First let me say that this is showing as a Free Vine Review. Although that is the case, I had it on pre-order before it was available on Vine, so I would have had it either way. Picture of pre-order included. When it comes to books about bitcoin, blockchain, and cryptoassets, the are as many books out as ICO’s and sadly they have the same depth and value, none. I am happy to be able to say this book is not one of them. This book has depth as well as value. There are several aspects I like about this book that I am going to write about in no particular order, because I like them all equally.First I will mention the writing style. The authors have an easy to read writing style that makes the book an enjoyable read.I love all the history in it. The book does a great job of covering the evolution of cryptoassets. They cover the good, bad, and ugly of bitcoin’s history and bring us into the present world of decentralized applications. The authors break cryptoassets into cryptocurrencies, cryptocommodities, and cryptotokens. They cover each one in detail and give a lot of examples of each in existence today. The examples include bitcoin, Litecoin, Ripple, Dogecoin, Dash, Monero, Zcash, Ethereum, Auger, dApps in general.I like that the author’s are not cryptozealots. They paint a realistic picture of the landscape and give fair warning to those that may embark on a ride of the cryptoasset roller coaster. The authors provide an analysis and valuation framework that lays out the elements to look for and analyze when deciding on weather or not an investment would be worth it. Their framework not only does a great job of listing all the elements, but they also do a great job of putting them into context, explaining their role, and what to look for.Another thing I have spent hours in is all the notes. They have a ton of great references. These totally sidetracked me several times. When I read a book I mark the outside with things I want quick access to or want to remember. I have added 2 pictures to the review to show you there is a lot of things you’ll want to recall as you go through your journey. If you are thinking about investing in cryptoassets, this book is a must read.

Cryptoasets: The Innovative Investor's Guide, provides a clear, concise overview of a rapidly emerging market and group of tools that will impact our lives for the better. Context is everything. I am not a professional trader or investor. Prior to getting involved with cryptoassets, I wasn't even remotely a hobby trader. I contributed to my retirement through work in typical mostly hands-off ways i.e 401k or mutual funds. I got involved with Bitcoin because I liked the technology and the societal implications. Once that hooked me, I had to figure out how to put that interest to use. That is where Chris Burniske and Jack Tatar come in with Cryptoassets. The authors provide a timely description of the investing landscape without turning over every stone or looking behind every tree. They paint with broad brush strokes using various cryptoassets to articulate a point. Without getting bogged down in too many details that change quickly in cryptomarkets, they filled in significant knowledge gaps and helped me understand how much I did not know about investing or how cryptoassets compare to conventional assets. There is a place for the highly technical description of cryptoassets or investing. That is not this book. The authors start with a brief historical overview, beginning with the 2008 financial crisis, providing a narrative baseline that helps make Bitcoin and all the cryptoassets that came after, make sense. The description of the technical aspects is not too complicated, while providing a clear solid description of what blockchain is and why it matters as an innovative leap forward. When discussing Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Golem, etc. many people default to calling these assets "coins" or "cryptocurrency". The authors do not do this. I think, one of the key points they bring to the discussion is that cryptoassets are not simply currency. Cryptoassets include currencies, along with commodities, and tokens. As the market matures understanding this will become more important. The distinction the authors make by focusing on assets verses currency also helps as they move through the topic of investing and how to determine the merit of one asset type over another. For someone who has not followed the development of cryptoassets from 2009 to the present, the description of how cryptoassets have been received by the traditional investing community and the US government, was particularly useful. It provides a picture of how developed the market is and what needs to happen for the market to continue mature relative to existing practices. As a prior hands-off/non-investor the discussion of financial tools like exchange traded funds (ETF), or the recent development of initial coin offerings, or initial cryptoassets offering, (ICO) and the current government perception of taxing cryptoassets was all very helpful. Most likely, cryptoassets will transform investing more than they already have. The book suggests possible ways this might play out without being overly rigid with assumptions.Practical overviews of exchanges, wallets, mining, were also helpful. There is an inherent limitation in discussing these subjects. The technical aspect can easily get mired down in quickly changing minutia, which is not the point or strength of this book. The authors also address the merit of cryptoassts as an asset class. They provide a defense of cryptoassets and, by comparison show how cryptoassets differ from money making schemes and fraudulent ways of separating people from their money. That is not to say no cryptoassets are scams. Like with fiat currency, scams exist within the crypto world. Cryptoassets are not inherently a scam. In fact, they offer many benefits. Although I was already convinced of the value of cryptoassets, these sections strengthened my own understanding and ability to talk with other people.I've ordered and read several books on cryptoassets. This book is easily one of the best places for a beginner or dabbler to start growing their understanding of cryptoassets and investing. It does an excellent job of introducing both. It should be in any crypto-investor's library. I hope as the market and technology develop this book is updated in order to remain current. As of early 2018 it is still quite relevant.I bought the Kindle, Audible, and hardcover versions. The Audible narrator, Dave Clark, made the sections I listened to easy to follow. I would listen to him again without reservation.

