Wonderful piece of knowledge. In this book Plato introduces us to the brilliant mind of Socrates and his belief in afterlife. The concepts of heavens and hell. he talks about the earth and in many different aspects. Many things that people take as Christian values do not seem to be the case after reading this book. It sheds a light on the many aspects of our belief system, spirituality etc. Must read if you want to have a better understanding of Christianity and its roots. This book contains; before Socrates' trial, his trial and after his trial.

The Last Days of Socrates is a essential reading for anyone with an interest in philosophy or Western culture. What I find so amazing about and most ancient philosophy is that the questions it raises are still relevant today. For those readers not familiar with Plato, the author of the four dialogues that make up the book, he lived during the fourth century BC. Plato is credited with founding the Academy in Athens, which was essentially the first institution devoted to philosophical research and teaching. Many scholars claim it was the prototype of all Western universities.It's interesting to note that, Plato was a student of Socrates. And much like Jesus Christ, we have no written documents from Socrates himself. Strangely, this isn't the only similarity between Socrates and Jesus Christ either. Whatever the reason, it seems that many people in modern society believe that the philosophy of the ancients is not relevant to them. I believe the contrary and I'm not sure we're any wiser in the modern era. In fact, I'm quite sure that we aren't. Yes, technology has changed, but life's most important questions have not. And we still don't have answers to them. If anything, there are more distractions and noise that keep us from pondering the mysteries of life today.Anyway, this book is a collection of four early Socratic dialogues: "Euthyphro," "Apology," "Crito," and "Phaedo." Translator Harold Tarrant explains in his introduction that most scholars do not believe the events depicted by Plato actually happened, but rather, they are Plato's depiction of Socratic philosophy in action. It's also worth noting that the Socratic dialogues were not unique to Plato.In the "Euthyphro", Plato writes: "Consider the following point: is the holy approved by the gods because it's holy, or is it holy because it's approved?" This dialogue essentially examines Socrates' questioning of religion, more specifically, holiness or piety. Holiness was one of five Greek virtues. It seems that the purpose of the dialogue is to explore the definitions of holiness by asking the difficult questions. We are left to consider whether Socratic doubt is more truthful and more valuable than unreasoned religious dogmatism. "The question which excites the Socratic mind is how anybody, man or god, can recognize any action as an instance of goodness. What is the standard, and in what terms can we express it?" On that question it must be said that "Euthyphro" fails to provide an answer that suffices.In the "Apology", Plato writes: "It is because they enjoy hearing me examine those who think that they are wise when they are not; an experience which has its amusing side." The classic scenario in a Greek tragedy is when a person of high moral principle is confronted step by step with a bad situation from which there is no escape, oftentimes through a conflict with people of lower moral principles. As the "Apology" demonstrates, the art of writing a tragedy was not lost on Plato.The "Apology", then, is Socrates' self-defense at his trial. Socrates, using his rhetorical skills, talks of the ills apparent in the Athenian government. According to Plato, Socrates did not live an ordinary and quiet life. He didn't care for the things that most people care about: making money, a comfortable home, high status, and political appointments. He certainly was not afraid of dying. As he said, "Nothing can harm a good man either in life or after death, and his fortunes are not a matter of indifference to the gods."Socrates supposedly said: "It is only too likely that neither of us has any knowledge to boast of; but he thinks he knows something which he does not know, whereas I am quite conscious of my ignorance. At any rate it seems that I am wiser than he is to the small extent, that I do not think that I know what I don't know." Accordingly, this book really ought to be read by anyone seeking a liberal education.

