Good book, basic words. Has pictures with Russian words at the bottom of the pictures, with immediate translation in English. Would be better if it also had "Russian" word written with English letters too so my 7 year old could try to figure it out and for his reviews. This book is more entertaining to my son then my daughter. I don't see how it is possible to use this book without someone who can speark/read Russian to help you, at the very minimum you'd need to know the Russian letters and sounds they make to be able to make out the words. Bought it for my children (5 and 7) along with some cartoons in Russian, and language teaching CDs to listen to in the house (like "drive and learn" style), and Russian language teaching DVDs (like Rosetta Stone) for them to watch while driving around. The combination of all four plus my talking to them in Russian seems to be SLOWLY working. I didn't teach them when they were tiny babies, now I have to play catch up. I'd estimate 6 months for us for basic conversation level if they don't lose interest doing solid 30 minutes a day with this book and AZBUKA (teaches Russian ABCs and all animals that are associated with each letter) and watching something in Russian every day. We've been onto it for over a month, maybe 5-6 weeks, and I think they are about at 80 words, very random words, can't make out a sentense yet, but we are trying. My son would say: "poshli dom" instead of "poshli domoi" (let's go home), or "ya voda" (I water). Have to be consistent, it is part of our evening routine now. I got a permission from my son's teacher to make Russian reading count towards his 20 mins of daily reading requirement, and that is more motivating for my son (I still try to make him read in English if time and his alertness level permit and the teacher makes him read a little more at school, per our mutual agreement). My whole family speak Russian so when we go to visit them next summer I am hoping the children will understand enough after my teaching them using this book and the DVDs; my plan is to leave them with my family for at least a week (or two) and travel Europe with my American husband, kids should pick up on Russian quick being in only Russian speaking enviroment. I'll try to remember to check in here in my 6 estimated month to note our progress. For sure a year of studying would do, for kids speaking level. Hope this helped.

My kids (4 and 18mos) love this book, and my oldest thinks it's cool how it is set up like a look and find book. The words are off to the side with individual pictures, and the center of each page is one big picture with everything in it. He loves looking for all the little things within the picture. Great book.

When I went to live in foster care at 10 I wanted to read this book. I purchased it with my allowance and then was told I had to take it back. Because I had crossed out the price on the book, the used bookseller wouldn't let me return the book for full price. I stood in the back of his store tears streaming down my face because this was the book that I thought I needed to read to understand what it meant to start middle school and all the changes my new found friends were going through. Up to that point I was raised by all men in a pretty neglectful environment. Now don't ask me why it took me over 30 years to finally get the courage (yes courage) to read this book. It was not the awful "sex' book my foster mother told me it would be, and I think if I read it back then, a lot of questions I was never given the answers to would have been more readily available for me. It was a quick read and should be something that girls of that age are afforded the opportunity to read. There is nothing in this book that might change how they behave, but it could give young girls at that age the confidence to have open and honest discussions with their mothers about this time in their lives.

Bought, thia for my 11 year old to read since she doenst especially like talking about her changes. I read this book myself first . such a great book, for young girls,to read!!. Also brought me back to,my childhood and they way things used to be.

Although this is an older book, it still touches on all the things young girls worry about like body image, boys, friends, and periods. Told in kid friendly first person, it's a true classic. My very bright 8 year old granddaughter absolutely devoured it!

My brother and I are "Irish Twins", so we were in the same grade throughout our whole school career. He got all of the awesome, tenured teachers, whose students loved them so much that they still continued to visit them well into their middle and high school years; their classrooms had epic decor themes like "under the sea" or "summer fun."I was a straggler kid, looking in from the outside and always longing for what he had. My assortment of teachers were either (a) fresh out of college and trying experimental forms of teaching (ugh), (b) had extreme chips on their shoulders and were organizing unions to stick it to the man, or (c) filing for divorce. This equated to bare walls and zero pizza parties. The agony!Worst yet, we didn't read any of the cool books all the other classes were reading! I remember getting sick and tired of hearing of this baby named "Fudge" (of all the crazy names), and all the trouble that he got into, from some friends in other classes. So now, all these years later, I finally understand what all the hype was about, and for once it wasn't overstated. I LOVED Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing! Peter Hatcher, the 9-year-old protagonist, has a pretty great setup. He lives in New York City, close to Central Park, he's loving his 4th grade class, has nice friends...except his 2-year-old little brother, Fudge, keeps ruining things. He's a the cutest little monster you ever saw.I would have loved to have read this as a child, especially when my little sister came into the world when I was 8. I didn't like her. She was a cutie, but she just disrupted everything. I felt like no one understood where I was coming from, least of all my parents, who could see no wrong in anything that she did. That's the beauty of this book, because while it is hilarious and cute, it's not patronizing and adult. I love the relationship Peter has with his mom--she's a bit of a sarcastic wit, and I like that. One thing that made me laugh was when Peter was describing how cautious he had to be about walking in Central Park alone because of muggers and dope pushers. I thought to myself, this is not the NYC of You've Got Mail. This is the NYC of Klute in 1972! I will definitely be continuing with the series, and very soon.