Definitely the most informative book on crypto assets so far. I have read 7 books so far on crypto-assets and bitcoin and whatnot but most of them were more like pamphlets and had information based on just that specific individual and how he became crazy rich and what not. This book, however, goes in deep dive to teach you the aspect of the regular financial market and bring that around on how bitcoin and other crypto-assets could mature around the current financial system. The use graphs, equations historical data to teach you about crypto assets and markets. This book definitely qualifies to be read twice in my list.

This is by far the most intelligent book I’ve read on investing in cryptocurrency. It applies the standards for evaluating all other investments to the cryptocurrency asset class. I suspect many investors will learn something about investing in general as well as how to apply it to cryptocurrency. My only criticism is that the book’s view of cryptocurrency doesn’t include an interesting class of tokens focused on exchange for assets (and to some extent being asset-backed). I own several of those currencies and don’t find that the book’s approach to evaluating the cryptocurrency applies. Maybe that will be addressed in future editions. There should be future editions of this book. The book cuts off at the beginning of January 2017 and we all know the explosion in cryptocurrency since then. I hope the authors revise and extend the book using their sound methodology so it doesn’t go too far out of date. We need more books like this with good investment advice and no hype.

I really love this book, but I had a concerns on the front it explicitly says "FOR KIDS!" although it has a joke about a pimp. Now I don't really care but if you want to explain what a pimp is go ahead I don't suggest this book for under 10 but whatever you want to do with your best judgement go ahead.other than that it is a great book or should I say a rib tickler?

After ripping out the page about the redneck pimp joke, it's a decent book of puns. Thanks to the other reviewers for pointing that out!!

Drawn to the Deep: The Remarkable Underwater Explorations of Wes Skiles

Review

“Journalist Hauserman does justice to the remarkable life of an explorer dubbed ‘Florida’s Jacques Cousteau.’ Wes Skiles died in a diving accident at age 52 in 2010, cutting short an impressive career that brought underwater discoveries to a wide audience. His pioneering underwater photography―which yielded breathtaking images of such natural wonders as blue holes, ‘stalactite-filled underwater Bahama caves’―was featured in National Geographic and on the Discovery Channel. Skiles’s addiction to risk resulted in experiences straight out of thrillers: fighting off a great white that had broken into his shark cage, narrowly escaping a collapse in an Australian cave system, and being the first person to walk on the largest iceberg in Antarctica. Perhaps his most lasting legacy is a PBS documentary series, Water’s Journey: Hidden Rivers, which showed the path drinking water takes en route to the tap and the impact of pollution on groundwater. Hauserman doesn’t overstate Skiles’s impact on public policy, noting that Florida’s government still allows companies to pollute the state’s aquifers. But despite that, Hauserman, who knew her subject personally, more than makes the case that Skiles’s innovation and daring added significantly to the understanding of a variety of aquatic worlds, and to the human impact on them.”―Publishers Weekly"As a teenager, Wes Skiles (1958–2010) began cave diving at Florida’s Ginnie Springs just for fun, and this after-school obsession eventually became his vocation. Cave diving led to his becoming an underwater photographer, a director of environmental films, and an explorer of some of the world’s most hidden places. Over the course of his 25-year career, he was filmed under a gigantic iceberg near Antarctica, escaped shark attacks in South Africa, campaigned to protect Florida’s aquifers from agricultural and industrial pollution, and became the first person to explore hundreds of miles of karst rock caves. Quoting Skiles’ friends and his own writings, biographer Hauserman portrays him as a likable family man driven by his love of diving, and she recounts many of his fantastic, often-dangerous adventures. In addition to meeting a compelling character, readers learn about the cutting-edge work of cave divers, oceanographers, and environmental scientists against a backdrop of government regulatory inaction. Viewers of National Geographic, Discovery Channel, and PBS Nature shows will especially enjoy this book."―Booklist“An intriguing, thought-provoking, and well-written book. . . . Hauserman successfully highlights [Skiles’] varied accomplishments and numerous contributions to exploration, education, and environmental awareness.”―The Underground Movement