As Socrates abstained from recording his philosophies, we must thank Plato for having the insight to preserve Socratic thoughts for posterity. As a student of Socrates, it seems that Plato, through his own writings, attempts to preserve the memory of his well respected teacher.In The Last Days of Socrates, Plato begins with Euthyphro and we see the Socratic method in action. Socrates and Euthyphro discuss the nature of piety, and through a serious of thought provoking questions, Socrates argues for what he feels is the proper relationship between Man and God.Next, Plato discusses the trial of Socrates by the Athenian aristocracy. Again, we see Socrates using his rhetorical skills in illustrating the hypocrisy and prejudice pervading throughout the Athenian government. Socrates discusses what role a good citizen should play in government. He announces his being a "gadfly" on the hide of the establishment, and we also find Socrates exposing his own intelligence by claiming that he, in fact, knows very little. The Apology is by far my personal favorite section of the book.After Socrates conviction, we find him discussing the morality of obeying or breaking laws in Crito. He meets with one of his close friends and the two discuss Socrates' options in regard to his death sentence. Here we see Socrates espouse the belief that it is acceptable to break an unjust law, however, one must also accept the consequences for breaking said law in order to preserve the stability of society.The Last Days of Socrates tackles many complex issues which are as relevant today as they were when first committed to paper in the 4th century B.C. This should be standard reading for any introductory course in political theory, and a must have for anyone interested in philosophy or ethics.

Truly life changing. Highly recommended for those in law school.

This book has great general information for parents that have not done any research yet or have any personal knowledge of the Marine Corps. It was recommended on one of the support boards i joined with my son enlisted, so I got it. I read through it in an afternoon, many things I already knew or had just learned from the support boards and the Marine Corps website. It is handy to have it all in one place for reference and I will keep it in the Marine Corps box I made my son so may years from now he can have a memento.If you have done a lot of web searches and joined support boards/groups - this might be a skip for you as it is just a repeat of information.

I was disappointed in this book because I have already read through many websites about the Marines directed towards parents and this book promised me inside information from a parents perspective. What I found was biased towards Parris Island (presumably because that's where the author went to boot camp) and felt like it was copied directly from the Marines website (I know it wasn't copied exactly because there are typos throughout). I didn't learn anything new! Save your money on this book and try "Into the Crucible"

My son has memorized this book, and recites it with great drama and depth of feeling. It is one of his all-time favorites, along with Too Many Frogs and Chicken Scratches. If I'm going to hear a book a thousand times, this is not a bad choice.

as a part there are books that you read because your kid likes them, this book is the complete oposite. i could read this book every day and still find it interesting and funny. My 3 year daughter loves it too. My husband bought it on his Kindel electronically first, but you could tell that the covers and back of the book had fun stuff that just didn't reall translate electronically, so we bought the actual book. Totally worth it!

I couldn't make the tiny text larger as instructed when I opened the book and couldn't figure out how to get the instruction back. Also our 2-year-old expects to make pictures bigger and smaller with his fingers which cannot be done in this book. I plan to return it as the ad said one could do. This is for the Kindle FIRE version. The pictures were great, but I would have liked to be able to make them and the tiny print larger.

My husband and I heard the author read this book on NPR yesterday. I was so delighted with it that I immediately ordered it for my granddaughters. I may just get a copy for myself. The story is amusing but also has some good lessons to impart -- the best kind of learning experience, in my opinion. The illustrations are as entertaining as the story is, and the chickens are both silly and sympathetic. I can't wait to read it to the girls! A perfect book to read aloud and share, talk about, together.

My son really enjoyed this book in print, so I could not resist when this book was offered for the Kindle at a discounted price for a limited time around Xmas. The sory is about a hen that lays an egg which contains an Enormous and very smart chicken. Through a variety of experiences this chicken sets all the other chickens straight when they rush to nonsense. I can see reading it multiple times and am glad to have it on the Kindle.

There are several characters in this book. If you read the story aloud using appropriate voices for each character - the book will reside in the annals of 'best storybook for children.' If you don't bring the characters to life - don't bother getting the book. This is a delightful book for children from toddler to first or second grade, and conveys a story that applies to daily life. Appropriately used, this could also be a great team building book for adults!

I love this book! It is soooo funny! It's in the top 3 on our bookshelf. The dialogue between the chickens is hysterical and my 3 year old thinks its so funny when they start guessing that he is something besides a chicken. I've read it with adults, elementary aged kids, preschool- everyone loves it! The pictures flow with the story line. Buy it now!

This is a fun book to read to my kids, age 5 and 3.

