book covers statistics in a way that I found to be very readable. Many books will teach you statistics, but what sets this book apart from others is the way that it helps the reader to develop intuition about the statistics without sacrificing rigor. Later chapters focus on a variety of topics including machine learning / gene ontology / pathway analysis etc.The color illustrations were an unexpected surprise in such a technical book and very useful in illuminating the material. In summary, this is a great book and a great price. You will want to keep it as a reference.

My Draghici know how to write for both the expert and the layman. I highly recommend any work produced by this professor.

This book is perfect for anyone who is trying to begin programming with R. I did have previous experience with C++ and python before purchasing this book, but my experience was minimal at best. The fact that I wish to apply R to some microarray work that I have on going made this the absolute perfect purchase! The concepts would however apply well to nearly any biological application of R, making it a good all around beginner guide regardless.

So much useful information in this book it unreal. Plus the author explains the concepts in a clear and concise way without too much filler.

Even I could follow it. This book connects the biology with the statistics with the R code using plain English and very helpful graphics. If you have a foundation in statistics and need a primer on genetic biology and the technology used to analyze genomic data, this book is wonderful.Chapters 6 and 7 are an intro to R and BioConductor,and Chapter 8 and 9 as mini-refresher courses on Statistics and Probability are a bonus.This will be a great reference even after the current micro-array technology is outmoded.

Studied this book over the course of 2 weeks and passed my CTS with a 441. If you are planning to sit for your CTS I would recommend this book. Read the book through and take notes. After you have read the book all the way through, study your notes. Then, try to answer the review questions at the end of each chapter. Re-read sections relative to any of these that you missed (take notes here as well) until you comprehend the answer. In most cases it will not help just to memorize answers to the review questions or the practice test questions. You have to understand the concept behind the answer. Next, take the practice test that is on the CD that comes with the book. Follow the same instructions for this also (re-read and take notes as needed). Next, take the Infocomm online practice test and do the same with those questions. Last review all your notes and go take the test. It helped me to re-write my notes in another notebook and put them in my own words while I reviewed them. Good luck and hope this helps.

This resource is only okay. It's pretty obvious that this book isn't a professional text book. It's extremely wordy and it doesn't present information in the simplest or most logical way. Information that's related is often not presented side by side making it difficult to keep track of what the book is trying to teach. This book is useful to learn what it is you need to learn about. I spend a good amount of my time with this book looking up clarifications on concepts online where they're often explained much better. Often times the book will introduce a "vocab word" in a paragraph without ever actually telling you what it is. The author randomly italicizes words of interest...usually this denotes a vocab word and indicates that it can be found in the glossary in the back. Many of these italicized "vocab words" don't appear anywhere in the glossary and some even lack definition at all in the text. In general, confusing or unusual terminology are used instead of simply, colloquial explanations. I would cautiously recommend this to others simply because of the lack of other comprehensive resources available, but be prepared to do a lot of independent research to understand some of the concepts in this book.

Absolutely needed if you want to pass the exam. The practice questions in the back of each of the chapters. The chapters are well laid out and then the supplemental material you will get when you register for the exam will really help you excel at this test.I studied for ~3 weeks went through all the chapters and used the online free module you will get when you sign up for InfoCommU. Definitely also a fantastic resource, but this book is definitely one of the needed study tools for the exam.

This book has way more information in it than the exam does. Not to say this is not necessarily a bad thing but if taking the exam is your primary goal, don't let this book confuse you, take the online test prep and online study tools (especially standards) closer to test time. I got my CTS about a month ago and I only finished about 60% of the book.

An amazing book. Has just the right amount of information, enough to feel complete without reaching into something inessential. If you're into anime you'll get a lot from it, and even if you aren't you might like it.A few of the cool things about this book:Extremely frank about the biases of it's first person sources. By showing what a lot of different people think about something, and why they might think this way, we get a deeper understanding of the subject.The book spends as much time on pre-Tezuka anime as post, covering a range of history that hasn't been covered in other books. It's really interesting to see the first animation studios pop up in Japan, and the chapter on anime during WWII is really really cool. It's a strange choice in some ways, as less was happening during this time than after, meaning that those chapters feel exhaustive while the post-Tezuka ones are distilled to the highlights. This is not a problem at all, as it makes trends and influences easy to track on an emotional level as you feel the passage of time.