Review

"It's easy to believe that humans evolved from the sea when you meet Wes Skiles. He was more at home underwater than above. Hold your breath as you read Julie Hauserman's wonderful tale of a most unusual man. And remember, this tale is true."―Bill Kurtis, announcer, Wait Wait . . . Don't Tell Me!"In this beautifully written, funny, moving biography, Hauserman takes readers on Wes Skiles's extraordinary adventures under the water and on terra firma as he fought to document and save the wild places he loved. This is a magical book about a man who lived every day loving his art, his family, and the blue ball of planet Earth."―Diane Roberts, author of Dream State: Eight Generations of Swamp Lawyers, Conquistadors, Confederate Daughters, Banana Republicans, and Other Florida Wildlife"Wes Skiles's photos and films are an inspiration to all of those who love nature―especially Florida's hidden watery world. People of his passion and determination are, and always have been, a rare breed. Hauserman has successfully captured the essence of Skiles in this long-awaited biography."―Michael Wisenbaker, archaeology supervisor, Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research"Paints a picture of a soul driven to document the natural phenomena of this world and to share it with others for the betterment of planet Earth and its people. It will inspire and make you think."―Shannon Switzer Swanson, National Geographic Explorer

This book traces the main events in the life of Wes Skyles. It documents through him, the discovery of Florida's unique Karst topography and groundwater flow. Like many brilliant thinkers, Wes was often disbelieved in his information regarding his discoveries. Only years later have we realized that he was correct all along. Hopefully his seminal work, Water's Journey, will change the hearts and minds of citizens of Florida. We are lucky enough to have one of the most beautiful and available sources of groundwater, springs like Wakulla that we can only hope to restore to it's natural abundance and beauty after Wes proved how groundwater can flow. This is a must read for anyone who loves swimming, diving or the amazing nature along our coasts and within our state! As for the lack of color pictures in the book, go to the resources in the back and watch some of the many works he created. It would be impossible to get across in a photograph!

a good read, great literary content....however.....lots of black and white photos of wes and his gear,... which have been seen in hundreds of other dive books. NOT ONE SINGLE COLOR PHOTOGRAPHS OF HIS STUNNING UNDERWATER PHOTOS WHICH MADE HIM FAMOUS.....A serious oversight by the author and the publisher.

A well-written biography of an interesting guy most of us have never heard of. Really enjoyed it.

Very well written narrative captures Wes' incredible exploits as well as his commitment to protecting our springs and waterways. An exciting and inspirational reflection on an adventurous life well lived.

Good book about a great guy.

Drawn to the Deep is the story of the life and Lifework of Wes Skiles; a modern explorer and self made environmentalist, photographer and top notch cave diver. This book reads like an episode on the Discovery channel, keeping you engaged, on the edge of your seat at times and above all, educating you about the beauty and fragility of our natural resources. Can’t wait to go back and look up issues of the National Geographic magazines and see his work all over again! With the current news of toxic algae blooms in the waters of Florida, the timing of this book couldn’t be better! My wish would be for everyone, especially those in the Florida legislature, to read this book.

If you are interested in caving in Florida Wes was one of the great explorers. Worth the read!

About the Author

William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England’s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children—an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare’s only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare’s working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.Barbara A. Mowat is Director of Research emerita at the Folger Shakespeare Library, Consulting Editor of Shakespeare Quarterly, and author of The Dramaturgy of Shakespeare’s Romances and of essays on Shakespeare’s plays and their editing.Paul Werstine is Professor of English at the Graduate School and at King’s University College at Western University. He is a general editor of the New Variorum Shakespeare and author of Early Modern Playhouse Manuscripts and the Editing of Shakespeare and of many papers and articles on the printing and editing of Shakespeare’s plays.