Robinson, a native of Daufuskie, one of the islands, writes that "most of our food came from the land-and water-around our tin-roofed home." Introducing most recipes are reminiscences of loading the wood stove, trips to the store, fishing for sheepshead, washing clothes on a washboard and cooking "long pots" (slow-cooked meals). Beautiful photos of island life and a relaxed attitude toward cooking ("these are recipes, not rules") make for accessible additions to anyone's Southern repertoire, with homespun dishes like Tada Salad, Sea Island Okra Gumbo and Fuskie Crab Patties. Sticky-Bush Blackberry Dumpling and Crackin' Conch and Rice are the kind of authentically regional recipes that are harder and harder to come by these days. Pot Full O' Coon and Fried Squirrel may not be the next trendy item on a Manhattan menu (Robinson admits she doesn't cook possum anymore), but these are the recipes that give the book its unique, almost anthropological intrigue. Since I already taught myself Cajun/Creole/Caribbean cooking 33 years ago, I ordered this book to better prepare for my upcoming trip to the Low Country. Sallie's stories preceding each chapter and many of the recipes really make this a worthwhile purchase and enjoyable reading. I can understand the phonetic dialect phrases, but would have a great deal of trouble understanding the spoken words in their thick Low Country accent.The recipes in this book are strikingly similar to those found in south Louisiana, except that Cajun adds lots of spices and Creole adds wine. As a cookbook for someone just starting to learn how to cook on a budget, I highly recommend this book. Just remember that one can always add pepper but can never take away once too much is added. I really appreciate these recipes being presented in their basic original form. Call it bland, but limited budgets and kids who complain of spicy food tends to keep cooking very simple. Once one starts experimenting and getting fancy, they risk cooking disasters that will never make it to the finest tables in gourmet restaurants. However, I doubt that gourmet chefs eat their own mistakes as I did to teach themselves to never try certain things again. Parts of this book even taught me a few things that I never knew.I also lived off of the crabs and fish that I caught back in 1985 and Sallie goes one step further to describe which fish to find in each season. (And now to give back, crabs come out from the mud anytime the temperature goes above 58 degrees Fahrenheit). Nothing was wasted or thrown away on Daufuskie and I feel the same way in my own cooking. This is true recycling. For organic farming, they used the charcoal ashes instead of pesticides, which is much more natural. It looks like the Gullah people of the Sea Islands were light years ahead of this "modern" world.

My trip inspired me to want to learn southern cooking. I previously purchased a Gullah cookbook when I visited the Gullah Festival in Beaufort, SC, and when I returned, my neighbor showed me her copy of Gullah Home Cooking the Daufuskie Way. I read the introduction by Pat Conroy who was the teacher who went to Daufuskie to teach the island children and the author of this cookbook was one of his students. I'm still learning to cook the Defuskie Way, but will try more of the recipes. Good book for those who like to try new recipes for old favorites. Please see my review for The Water is Wide.

I loved the stories. I loved the recipes. The first time her Mama left a live chicken under a crate and told her to kill and cook it by herself. Mama had business elsewhere and wanted supper ready when she and her Daddy came home. She remembered that Mama grabbed the the chicken and swung it around to kill it. She grabbed the chicken by the feet instead of the neck. The chicken freaked out and started flapping violently. She got scared and let the chicken go. The chicken ran into the woods.

This is more than a cookbook...it's a storybook! There is so much history of the area and of great home cooking Gullah dishes. Sallie Ann Robinson knows how to tell a story to go with her recipes, that is for sure!!! I love Southern cooking but Gullah cooking is somewhat different because these folks had to grow, harvest and cook their food as well as hunt and fish on a daily basis. They truly appreciated the land they lived on and treated it with respect. If you are looking for a good down home cookbook with a history lesson, too, this is the book for you and your friends!!!

Recipes are simple and full of culture. You can learn a lot from the stories about that time period. If you like food and history, get it.

I first read this book about 10 years ago. I checked it out from my local library in Greenville SC. I loved the little stories she told with the recipes. One day I was talking with my friends about the things I learned from her cook book and how I wish I had my own copy. One of them suggested I look for it on Amazon. I was so very happy to find it on here and order my very own copy. I recommend that if you love true southern cooking, that you get a copy of her cook book!. It definitely feeds your soul. The seller himself was quick and while the book was used, it was in great condition.