This story made it hard for me to stop reading at night. I adore the four PTS's and how much Margret learns over the course of the year. However, this book may not be suitable for children under about ten years old. I say this because of the detail it goes into with things like religion and growing up. I really enjoyed this fantastic book.

An old favorite. My daughters liked it and now my granddaughter has read it. She actually read the whole book in one day.

My 8yo old son loved this book. He picked this one up on his own without any coaxing from me for reading time every evening. He laughed out loud several times and had to stop and tell me about whatever funny thing was happening. He was so surprised to find out that his book wasn't written recently.

This was a gift for an eleven year old's birthday. The next time I saw her she ran to me, hugged me and told me it was the best book she had ever read. Her moms beamed they had read it as a family and it had opend up all kinds of things for them to talk about. SCORE!

Toads and Diamonds, by Charlotte S. Huck

From Publishers Weekly

Selfishness gets its comeuppance and the punishment is toads in a snappy retelling of Perrault's fairy tale. The folksy, dense paintings by Lobel (previously teemed with Huck for Princess Furball) give an edgy immediacy to the fantastical story of Renee, a sweet maiden with an evil step-family. For aiding an old woman, Renee is rewarded with a magical gift: jewels and flowers will drop from her lips whenever she speaks. Her stepsister Francine goes in search of the same blessing. Lazy and shamelessly cruel to animals and people, Francine finds herself cursed with a profusion of snakes and toads instead of diamonds. The almost nauseating heaps of scaly creatures seem the perfect offspring of Francine's sour visage, and the plain, peasant-like Renee is a refreshingly ordinary heroine. When she wins the heart of a handsome prince, it's clear he loves her for her noble heart, not her appearance nor her jewels. Huck adds a little innovation of her own, too: the blessing and curse are to last only "as long as there will be a need for it," and while Francine seems doomed forever, Renee is reprieved on her wedding day from a lifetime of issuing oral projectiles. Ages 5-up. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3?This retelling of the French folktale about the kind and unkind (step)sisters is supported by impeccable scholarship and crisp, thoughtful storytelling. Huck makes the story her own through her choice of name for the resourceful heroine, Renee (meaning reborn). She also puts a limit on the young woman's unusual reward: jewels and flowers will drop from her mouth when she speaks "as long as there will be a need." In her carefully documented author's note, Huck explains that it was important for Renee to be loved for herself. The entire narrative satisfies from beginning to end. Lobel's watercolor and gouache paintings amply illuminate the story. From the first illustration, the stepmother and stepsister dominate the page, often shunting Renee to one corner. Lobel captures textures with her brush: the velvet gowns of Francine and her mother, in contrast to their doughy faces, the leaves and flowers of the trees and plants, the smooth, faceted gems that fall from the kind sister's lips, and the scaly or spotted skins of snakes and toads that fall from Francine's mouth. The striking typeface is slightly fanciful, yet clear and easy to read. This appealing collaboration from the creators of Princess Furball (Greenwillow, 1989) is a lovely addition to folktale collections.?Donna L. Scanlon, Lancaster County Library, PACopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Lovely story for children about the power of words, but we adults can re-learn a few lessons about our speech too. Read it aloud with your children, grandchildren, or use it as a lesson in a school class. Nice illustrations to go with the text.

Wonderful...a nice journey

Glad to find the old story that I remembered as a child.Good lesson for today's children to learn. Will read to all my grandchildren.

"Toads and Diamonds" is a wonderful retelling of a classic fairytale about two sisters. Renee is a sweet, kindhearted young girl who is oppressed and mistreated by both her stepmother and stepsister, Francine. A chance encounter with an old woman in the woods changes Renee's life and she is given a unique gift, one which arouses the envy of both her stepmother and stepsister. When stepsister Francine is compelled to go and seek out a similar gift, the outcome is rather different. The story is well-told with a unique spin on the original tale which I felt was apt - in the original Renee's gift (the younger sister is unnamed in the original) continues for the rest of her life, but here the author has placed a limit on her gift, so that Renee is loved and respected not for her talent but for her own, sweet self. The illustrations are in bold, vivid colors and fill up the pages, a treat for the eyes. Despite its rather unusual title, "Toads and Diamonds" is a wonderful retelling of a classic tale.

