I absolutely love these simple flash cards! On one side is the state on the other is the capitol. The sides that have the states are colored with the state itself show in white, with the location of the capitol marked by a dot, just like shown on a map. The sides that hold the capitol are white, with the state once again shown, but in color. The cards are not see through, so when you hold them up neither side is visible from the opposite. In other words, you can drill from the capitol side, without the state showing through and vice versa. Also included are 36 country cards that have their capitol cities listed, including the US. These are easily sorted, because the country side is black as opposed to the states which are bright colors. I love these. They are perfect for my 5 year old. (And older kids)

For about 5 minutes, I thought about making my own. I mean really, with Pinterest, all these "crafty" websites, what "good" mom wouldn't make her little Einstein some flashcards right? Um, me! Ain't nobody got time for that. I got through about 2 states before I realized that I could be doing 25 other things in my house that really needed done and by these on Amazon for way cheaper and that look like the actual State they were supposed to look like. Not only that, These come with countries of the world as well. The States are easy to sort out to memorize, as they are in colors like pinks and orange, where the countries are black and white. This particular set of flash cards only have the State on one side and the Capital on the other with a dot that shows where in the State the Capital is located, so if you want more info, you have to purchase other cards. This was enough for us. I am happy.

These are great! I like how the state is shown in relation to its location in the country as well. And the smaller included set of national capitals was a nice bonus. I am using these for a game with an older friend. She laughs that it helps keep her mind sharp, and we have laughed a lot about the state capitals we've forgotten. I got two sets--one for me and one for her. I can't wait to show her how wonderful they are. Her eyesight is weaker, so the larger print is effective. Great buy and great quality.

These are wonderful cards! Very sturdy, colorful and helpful. On one side you have the state and on the other side you have the capital - therefore, you can quiz yourself both ways. I love that on the state side, there is a picture of the entire U.S., with the state on the card shaded so you can familiarize yourself with where the state is within the country. As an added bonus, there are several countries and their capitals included in the pack! My only complaint (and this is very small) is that the cards are larger than I would like -- they aren't huge, but I wish they were more like playing card size for portability purposes.

These are well printed and suit a couple of purposes. If they match your needs, they're a good choice.We had a middle-schooler facing a test on all 50 states and their capitals, who also needed to identify the states by location on a map. No other data was being asked (like state nickname etc.) so we needed a plain interface like these cards have.You can see from the box cover that one side of each card shows where a state sits in the main continental US map (sorry, Alaska and Hawaii -- you have to sit in the margin again!) The other side shows the state capital and its location within the state.With a two-sided card there is only so much the designer can do, and I discovered that to quiz a student about what state is being shown by the map location, it is necessary to hide the state name (at the bottom of the card) with a finger or two while holding the card up. If you wanted to get carried away I suppose you could make a card holder that would hide the bottom inch or so, to do the same thing. Anyway, not counting the occasional slipped finger (or very long state name), this plan worked.You can of course do the quiz in reverse, showing the capital side and asking for the state name. Since the capital side of the card also shows the state shape, it is hard to quiz just on the capitals by name -- the state outline is sort of a hint, you might say.You can figure most of this out for yourself, I am just explaining what happened when we actually tried to use these to test the knowledge in multiple ways. The cards work primarily for matching capitals and state names. Recognizing shapes, or memorizing capitals without a visual prompt, requires slight adaptations as described here.Somebody else complained about the box being pre-opened. The box design is kind of weird and there are some flaps that are hot glued together, that come apart easily when you try to get the cards out. You end up with a sort of floppy thing that doesn't really hold the cards very well. That is probably what happened for that one customer, but I do not know why they concluded that the box had been opened or tampered with. It's just an odd packaging approach.The first time through the deck, this kid was doing so well, I felt I had just wasted $4! But the cards got pulled out later and re-used without any adult prompting, so I guess they were appealing to read and handle. Being able to shuffle the order is nice, compared to reading from a list on paper. if you have multiple users (big family or lots of friends) you will probably get more value from the set, and they are sturdy enough to last for a while -- if you can get them to stay in the box between uses.We did not use the country cards; they're well made but it seems odd to arbitrarily choose a couple dozen countries, out of the hundreds on earth, to include. It would seem to make more sense to have separate sets by continent, or something along those lines. Since this set is about the USA, I think it good that US territories are included, even though we did not need them.

Perfect, exactly what I was looking for and makes learning fun! I have my daughter pick 3 a day to memorize so she doesn't get overloaded with too much info. since she has other subjects to study as well.

My daughter had to learn all the state capitals for school. This was the perfect help. There are cards with all the states and their capitals and countries and their capitals. Good quality and very helpful. I liked that there were 6 different background colors for the state cards. This gave an easy way to separate them ("Today I'm going to work on the red ones.").

I got these for my daughter because I think it is sad our school district does not teach states and captials until 5th grade. She is in 2nd grade and is a good reader and these work great. They are also very sturdy compared to other sets I have seen.Besides the states, the set comes with country cards. The countries are actually a bit difficult, with African, Middle Eastern and South American countries, good challenge for adults as well as a good thing for your kids to be learning too!