One of the best seafood recipe collections I've found in a long time. Whiting, shark, trout, conch, and of course oysters, shrimp, and crab, they're all here, Gullah-style. Many other amazing recipes that aren't overly delicate or difficult to prepare. Classic cookbook.

Being from Louisiana and using the Old Black Pot Series, Gullah Home Cooking is a welcomed addition to traditional cooking and is a added treasure to my collection. The recipes are great and I got a history lesson the the Daufuskie Island people and their way of life. When all that is incorporated into the book the meals are extra special. You might think the book would be lightweight and predictable, but the story goes beyond expectations and really resonates in today's world of intolerance. The book also elevated me spiritually. Kareem's skill as a writer, and hard work to get at the truth of his relationship with Coach Wooden is evident. I first read about Coach Wooden in the 1980s and came to appreciate his work ethic, honesty, and leadership. And I also had a lot of respect for Kareem, first watching him play for the Lakers, and then his later success as a historian and writer. So, I knew the book would be worthwhile, but it went beyond those expectations: two people from different races, different religions, and different parts of the country, several decades in age difference, and they come together with mutual respect for each other, a teacher and his student, and both learn from each other for a lifetime. I definitely feel inspired and enriched after reading this book.

Books about John Wooden should be required reading. You always come away learning something. What I enjoyed most about this one is how Kareem demonstrates how 2 thoughful, well intentioned people can have different views based on their life individual experiences, and be able to learn from each other's perspectives.

I've followed Kareem since he was Lew Alcindor in college. While one of my all time favorite athletes I'd always perceived a type of radical-ness that acted as a bolder, disrupting water in my river of perception. This book pulverizes that bolder. I believe it was misinterpretation on my part.I've read nearly all of the books written on Coach. Kareem tells stories I've never heard before. This is a special tale about two people's lives that intersected for decades, each having a profound effect on the other.

I just finished reading the E-book version. I couldn't stop reading it. OUTSTANDING. Thank you Kareem so much for sharing your times about a wonderful man to us.

Kareem Abdul-Jabber is an amazing writer. His respect and love for Coach Wooden is movingly communicated in this awesome book. Coach Wooden is shown to be a man who had flaws but never stopped trying to be a better person and trying to instill strong principles and values to others during his amazing life! Mr Abdul-Jabber tracks the growth of his personal experience with Coach Wooden from his being coach to his enduring life long friendship!!! Great insight from one of the greatest players of all time who is now one of the most thoughtful writers we have today!!!!

My eyes filled with tears at the end of this book. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did such a fine job of capturing the profound importance of his relationship with John Wooden that I shared his grief when Coach dies in the final pages. Abdul-Jabbar always struck me as a fiercely intelligent, complex and thoughtful guy. But his often stoic public demeanor prevented me from realizing how deeply sensitive, introspective and warm he is as well. This wonderful book put an end to that. It is brimful with emotion, often self-effacing but always remarkably candid and open. Both of these remarkable men factored heavily in my basketball fandom. That the most important dimensions of each of them are not actually directly related to their prodigious accomplishments on the court is remarkable. That the unique and life-long friendship they forged transcends all of it is, too.

Like many sports fans, I admired the long, successful careers of John Wooden and Kareem Abdul Jabber. What I didn't know is what is revealed in this book: the nature of their friendship, a friendship that can be a model for all of us to strive for.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar is one of our most intelligent athletes ever and has always followed a different drummer. Now a committed author with books and opinion pieces in papers like The NY Times. As a fan of John Wooden I had to read this book with low expectations. They were FAR exceeded.Jabbar is a very good writer and has quite a story to tell. How could a thin, tall athlete with left leanings maintain such an intimate relationship with a much older, conservative MidWesterner? How could these two opposing personalities meld until Wooden was in his 90s? And how could this amazing athlete write such a touching, compassionate story of the love and respect shared between Jabbar and Wooden? It's all here in these pages. Abdul-Jabbar was a GREAT basketball player, clearly intelligent. Most don't get a great chance at a second career. But Jabbar is a great writer/activist that deserves our attention. He's led an interesting, reflective life.Truly a special book that I could not recommend higher.