Picking up tis play to read I knew absolutley nothing about it other than having heard it's name. I have to say I am glad I took a chance on the unknown because this play was truly a pleasure to read. Once I got used to the English used in it reading it became almost melodic in my head. There is no doubt Shakespeare knew how to make words dance. This play almost feels like it should be two separate plays since they are so very different in feel. The first half a tragedy and the sequel a romance. I feel like Shakespeare wrote this play as sort of an homage to the Greek classics. if that was his intent, then I have to say he succeeded very well indeed. I loved that even with all the flowery language (multiple times requiring me to look up words) he quickly managed to start the film projector in my head I was seeing the action happening in my head. Truly a classic and I am so thrilled that my first foray into Shakespeare unknown to me was such a resounding success!!

This is one of Shakespeare's most powerful, and state of the art plays, yet it is still inadequately known and performed. His haunting portrayal of a charismatic political outsider, a man riven by a river of self-hatreds and insecurities and just as contemptuous of the mob as he is of the political elite who use him for their own purposes, is just as relevant today as in the 16th century, in the shadow of Essex. The book's introduction, by Jonathan Crewe is first rate in understanding both the play and the character of Coriolanus, and I recommend this play for anyone wishing to get his or her feet wet in learning about Shakespeare's tragedies.

Perhaps (?) not among the best known of Shakespeare's works, this play partakes of his ironic and tragic celebration of Roman ideals, namely, "laus", "gloria", "virtus" in particular. The aristocracy of Coriolanus' Rome "appears" dedicated to high-sounding and noble ends - Roman: honour, bravery, valour, proper governance. The governance is presented as "organic" and therefore just. Pleasure is significantly absent from this universe. Continuation as concept and even mere consequences - are best left out of sight. The character of Volumnia devalues what would be "feminine" ends in the language and imagery "she" uses, a deathly and mechanistic language used to describe her son. Marilyn French has seen similarities between Coriolanus-the-character and another notorious misanthrope, Timon of Athens: the search for honor, fame and the attempt to act according to socially accepted rules moves on to a quest for self-exaltation. Without firm rooting in the community - yet while using this very community - there is only the self, and the self cannot provide its own end. One editor having noted that the adjective "alone" occurs more often in Coriolanus than in any other play by Shakespeare, the isolation the eponymous character finds himself in is typical, as it were, of an opposition found between those heroes embodying the "chivalric" as opposed to the "heroic" or "Herculean" ideal (Antony, Coriolanus, Achilles in Troilus and Cressida.) But Hercules is a demi-god: the characters are not; punishment of hubris - Coriolanus' bravery leads to extreme arrogance, as he sets himself above all men - means banishment, isolation, and death.

Coriolanus is not --never has been -- one of my favorites of Shakespeare's works. But the volume under review is in the Arden 3rd series and I've slowly been working my way through the 3rd series volumes as they appear. I'm more than pleased to have read this new treatment of Coriolanus: the editor has done an outstanding job of providing historical context for the play, carefully comparing it to the treatment of the story given in Shakespeare's sources. The editorial machinery carefully adheres to the Arden series standards, explaining how other editions have dealt with textual problems, and providing cogent arguments for the choices made in this edition. I've even come to like the play better. Highly recommended.

The Winter's Tale (New Cambridge Shakespeare)Another crappy formatting job by Cambridge University Press. In order to read the play without insane and seemingly random line breaks, you have to set the font at its smallest size. When it's extremely hard to read. I checked it against Macbeth, in the same series. Macbeth is fine.So for an extra five bucks, you get a practically unreadable text. Nice job Cambridge. Nice job Amazon.