Overall I enjoyed this book well enough to finish it, which I typically won't unless I think it worthwhile, and I was intrigued enough to purchase and begin reading the sequel, Thunder and Twilight, which takes place more than 20 years later.I won't give any spoilers, although there really are few to betray. The book introduces several important figures of Fin-de-siècle Vienna. Persons of Viennese, Austrian, and international cultural renown are introduced in an isolated form, in such a way that suggests, from previous readings and viewings of films, that the figures fates will tie together by the end. For the most part, I felt this did not happen or did not happen significantly. But that is history as it was, I suppose, and perhaps my expectations as they were, not an issue with the writing.Suffice to say, notables such as Johann Strauss II, Gustav Klimt, Sigmund Freud, Gustav Mahler, Kaiser Franz Josef II and others share the spotlight Morton casts increasingly on Crown Prince Rudolph and, to a lesser extent, his young mistress, Mary Vetsera. That, I felt, was much of the shape of the book: a work of only supporting characters that eventually and increasingly focused around a particular plotline, the Mayerling incident. This is not a bad thing, in and of itself. Only the description left me hoping for a bit more with regard to the" interweaving of their fates."As Morton's historical narrative focuses more on the Crown Prince, I felt the writing was more compelling. Although parts of the book were at times dry, other parts were sweeping in their descriptions of both an aesthetic nostalgia of the famous city's facades as well as presenting an intriguing sociopolitical climate and the crux weighing on the Crown Prince. Indeed, A Nervous Splendor has provided fodder for my next, upcoming trip to Vienna as well as fueled an increased interest in this period of the city's history, especially upon consideration of how seemingly isolated events can send small ripples throughout space and time and affect the world so dramatically, if not tragically.I recommend this book to folks with an affinity for learning (more) about Vienna in the late 1800s but also, perhaps, those with an affinity for World War I history, the latter of which I have lacked until reading this book but have since been intrigued by it because of it. However, this book is not a great choice if a person is only going to read one non-fiction book to learn about Vienna during this time period. I say this because although it is well researched, much of the book's details are relatively mundane, as they should be. It reads almost like a novel at times. While this is enjoyable, it's not particularly fact-dense in an academic sense. So it may also appeal to those who are otherwise put off by more traditional, historical tomes.

This book does a pretty good job of throwing you back into the waning years of the Hapsburg dynasty and the capital of the Empire. The approach of taking a snapshot of one year (oh but what a year!) and discussing the lives of some of the Empire's most famous people at that time, some just beginning their careers, others toward the end, is an interesting approach that he could have exploited better, as some of the "characters" felt less fleshed out. Overall an interesting book, informative, engaging. I read it in preparation of seeing Vienna soon and I believe it will give me a good background and insight into what I will be seeing.

This book pulls together all the threads, cultural, political, social, and more, and ties them all together in a neat bow, yet reads like a novel. It furnishes us with a window into every level of the new thinking of which Vienna was the hub. We get to see the origin and development of what eventually became our own reality. Every art form, painting, music, architecture, literature, etc., with a dose of psychology added for good measure, gets a deeper meaning for us. We see the beginning of the attitude that was to culminate in the atrocities against Jews during WWII; the attitude that brought on the whole femme fatale movement that reached as far as movies like the Blue Angel; and a direction in architecture that is still visible not only Vienna, but Prague, Budapest, and New York, just to mention a few. And, of course, the tragic as well as tittilating Mayerling drama does not make detract from the readability of this very well researched and documented piece of literature on the fin-de-siecle.

This book, easy to read in style while difficult to absorb in content, deals nicely with the impact of Vienna frivolity and its archaic reliance upon tradition on such geniuses as Freud, Klimt, Mahler, and especially on Crown Prince Rudolf who drowned in his own unquenchable thirst for a modern Vienna. It really lays out for me many of the social issues and attitudes that paved the way for what happened less than 20 years later, as well as connecting us with the social dilemas we deal with today.

An interesting walk through a single year of a specific time of one of the most curious european cities. The Austro-Hungarian empire did a major contribution for the shape the whole twentieth century. While collapsing it spread innovative and controversial forms of thinking science, music, psychology, sexuality, economy, literature, space expansion, physics, chemistry, philosophy, politics, sociology, all blasted out of its geographical limits in the midst of an empire meltdown exploding under still nowadays controversial european nationalisms…Fredric Morton captures this strange feeling pressing Vienna in 1889. The world as they knew it was about to come to an end and, no one was really quite sure about what it would become like.It would be the dawn of a new century of fight to renovate society structures into a new order and new reality. A new Europe was rising, a painful birth out of a nervous splendor that started in Vienna in a hurry to renovate itself. Good reading.