Highly recommended.

A great read, can be quite hard to follow the narratives of certain personnel at times but overall an entertaining and informing read. It's expensive but its worth every cent.

It's more than just anime art--a good resource all-around on history and changes through the years. Recommended for all of those interested in the topic. It's probably best for teenagers and adults.

The type is really really REALLY small and there aren't many pictures, but anime loving brother seemed happy to receive it for Christmas.

Gave this to my son for one of his presents for Christmas 2016, he loved it. He's an animator.

I’m a customer of Robert Ramlal (Upland Car Pros, Houston, TX). I learned of this book from him because Walt was a customer of his for years too.I’m no stranger to self-rescue and doing my own auto repairs. I spent most of a decade off-roading (aka, 4x4’ing) in the Alaska wilderness where my friends and I would get stuck or break our trucks and have to fix them ourselves. After all that, I found this book contained a lot of good information that I did not previously know. It’s written is layman’s terms. There’s nothing too technical in his book and the repairs he describes don’t require specialized, expensive equipment. Walt says right in the book that this book is about temporary, emergency roadside repairs necessary to get you out of harm’s way, back on the road, and to your mechanic. Nearly all the advice and techniques he shares require almost NO mechanical aptitude at all. So even the most mechanically intimidated don’t need to be afraid of this book. These are things that YOU CAN DO!This book is a MUST HAVE for every motorist, needless to say it’s a must have for every prepper. I was pleasantly surprised by this book, and will be giving this book as a gift to friends and family. Easy reading, actionable advice, with very little mechanical ability required. There’s no reason not to get this book.There’s only 2 things I would add. First, having been in 2 car fires (once as driver and once in the passenger seat), I think a fire extinguisher is essential gear. Walt only mentions a fire extinguisher in passing in his list of extra non-essential equipment. While it’s highly UNLIKELY you’ll ever need one, when you do, it can mean the difference between a damaged, perhaps disabled and undriveable vehicle and...losing EVERYTHING in the car and the car itself!Second is a first-aid kit. Every vehicle should have one. Too easy to get cuts and burns repairing a vehicle on the roadside.

Good job, Walt. I was already knowledgeable about the material, but still found it useful. If you ever do a revised edition, here is a suggestion... The tip for out-of-gas situations, where the car has ended up on a tilt and the fuel pump suction in the gas tank is now uncovered, and you say to rock the car to slosh fuel over to the suction, great tip. But you might continue that to tell the reader that after the car now starts, immediately move it back to level ground because gravity never stops working. The car will die again right away as the fuel runs downhill again. This will be obvious to the mechanically inclined like me, but not likely to the average non-mechanical driver.It was interesting to hear your experiences and how often each type of break-down happened.It is very generous of you to give your time and expertise to help people. If I help anyone, I would also not expect to be paid, except for any fuel I would provide. People ought to pay for the gas they get. That's only fair to you. I especially hope you don't give free gas to people driving a BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, and the like.

Walt's book was a recent success for me as I purchased 2 copies as Christmas gifts for our two recently licensed grandchildren.It reads quickly but immediately emphasizes how drivers can do themselves big favors by quickly becoming better prepared for the problems seen everyday on the roadways.Walt has made this written record of recommendations based on his daily "good deeds assisting motorists he encounters locally". He has always helped out everyone he meets who is experiencing some type of auto breakdown. More importantly, these encounters almost always become "teachable moments" helping illustrate how the owner or driver might have avoided the problem with a bit more preparation before their trip.Now I can tell the kids b,,"Be sure you check your trunk for the board you may need to place under the jack if you need to change a flat tire".

This is an excellent resource I stumbled on while looking to gather the tools to pursue the same hobby: neighborly roadside assists. This straightforward book is a collection of solutions to common problems and encouragement to prepare for them. But, what I enjoyed most is his passion for helping others.We live in a self-centered world. When I stop to help a stranded motorist, even those content to wait for AAA, they often say, "Thanks for stopping, you're the only one." Our cities and towns could use a few more intentional neighbors to pursue this or similar hobbies that focus on the well-being of others.Whether you're looking to be prevent becoming a stranded motorist or to help others, pick up this encouraging book. By the time you finish, you might even find your faith in humanity restored.