Twenty-nine year old David Bennett, an Australian living in the UK, has just released his first book, “A War of Loves” (Zondervan, 2018). Bennett self-identifies as a gay celibate Christian.Bennett states, “Identifying with others in the LGBTQI world can open up doors to engage people who need to hear about Christ.” (p. 215) So, in some conservative environments, for Bennett to own his identity as gay, is a bold move.Bennett wrote the book “to share how God's love has impacted my life. Rather than attempt to answer every question about homosexuality, I hope to provide in this book’s page a clear picture of how I was reconciled to God. The gay and Christian communities are often seen as polar opposites: one a progressive, inclusive community, the other a community of oppressive, archaic laws. Having stood on both sides, I know the reality is far more complex.” (p. 17)Commendably, Bennett adds, “I remember those who have deeply struggled or even committed suicide because they felt unable to reconcile their faith and sexuality. I stand too with my same-sex attracted or gay Christian brothers and sisters who are living faithfully before Christ.” (p. 19) Sadly, many in the Christian community refuse to see the link between theology and destructionion the LGBTQ community, nor will they attest to the presence of committed LGBTQ Christians who are living faithfully before God.In the first eight chapters, Bennett tells his coming out story at age 14, and conversion to Christianity story at 19. Though the subtitle of the book is: “The Unexpected Story of a Gay Activist Discovering Jesus,” I am not quite sure how much history a person can accrue as a “gay activist” and one who “was heavily involved in the gay rights movement” (p. 214) in one or two short years. Many reviews accentuate the “gay activist to celibate Christian” angle. We Christians love those bad to good stories, even when a bit of exaggeration is imbued.Understandably, when Bennett becomes a Christian, he begins to look at what the Bible says about homsexuality. He concludes: “Scripture is clear that homosexual acts are sinful. (p. 210) He addresses his theological beliefs in an appendix at the books’ end, asking “So what did I discover the Bible really says about homosexuality?” (p. 239) Referring to Romans 1, Bennett calls it “Paul's famous text on homosexuality.” (p. 225)I need to step back here a bit to lay some historical groundwork about when and how the word “homosexual” got into the Bible for the first time, and eventually, in Romans 1.Christian theology about sexuality in general, and with respect to gay people in particular is quite a new concept. Christians had widely avoided discussing sexuality at all until the 1970s. And there was certainly no theology about homosexuality coming from the conservative church during that time.Further, did you realize the first usage of the word “homosexual” in the Bible was in the Revised Standard Version in 1946 where it appeared in 1 Cor. 6: 9-10? Before the RSV was published, throughout history that Corinthians text had been interpreted and understood as a situation in which a socially more powerful and/or older man imposed exploitative, abusive penetrative sex on a boy, or on a subservient person.During the RSV translation process of Corinthians in the 1930s and early 1940s, the team decided to join two Greek words—malakoi and arsenokoitai—into one word “homosexual” for ease in understanding. The team had been tasked to update the language of the popular King James, the ASV, and the ESV to more modern English. For the most part, until then, the two Greek words had been a variation on “effeminate” (one who takes the sexual penetrated role of a woman) and “sodomite” (one who penetrates another person, typically with excessive lust and with no intent to procreate). Even in the 1930s, the word “homosexual” carried a different meaning and implication than it does today. Then, homosexuality was wrongly considered a mental illness; not a moral issue, but a pathological one. It’s even more obvious that the word homosexual as we understand it today (one who is emotionally, romantically, and sexually attracted to the same sex) is a poor conjoining and translation of two words that throughout history had referred to exploitative sex.The placement of the word “homosexual” in Corinthians went relatively unnoticed for the next 30 years. Historical denominational journals, pastoral counseling magazines, and Christian books reflect this. There was simply no discussion taking places that connected morality and sin to homosexuality using 1 Corinthians. (This is all part of the historical work I am now doing.)Then in the 1971 The Living Bible paraphrase, the words “homosexual/homosexuality” were introduced in six more places in the Bible for the first time (Leviticus twice, Deuteronomy, 1 Kings, Romans (inferred) and 1 Timothy). Surprising, isn’t it? Still, there was no theology created around homosexuality. The Christian church was not in the fix-the-gays business. The translation notes on this Bible indicate the translations, just as had happened in the RSV, were cultural decisions, not theological ones. So, this “famous” passage that Paul wrote on homosexuality, has only been famously about homosexuality since 1971.Back to Bennett’s theology. “For non-Jews, such as those addressed by Paul, it (same-sex relationships) was an obvious issue since every possible kind of sexual expression was well-known in cities like Corinth and Rome, (there is a popular belief just now that the ancients didn't know about lifelong same-sex relationships, but this is easily refuted by the evidence both literary and archaeological.)” (p. 243) “While there is a general understanding of homosexual acts in the broader Greco-Roman literature of the time as predominantly virile or explicated expressions of power over another, many counterexamples of loving gay romances and gay love poetry that would echo and resemble a gay marriage also existed, including the Greek traditions of writing on homoerotic love.” (p. 244) No, no, no!Every example of same-sex sex in ancient cultures and literature had at its center a