None of these sages are mentioned in the text, nor in any other book by Lazlo et al. I cannot think of one book that has more influence on me than Thus Spoke Zarathustra. It is a book that I once read at least once a year and it never failed to fill my mind with hope and ideas. I totally disagree with those who consider Nietzsche to be hard, stern, and without hope. I find nothing but hope in the works of Nietzsche. He deepest desire was to see humans remove the yoke of any oppressive ideologies which hindered thoughts and imagination. My initial reading of Zarathustra was very disappointing. I was not ready for the very stylized language he used but subsequent reading made me look beyond the style and see the thoughts behind them and then yielded the wisdom beneath. I make no claims to entirely understand Nietzsche but someone who dropped out before reaching high school I believe I have a fairly good grasp of his overall principles. His ideas are not so abstract that only scholars can understand them. I have now read most of his major works and consider him the single greatest influence on my own life and the perceptions of various institutions. As an atheist I was naturally drawn to his hostility towards most forms of organized religions---the exception for Nietzsche being Buddhism--but he was not grim or dour about this and always championed the "yay-saying" and discouraged the "nay-saing". His words can come across as a bit hard and cold but he felt he was in a desperate battle with a force that was robbing humanity of it's humanity and there was no sense mincing words about the consequences. He would have hated the Nazis. They were everything he despised about the regressive nature of humanity. The were devoid of all hope and their perverse use of the philosophy would have sickened him. This is a book that is still very valid and vital to the health of humanity. It should be read and reread.

A very good and dense book. I don't know if it was the prose, the translation, or the age of language in the text, but I found myself reading a few passages multiple times to really understand it. But all-and-all, a great read.People have spent decades writing long explanations and commentary on the book, so I'll simply say that much of it I could relate to my own challenges and experiences in life and that its message resonated with me.

This is a good, straightforward and fairly literal translation, with helpful notes -- not too many, but useful. I much prefer it to the work of Walter Kaufmann which has for a long time been standard fare for university reading. Walter was better than the Nazified edition with the author's sister to speak for him. But there is a great deal of self-important nonsense by Mr. Kaufmann in his edition. Here we have a fine translation that may well become the new university standard, at least it is for me.

I believe Nietzsche saw his "Zarathurstra" as his magnum opus, the artistic-expressive summary of his beliefs.It is a wonderful book, and anyone who has read his other works will find that "Zarathustra" really does synthesize and summarize those other works.The challenge with "Zarathustra" and Nietzsche's other works, is the depth and breadth of his experience and scholarship. The more I read his works, the more I realize I miss...and to some degree must miss! I have a limited background in Classical studies, but not to the extent Nietzsche did. As another for-instance - I do not speak or read French or Italian, and so I can only analytically understand Nietzsche's statements about the cadences of those languages, and their connection to their local habitats, and the way they both reflect and influence their speakers' demeanors. Oh well! Something to shoot for, for me, I guess, to learn Spanish and French....and, German?!This is a very good translation with good end-notes. There are some references I think the translator missed, but that's ok.

Nietzche dances along the edge of schizophrenia, which a Horrobin has noted is HUMAN WRIT LARGE.There is nothing exceptional in normalcy, by definition, therefore only madmen can be geniuses.I Am well acquainted with schizophrenia, and Nietzche's work offers an insight into their intense inner world.He was spurned by the sane, not for loving too little, but for loving too intensely.You will wait in vain for the promised superman to emerge, for this is a story of his gestation, not his birth. We await his birth wondering who he is; and what his nature.Perhaps this is an overhang from Nietzche's monotheists past, with all their talk of "The Return of the Messiah"Us Vanatru, one the other hand, have our Sacred and eternal Wheel of Life.

I bought this for my wife. For some reason she really wanted to learn how to knit. Anyways, she hasn't tried it even once but I was reading through this book and it seems awesome. Not only is it informational, but it is really entertaining. Who knows, maybe I'll give it a try.