I have been a fan of George Geary for close to 20 years and have taken classes from him, traveled to France, Scottsdale, New Orleans and taken many other day trips he has hosted because he is a story teller, history buff and one of the most entertaining and likeable people I've ever met. In his newest book, L.A.'s Legendary Restaurants, he takes his love of history to a new level. Growing up in Long Beach, CA, in 1947, I had heard of many of the places he writes about in his book. My parents went dancing at the Palladium, we ate lunch at Bullocks Wilshire tea room,and the Coconut Grove was our "grown up" venture for date night graduation. The list goes on and on. To have all of the pictures and history in one book takes me back so many years and just makes me smile. I have all of George's other books (all cook books) that are east to duplicate (mostly) with unfailing results. They elicit rave reviews and make me feel like a seasoned baker! Bravo George. This is such a delightful addition to your repertoire!

I enjoyed all of the "inside info" about various Hollywood celebrities. Capturing these folks while dining really added significance to their movie related roles.The recipes are fantastic. I have made the some of the famous salad dressings and they are easy to make and provide some new flavors I have not experienced.The history of these famous restaurants is very interesting. I can remember some of these restaurants when they were flourishing and it was a very special treat to dine in any of them.

This is a gorgeous book. Beautifully crafted and well-written. I've been in LaLaLand all my life, and enjoyed not only the memories of places long gone, but many of which I'd had the opportunity to enjoy in their heydays. Historically, it's fascinating, and what a treat that so many recipes are included. I've given it as a gift to three other folks now, and will again.

An absolutely joy to read. So many great recpies, and so many great stories about the restaurants and the owners/chefs and patrons who visited. Also, great pictures. I would recommend to anyone who loves food, history, and restaurants of Los Angeles.

It left out many of the restaurants that made the area so famous. It was disappointing.

My third copy—gave two as gifts because the reviews, recipes, photos of places I knew and loved make for a great book.

Right product, good price, received quickly.

Fabulous book with great retro recipes and excellent period photos. What a treasure.

I've read both the books Clint Hill wrote about his experiences in Jackie Kennedy's service detail. JFK's assassination impacted this man to the core and the regrets and what-ifs haunted him throughout his life. I also believe he loved Jackie Kennedy, if not in a romantic sense, in the deepest form of friendship. He couldn't bring himself to contact her after her service detail was over, not even when he heard of her cancer. He felt memories of him would transport her back to the Dallas and the trauma. I found his account respectful and fascinating, as he recalls the specifics of this tragic time in our history. If only there had never been a need for this book. President Kennedy was assassinated 16 years before I was born, but he will always be my favorite President.

Excellent book from someone who was actually there, and had to live through the horror and sorrow of that weekend first hand. He tells the story not just as the professional that he was and still is, but also as one who's humanity and feelings show through, in the book. I can not begin to imagine how bad it was for him from the last shot, through the rest of the weekend trying to both protect an comfort Jackie & the kids afterwords. But yet he does so with dignity and grace matched only by Jackie herself. Great book, I recommend it to all.

I read this book tonight, November 22, 2013.I cried at the passages you so poignantly described with dignity and grief. I relived those days of my personal sorrow tonight.Our beloved President's death shattered my generations hopes and visions. Such promise of another re-election in 1964. Another four years of having him lead our country out of the Vietnam War, just as he led us and saved us from a nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis. I was a young teacher in Berlin, Germany during those years. I saw the grief and shared the sorrow with the Berliners who loved him as I did.During that time I was unable to hear the details you wrote about the assassination. I am grateful that you provided those details for me 50 years later.The memories of those 5 days are as vivid for me today as they were in 1963. The sadness lives in my heart as it does in yours Clint. Bless you for your courage and dedication and for writing this book and sharing your memories for all of us to read. It helped me and I know it will help others who share your grief and loss. Loss of a man who gave us such hope for our future. With his death a whole generation died with him. The war in Vietnam raged on under LBJ and Nixon. Our country's dignity suffered after Watergate and a President's impeachment. Will our nation ever have another leader like President Kennedy? I'm 74 years old now. Perhaps I will live to see that torch glow once again and give my generation that hope we felt 50 tears* ago.*years not tears (more like thousands of tears not 50)

Anyone with an interest in the JFK assassination should read this book. It's a very easy read due to the fact that nearly every page has a photograph. It took me about 3 days to read through it, I didn't want to put it down! There were more than a few instances where tears were brought to my eyes. There are so many books on this topic but this one you can be sure is factual. Mr. Hill talks about conversations with the President on their way to Dallas, he talks about how Mrs. Kennedy was worried about what would happen to Mr. Hill now that the President was dead, intimate details of the funeral and much more.

Thanks so much for an incredibly poignant book covering those terrible days. I get asked all of the time about how many shots I heard. There were three that I heard. I was about 150 feet behind the Kennedy limo and after the first shot I thought it came from my right which would have been the Texas School Book Depository area. The shots made such echos bouncing off all the buildings that I'm sure that's why other people thought they came from different directions and that there may have been more than three.But, to the book, kudos and thank you for the firsthand insight to the events of those days.If you're a JFK Assassination researcher or just have interest in it as apparently many people still do then do yourself a favor and read Mr. Hill's book. Thanks for a good read without having to muddle through all the conspiracy hoopla etc.

I am glad Mr. Hill has recounted his memories of those fateful days in 1963 as only he could. He was a first responder and member of the presidential "inner circle". I can't imagine the guilt he has carried around for all these years thinking there could have been something else he could have done that day. There were forces at work that day that we still may not fully understand that changed US history. He was an eyewitness and though, painful, I am glad he has entered his account into the history books. I would recommend this book to others.