profound age and/or power differential. Paul was NOT referring to LGBTQ relationships as we know them today. The history of the understanding of the progression of human sexuality when it comes to heterosexuality and homosexuality is a fascinating one, and the story of it only began at the end of the 19th century. What Paul witnessed and wrote about was a combination of abusive, excessive and lustful sex where one male penetrated another male who took the submissive sexual role of a female, or the feminine position. Why are some people homosexual and others heterosexual? Even medical and psychological experts don’t know why yet, but they do agree that human sexuality exists naturally along a spectrum from heterosexuality to homosexuality. Bennett however goes to the Bible for the explanation, “Same-sex desire, like other desires that find root in The Fall, is part of the reality of the broken creation. Same-sex practice was understood by Paul implicitly as a normal part of fallen humanity. (p. 243) And, “Same-sex erotic desires are part of our fallen humanity. They are similar to broken heterosexual desires in that there and can never be righteously expressed in the covenant of marriage.” (p. 250) “We have all been impacted by the Fall.” (p. 212)The Fall and Genesis are frequently cited by conservatives as substantiation to maintain strict gender binaries in marriage. These same binaries are often used to stigmatized transgender people. Why are there LGBTQ people?—“because of fallen humanity, and The Fall.”I object to this non-scientific assumption. First, there is no list of “things” that are a result of The Fall. What we cannot explain with the Bible is “because of The Fall.” I don’t use Genesis or the Bible as a science book, or as a template dictating a limited heteronormative binary of human sexuality, and still, I am a Christian, one who refuses to abuse Scripture and use unsubstantiated interpretations created by others to marginalize groups of people that are not like me.To be a faithful Jesus-following Christian, it seems, we are forced to choose between two alternatives -- either choose faith and literal reading of the Bible in intellectual exile, or be intellectually curious and honest and abandon your faith. I choose the middle ground. Incorporating Scripture and science does not diminish my respect for and submission to God’s authority. I can both value the creation story as a different style and intention in writing than say, the New Testament letters and gospels.I remain safe from a threatened slippery slope toward unbelief in Jesus while using my intellect alongside the Genesis 1 texts to establish a more realistic yet still God-honoring view of human sexuality that also is reflective of what I witness in the lives of LGBTQ people before me and cognizant of the history of the progression of understanding human sexuality. After his conversion experience at age 19, Bennett wondered if, as a gay man, same-sex marriage might be available to him in the future and asks, “ Could I live out my Christianity as a partner in a gay, sexually active marriage, or was that in conflict with my newfound faith?” (p. 87) Because I know hundreds of married same-sex Christian couples, I actually screamed out “Yes!” as I was reading the book. But, this is not what the author concludes for himself. At one point, Bennett discusses the idea that the church has made “marriage a romantic idolatry.” (p. 133) I am seeing this line of thinking pop up more frequently lately in the gay celibate/same-sex attracted celibate niche. By yanking the desire for marriage down just a smidge, the distance between the loneliness of being single and marriage decreases. It is just a pattern I am noticing.Let’s let the LGBTQ Christian community think marriage is not all that wonderful so they won’t miss it so much. And then, let’s tell them this time of celibacy is their shining moment to use all that spare time to serve God and His people. Do you really imagine this is a Balm of Gilead to lonely, must-be-single-and-celibate LGBTQ Christians each day, night, holiday? Cheer up, “Compared with eternity, homosexuality is a momentary desire. It will soon pass away with God's new creation in Jesus Christ this goes with all other broken desires.” (p. 229) Yay!Bennett shares his views on celibacy: “Celibacy is neither an easy gift nor repressive burden. It is an opportunity, not that different from marriage, to trust in God's capacity to provide for our needs for intimacy, forsaking all others.” (p. 166)What might an LGBTQ same-sex married couple do if they become Christians and then find themselves living contrary to what many conservative Christians, including Bennett apparently, think God would have them do? Bennett writes, “For those in gay relationships or marriages who bravely repent of sexual sin, the solution is anything but simple. It takes time, and many answers are going to be messy. Gay couples often have children and become a family unit. What is their call? Easy answers break down very quickly without the Spirit's leading and discernment.” (p. 181) Several years ago, John Piper wrote an article responding the this situation. He wrote that the couple needed to walk slowly through a divorce and create a child sharing arrangement. That Bennett would even dip a tiny toe in those waters is horrifying. Can you be gay and Christian? Yes, says Bennett. But the line he has drawn for himself and suggests for others is that one cannot be in a romantic/sexual relationship, and certainly not a same-sex marriage. These decisions took him time to resolve: “It took me three years before I was willing to submit to God's clear teaching in Scripture.” (p. 200) “By definition, this new identity cannot live the old way. We must repent and put away the old identity. In a gay person's case, the old identity is defined by same-sex desire. While celibacy and identifying as gay are in the some sense compatible, staying in a sexually active relationship cannot be compatible with fully embracing a Christian identity. God's Word reveals that we are called to die to our sinful nature and to pursue holiness, by the power of the