If you are someone who has a decent background knowledge of European history and or Austrian history then this is for you. It helps to have knowledge of the Habsburg family as well since they are the central figures of the book.I have read this three times so must say I enjoy the story. The cast of people during this time are intriguing.Very enjoyable but packed with information. Really should have a good grasp of European history/politics.

As a person who loves Vienna and the history of the Habsburg Dynasty, I expected to enjoy this book. Given a subject so dismal as this "nervous season", I suppose it was difficult to craft an absorbing and engaging account without becoming tedious at times. Even so, I found this book's typographical errors unforgivable and felt the story could have been better written.

I expected this book to be hard work. I didn't know I'd love it.I bought it because, now an adult, I realize I've let too many classics get by me while I've read comparative garbage just because it seemed more fun. I KNOW the difference between good and bad literature, but I've been lazy since college or even before.I wanted to start back at the beginning and re-train my mind to want better things. Maybe I'm finally feeling my mortality or something. So this morning in a fit of insomnia, I picked up this book. WOW. So much fun! Every single entry leaves you with something to think about. This is what good children's' literature should be. It reminds me of why I preferred the 19th century authors when I was a child: there's a certain kind of whimsy in the language that modern authors just don't have. If I recall, even Edith Nesbit's books that weren't actually about magic still had that magical quality that excited me, and it's the language, not the content, that really matters.I think that's the real secret when it comes to helping a child want to read. So much of what is written for beginning "reading levels" has laudable content but no style, and that's plain boring for a kid. I remember. Heck, it's even more boring for the adult helping them to read, so everybody winds up unhappy. When you think about Kipling's Just So Stories, most of the actual information in them is absurd. The words give you a new angle on old material, one in which the rules are all different; it leads you to wonder WHY you think a certain way about a certain thing, and to laugh at the conventions of life and language, and maybe also to notice that the real world is as absurd as the fictional one.Bloom is right too that exposure to good children's literature prepares the way for appreciating good adult's literature. Though I've forgotten a lot, I DID read much of this stuff as a child. And when I pick up an adult classic expecting, as I did with this, to find it dry, I'm usually surprised to find the same qualities in it.In some ways this book is best as a kind of portable library or reminder list. You're better off owning the complete works of most of these writers (not to mention many more: this is still a very limited collection) but this is a decent shorthand version. If it sends a child out looking for more poetry by the same author she loves from this book, or if it excites comparisons, even unconscious ones, with other authors and leads her to make aesthetic judgments, it's done the job it was intended for.

Bloom presents a very good survey of what used to be called "children's literature." Bloom makes a compelling argument in his introductory essay as to why this literature is for everybody. If you were exposed to these works as a child, you were indeed fortunate. In today's, umm...less than intrinsically motivated society, most of the works presented in this tome are remedial reading. Grab some tea, get comfy, and get to work.

Harold Bloom is not only a leading literary critic and analyst; he is also a reader almost beyond measure. He has read more than even an avid reader would find possible in a couple of lifetimes. This makes it very easy for us to find things of value to learn from his writing and thinking about literature. At least it does for me.Bloom has such passion and love for prose and poetry that it infects me and I find his bold pronouncements an invitation to question and my own conclusion and preconceptions. Of course, Bloom wouldn't expect you to agree with him simply because he said it. He would invite challenge and argument, but be prepared in your challenges! This is a collection of forty-one stories and eighty-three poems that Bloom particularly loves and considers wonderful foundational reading. As he says, he does not believe in children's literature and these pieces wouldn't be found in most contemporary public primary school readings. But the poems are mostly short enough that a younger reader could go over them enough times to begin possessing them by heart in your memory. This is not a process of rote memorization, but of taking a kind of ownership through bonding with the material. What a great body of material Prof. Bloom has given us here. It is a bound series or riches offered as a gift for us to return to again and again and draw from throughout our life. Thanks, Prof. Bloom!

Perhaps Mr. Bloom and I have different views on intelligence. There were too many (some very long) stories that were fantasies, overwrought ghost stories, etc. It was like a collection of storieswhere the copyright had expired. There were only 3 storiesthat I found memorable.

This is one of those book every kid should have a chance to read. It is filled with great stories and poetry. We are using it as part of our literature course - Lightening Literature- and have really enjoyed everything we've read so far.The book is soft bound and divided by seasons. That is a fun way to organize a book of stories and poems.

A fine collection to expose young readers to classical literature.

This book is incredibly fun for adults and children. I bought this for myself because I love reading well done children stories, and I was highly curious about what Harold Bloom thought would be good for children. This was beyond my expectation. It has some of the great poets and storytellers through the ages. My niece just turned five and she loves it when I read her this collection of stories even though there are really no illustrations.

TRULY A GRAND BOOK!