...and It has been an absolute pleasure! Debbie Stoller reminds me of the best teachers in life: funny, smart, cool, and just has a gift for explaining things so you can easily understand and remember them. I know for sure it's an awesome book for beginers, since I was one! I got a very solid foundation of knowledge to work from, both from this book and the entire stitch n bitch series. Looking back, I thinks it's impressive how much she manages to teach you in just this first volume:-Information about knitting needles and yarn (the various weights and fibers, how to read a yarn label, etc)- How to cast on and bind off-Knit and purl stitches-knitting structure and gauge-knitting flat and in the round-follow charts (I have never struggled with this and I believe it's because one of the first things I ever knit was this cool little exercise where you knit a textured heart following a chart)-Increase and decrease-Make cables-Work stripes, intarsia and fair isle (while catching the floats as you go!)-Fix problems (such as drop down a stitch, ladder up using crochet hook. This chapter is amazing and should be required reading for all beginner knitting classes. Learn from the stitch doctor!)-Buttonholes, seaming, blocking, tassles/fringe/com-pomsPlus fun things like recommended reading, tips and tricks, famous knitters, starting a knitting group... The book is also a great read! Along with a history of knitting she tells her own story and we get to see cool pics of her family and learn how the tradition was passed down. In fact there are cool, vintage pics of people knitting throughout. Which brings me to a point: get the print edition! The kindle edition only has some of the pics.This craft has enriched my life in a way that I never imagined when I first picked up this book about 12 years ago. Thank you Debbie!

I can't say enough about this book, and it's all good! First off, I received it this afternoon and haven't been able to put it down. It has everything you need and more. Everything from explaining knitting styles, to pictures, where and how to find local stitch and bitch groups, online resources, patterns...I could go on forever! There are even a few sewing patterns so you can whip up your own knitting tote and needle case. Also there is a knitting pattern by Diana Rupp, who is another fun chick with great books also.I have put off learning to knit for way too long. Debbie Stoller makes everything so fun and easy to understand, which totally takes the intimidation out of taking on knitting. Just buy this book, and now! You won't be sorry.ALSO, I found her on YouTube, there are a few great videos for beginners so between that and this book you will be almost set.INSIDE SCOOP: the first project she mentions are using size 8 needles 14 inches long. once you complete that, move on to the next which is a scarf using size 17 needles. This is the book I used to teach myself to knit. The instructions are very clear and it is written in a more casual style than most instructional books, which is just what I needed to be able to understand some of the techniques without having an experienced knitter to teach me. The patterns are fun but the designs do tend to be geared towards teens or young adults. I have only knit a few of the designs presented, but this book is a great reference guide and I keep it within easy reach when I am knitting in case I am a little unclear on a technique. I would definitely recommend this to others (and I have)!

The intro to this book was enough to give me incentive to go from SAMPLE to BUY WITH 1-CLICK but I was soon to be disappointed after making the purchase and reading further. For starters it wasn't obvious she favors the English style over Continental and had I known that I would have simply deleted the sample and moved on to another book. The photos are of low-quality on the Kindle edition which surprised me considering she was the founder of a zine and should know better.The only reason for three stars is the cute little illustration of the front and back legs of a stitch--that alone is golden and a terrific takeaway from this book.

When I first started knitting (more years ago then I'm willing to admit) I found this sassy, fun to read, best beginner book ever at my library. I checked it out so many times I finally bought it. It contains the most essential lessons and ' know how' for the beginner and I referenced back to it for years. Forward many, many years later... I am now an advanced knitter yet have gifted this book more times then I can think to friends, niece's and those who have asked...."How do you do that?"

I spin, crochet and tat, but have knitted only four items in my life (doll shawl, scarf, scarf, scarf). Decided to try again, see if I like it.I don't hate it. Knitting, that is. The book I actually like. She gives resources, too. Although you can find plenty of free tutorials online, you need other knitters to let you know which videos are worth your time, so get this book and find your LYS (local yarn store) and ask.

Good book, basic words. Has pictures with Russian words at the bottom of the pictures, with immediate translation in English. Would be better if it also had "Russian" word written with English letters too so my 7 year old could try to figure it out and for his reviews. This book is more entertaining to my son then my daughter. I don't see how it is possible to use this book without someone who can speark/read Russian to help you, at the very minimum you'd need to know the Russian letters and sounds they make to be able to make out the words. Bought it for my children (5 and 7) along with some cartoons in Russian, and language teaching CDs to listen to in the house (like "drive and learn" style), and Russian language teaching DVDs (like Rosetta Stone) for them to watch while driving around. The combination of all four plus my talking to them in Russian seems to be SLOWLY working. I didn't teach them when they were tiny babies, now I have to play catch up. I'd estimate 6 months for us for basic conversation level if they don't lose interest doing solid 30 minutes a day with this book and AZBUKA (teaches Russian ABCs and all animals that are associated with each letter) and watching something in Russian every day. We've been onto it for over a month, maybe 5-6 weeks, and I think they are about at 80 words, very random words, can't make out a sentense yet, but we are trying. My son would say: "poshli dom" instead of "poshli domoi" (let's go home), or "ya voda" (I water). Have to be consistent, it is part of our evening routine now. I got a permission from my son's teacher to make Russian reading count towards his 20 mins of daily reading requirement, and that is more motivating for my son (I still try to make him read in English if time and his alertness level permit and the teacher makes him read a little more at school, per our mutual agreement). My whole family speak Russian so when we go to visit them next summer I am hoping the children will understand enough after my teaching them using this book and the DVDs; my plan is to leave them with my family for at least a week (or two) and travel Europe with my American husband, kids should pick up on Russian quick being in only Russian speaking enviroment. I'll try to remember to check in here in my 6 estimated month to note our progress. For sure a year of studying would do, for kids speaking level. Hope this helped.