spirit. (p. 181) Then adding a commonly overused used trope, “The opposite homosexuality is not heterosexuality. It is holiness.” (p. 213) I have often wondered what the opposite of heterosexuality is.Obviously, there are other Christian perspectives which support same-sex marriage. Much has been written about the sacredness and Christian possibility for blessing and conducting same-sex marriages. I've written an extensive chapter in my own book. I would also challenge those who do not endorse Christian same-sex marriage to perhaps go to my blog (which I cannot link here) and read a series I wrote linked under “MARRIAGE.” I offer thoughtful and scriptural reasoning supporting same-sex marriage. Churches that do not allow same-sex marriages are missing out on what many of us know to be true. The witness, gifts, and richness that LGBTQ couples and their families bring to community and churches is apparent. You may well be missing out!Another common recurring theme in gay celibate/same-sex attracted celibate Christian books is a suggestion of how the church is to “comfort” those on whom we/our interpretation of the Bible imposes mandatory celibacy and singleness. Bennett, in keeping with his peers, touches on it as well. Christian families should include the single/celibate people of the church within their own families in order to create a family for them. Bennett suggests the church return to the model depicted in the Book of Acts. (p. 231) “It means we Christians must open up our private lives and welcome others into a kind of spiritual families and intimate communities we see demonstrated in the Book of Acts in the early church.’ (p. 232) This is a quite altruistic view, and where is the biblical model for couples taking in the church celibate? My goodness, many of us struggle to love the stranger and the immigrant well, and that directive is in the Bible.A few more things about the book that irritated me while reading. Dozens of times, Bennett writes an exact recounting of conversations with God, or the Holy Spirit. It comes off as somewhat manufactured.Along the same lines, narcissism bugs me. Bennett’s mention of “Oxford” forty-four times in the book was excessive. But again, it does fill our need for the Cinderella stories we so crave—smart gay activist becomes Christian. It is a bit overdone.I struggled between giving Bennett two or three stars. Compared to many books in this genre, Bennett is far more gracious and inclusive of LGBTQ Christians, than say, Christopher Yuan. I do however give great consideration in reviews as to how this book might be used against people. I wonder, would I want a young LGBTQ Christian who is struggling to figure out where they fit into the intersection of faith with sexual orientation and gender identity to read this book? No, I would not.I do not think Bennett has done the harder work around the context and history of the same-sex verses in the Bible, even though he did go to Oxford. Unfortunately, I think he’s taken the easy route, which for me as a researcher, I find disappointing that a scholar would not do the work required. It has become very apparent to me, that when people dig in and do the hard work, they typically come out affirming.Bennett recently mentioned that his book “can’t be weaponised for harm.” (Twitter, 11/22/18) Everyone gets to tell their personal stories and testimonies. However, when flawed theology is used as a “clear” foundation for one’s insights and given advice, the book will not be beneficial to the person that once again I am considering— that young LGBTQ Christian who is struggling to figure out where they fit into the intersection of faith with sexual orientation and gender identity.Conservative leaders, parents of LGBTQ children, well-meaning friends WILL all “lovingly” hand this book to that same young LGBTQ Christian who is struggling to figure out where they fit into the intersection of faith with sexual orientation and gender identity. Bennett with his life of celibacy will be strongly suggested as the role model. And into a prison that young LGBTQ person will walk. This book is not just a story. Christopher Yuan’s “Out of a Far Country” and Rosaria Butterfield’s “Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert” are “just” their stories of conversation to Christianity and their “leaving homosexuality” narratives. Have those books been weaponized? Oh my goodness, yes, they have.If Bennett is really serious about not wanting his book to have damaging effects, he needs to be intensely cautious over the next few years. He will be placed on stages and made to be the poster boy the church so desperately needs to continue its control over LGBTQ Christians. People will get hurt, discouraged, and yes, may even leave the faith because they cannot and do not believe in this version of restrictive, inaccurate theology any longer. While I was reading this book, I kept thinking of my friend Liam Webb who lives in Newtown, near Sydney, Australia, where David lived at one time. I’ve walked those Newtown streets with Liam and sat over yummy meals having deeply spiritual conversations. Liam too came from a family with no religious base. But then, God got a hold of him. Liam leads Bible studies, is involved in worship and drama at his church, and knows the intricacies and context of the verses that have been used to enslave LGBTQ Christians. He is also about Bennett’s age, and he is single and celibate. But, he is waiting for the right partner and husband that God will bring him in time.Liam is the person I would love to put up on stages in front of churches. I trust him. He knows the Bible very well. He is a lovely man. His messages and advice will not harm that young LGBTQ Christian who is struggling to figure out where they fit into the intersection of faith with sexual orientation and gender identity. He would love that person I care so deeply about to the Kingdom, and to freedom.I wish two and a half stars were an optional rating; I would give it. Read this book if you want to hear Bennett’s story. But don’t read it for reliable theology or life-giving advice. Start with Justin Lee’s book “Torn” instead.