I purchased this for my daughter so she'd have some resources if she broke down. I read it and learned a lot myself! Lots of little things you might not have thought about if you were broke down and in a flustered state. Fun!

Excellent handbook, provided great tips and some interesting stories. Very simple and straightforward advice. As a woman with limited vehicle knowledge it is a great read.

An absolutely great book which points out the most critical areas for drivers to prepare for potential breakdowns. Reading this easy to read book should greatly reduce problems with ones cars.

Within the last 30 years, after working in the health field as a medical professional and obtaining a copy of the first edition of this very helpful guide, this book is outstanding in every aspect as a valuable reference to emergency situations, where no other help is available. Although I have collected hundreds of books that cover this topic, I felt this one is extremely useful for my daughter to have in her home. This handbook outlines several conditions for one to identify with as it offers step-by-step instructions, with solutions for unexpected health problems. This informative guide also prepares for any disaster, where help is not on the way. It is specifically designed for the non-medical professional to help deal and cope with unexpected issues during emergencies. Some of the topics covered are fractures, nosebleed, chest pain, and much more. Dr. Joseph Alton highlights several medical conditions, covering over 100 medical issues. In addition, he provides information on how to handle different situations, what to look for, and how to treat. This is a valuable, essential reference book for every home. Highly recommended!

My husband and I live on a farm. Our purpose in doing so was to leave all the trappings of the corporate America lifestyle. With nothing but optimism, we gladly gave up the old lifestyle in favor of the new one. We didn't kid ourselves; we knew it wouldn't be a piece of cake, but we were ready to put in the work. What was the one thing we hadn't considered living deep in the backwoods? Emergency medicine. Our farm is at the top of a mountain and we fall all the time. Most falls result in bruises and nothing more. Twice, however, my falls have required stitches. What if... We often ask ourselves what if questions. What if my husband hadn't been there and I couldn't drive myself to the emergency room? What if he were home and the roads were blocked, which happens in the boonies all the time--especially after a major thunderstorm or a tropical storm/hurricane? We bought The Survival Medicine Handbook both on Kindle (for tips on what to stock up on and to educate ourselves) and the printed version for emergencies. I can't recommend this book more highly. It is really jam packed with extremely valuable information--both for the emergency and for preparing ourselves in the event of one. Every family should have one. Whether you live in the city, the suburbs or in the backwoods, you don't know when access to a hospital will be hindered. It's truly a must have!

There is a lot to wade through in this book. The author, a physician, clearly states that a lot in his book should be done if there is no disaster and hospitals with medical personnel are NOT available. Doing otherwise many medical procedures in his book is clearly practicing medicine without a license. When disaster of some kind strikes - earthquake, violent riots and lots of firearms used, perhaps an EMP strike with a missile from a freighter, whatever the extreme situation - then this book will be invaluable. He also gives lists of supplies to have in a survival medic kit and to start patiently putting together and acquiring NOW and get more medical training if possible. He also emphasizes developing a positive attitude about disasters now, a "gloom and bloom" mindset, not a negative "gloom and doom." The Achilles heel of the the U.S. is over reliance on computers to do everything. Once some malevolent hacker or country that hates the U.S. finds a way to shut down the electrical power from the Mississippi River to the East Coast or worse, and does it, using this book to be prepared for it will pay off well.

The love this book - (and as the author admits) this is a huge book of everything you need to consider and prepare for; IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE A CAMP OR COMMUNITY MEDIC. It is a great planning guide with lots of considerations. This is not a how to practice or administer survival medicine. You will need a much more comprehensive book for that. This a a guide for all you to have a list of all the things you have to be ready for. I have to redo a lot of what I had and have to add a bunch of things I had not considered before. Great guidebook!

I was surprised by how much of this I already knew, but then I am not the normal customer I think. If you need to develop a basic understanding of first aid and survival medicine, especially some tricks on what to stock and what to grow, this is a good book for you!If you are already know basic first aid, you are pretty far down the road.