My kids (4 and 18mos) love this book, and my oldest thinks it's cool how it is set up like a look and find book. The words are off to the side with individual pictures, and the center of each page is one big picture with everything in it. He loves looking for all the little things within the picture. Great book.

When I went to live in foster care at 10 I wanted to read this book. I purchased it with my allowance and then was told I had to take it back. Because I had crossed out the price on the book, the used bookseller wouldn't let me return the book for full price. I stood in the back of his store tears streaming down my face because this was the book that I thought I needed to read to understand what it meant to start middle school and all the changes my new found friends were going through. Up to that point I was raised by all men in a pretty neglectful environment. Now don't ask me why it took me over 30 years to finally get the courage (yes courage) to read this book. It was not the awful "sex' book my foster mother told me it would be, and I think if I read it back then, a lot of questions I was never given the answers to would have been more readily available for me. It was a quick read and should be something that girls of that age are afforded the opportunity to read. There is nothing in this book that might change how they behave, but it could give young girls at that age the confidence to have open and honest discussions with their mothers about this time in their lives.

Bought,thia for my 11 year old to read since she doenst especially like talking about her changes. I read this book myself first . such a great book,for young girls,to read!!. Also brought me back to,my childhood and they way things used to be.

Although this is an older book, it still touches on all the things young girls worry about like body image, boys, friends,and periods. Told in kid friendly first person, it's a true classic. My very bright 8 year old granddaughter absolutely devoured it!

My brother and I are "Irish Twins", so we were in the same grade throughout our whole school career. He got all of the awesome, tenured teachers, whose students loved them so much that they still continued to visit them well into their middle and high school years; their classrooms had epic decor themes like "under the sea" or "summer fun."I was a straggler kid, looking in from the outside and always longing for what he had. My assortment of teachers were either (a) fresh out of college and trying experimental forms of teaching (ugh), (b) had extreme chips on their shoulders and were organizing unions to stick it to the man, or (c) filing for divorce. This equated to bare walls and zero pizza parties. The agony!Worst yet, we didn't read any of the cool books all the other classes were reading! I remember getting sick and tired of hearing of this baby named "Fudge" (of all the crazy names), and all the trouble that he got into, from some friends in other classes.So now, all these years later, I finally understand what all the hype was about, and for once it wasn't overstated. I LOVED Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing! Peter Hatcher, the 9-year-old protagonist, has a pretty great setup. He lives in New York City, close to Central Park, he's loving his 4th grade class, has nice friends...except his 2-year-old little brother, Fudge, keeps ruining things. He's a the cutest little monster you ever saw.I would have loved to have read this as a child, especially when my little sister came into the world when I was 8. I didn't like her. She was a cutie, but she just disrupted everything. I felt like no one understood where I was coming from, least of all my parents, who could see no wrong in anything that she did. That's the beauty of this book, because while it is hilarious and cute, it's not patronizing and adult. I love the relationship Peter has with his mom--she's a bit of a sarcastic wit, and I like that.One thing that made me laugh was when Peter was describing how cautious he had to be about walking in Central Park alone because of muggers and dope pushers. I thought to myself, this is not the NYC of You've Got Mail. This is the NYC of Klute in 1972! I will definitely be continuing with the series, and very soon.

This story made it hard for me to stop reading at night. I adore the four PTS's and how much Margret learns over the course of the year. However, this book may not be suitable for children under about ten years old. I say this because of the detail it goes into with things like religion and growing up. I really enjoyed this fantastic book.

An old favorite. My daughters liked it and now my granddaughter has read it. She actually read the whole book in one day.

My 8yo old son loved this book. He picked this one up on his own without any coaxing from me for reading time every evening. He laughed out loud several times and had to stop and tell me about whatever funny thing was happening. He was so surprised to find out that his book wasn't written recently.

This was a gift for an eleven year old's birthday. The next time I saw her she ran to me, hugged me and told me it was the best book she had ever read. Her moms beamed they had read it as a family and it had opend up all kinds of things for them to talk about. SCORE!