This book is a story about one man's journey wrestling with faith and sexuality. David's experience in the LGBT+ community and the Christian faith qualify him to talk about this subject with all respect. He has done the difficult work in wrestling with what seem irreconcilable to most and come out being able to celebrate what God has done in his life.David has some challenging things to say to The Church, and it will make many uncomfortable to hear, yet he maintains the traditional sexual ethic, so the Church can't accuse him. He has a story that may be challenging for the LGBT+ community to hear as well, but should listen to because he still walks (present tense) in their shoes. The two things I found most valuable from the book were (1) that Jesus is patient. Many Christians would be uncomfortable with the fact that David was still in a gay relationship for a time after coming to know Jesus and committing to following him, but it's obvious through David's testimony that Jesus taught David over time, was patient with David, and loved him through it all. And (2) that romance of ALL types is idolized in our culture (maybe humanity in general) and we have turned to worship the creation (gay relationships, heterosexual marriage, etc.) rather than be directed to worship the Creator. We're all at fault here. There's simply too much to unpack here in a review, and you should really buy yourself a copy. It's an intriguing book and not a dull or difficult read. This is a current issue that everybody needs grace to talk about with others. David lends us the grace he has received through his writing.

I was surprised by the extent to which David opened up about his journey with homosexuality, activism, the marriage question, romantic drama, and more. This book is predominantly biographical, rather than dousing the reader in theological terminology - which with his qualifications David could easily do if he wanted! I think this is just what we needed in this book. To hear David's voice and the ups and downs of his journey toward celibacy through relationship with God. Yes, there are big theological questions and grapplings, but David handles these lovingly in the same way that certain people lovingly shared God's truth with him and impacted him. Of course, David does spell out his theology on marriage and sex, mainly towards the end of the book, though the questions are raised and answered throughout the retelling of his journey. As a cis hetero reader, I found his approach really helpful for growing my empathy and understanding for the cross that LGBTQI+ people bear, Christian and otherwise. Regardless of your sexual orientation or your views on sexuality, marriage, etc., pick up this book if you believe all LGBTQI+ stories deserve to be heard and respected. You will find deep respect for David whether or not you ultimately take up his views for consideration. At the end of the day, his message is to walk closely with God, listen to, and obey him, rather than being pushed about by church or society.
