Love this book! Read it a few times after having read Mans Search for Meaning many times. It is life changing stuff - and Fabry successfully helps to make some of the good Doctor's ideas more accessible.

Who are we called to be and what are we called to do so that our unique and universal "responsibleness" to what our context asks of us, evokes ever new meaning?Mercifully, we will never have another holocaust. Yet, in truth, the face of human decimation, the fear of another's heritage and belief, the dilemmas of what force can put down illegitimate power without surrendering what we determine to give power to, remain.Fabry's penetrating insight into a work (Frankl's) that is situated in history, is that history impels us to perennially re-examine all the dimensions of what has heretofore held meaning. It is our nature to seek our unique and collective place in this universal evolution."Most people want to be free, unique, and self-reliant; but most of all they want to be useful, to know for whom or for what they live, work, suffer, and die." (p. xix)Signs of new meanings are visible: questioning what about mental health may well lie outside standard definition (and in our nature); interfaith dialogue that is willing to release singular attachment to who/what God is, what truth is; restraint in declaring military force even as such acknowledges this also bears unacceptable human cost. In recognizing these signs of deep shift in our time of becoming, there is gratitude for a man and his followers whose work, even after almost 70 years, touches and challenges us to stay awake.Even so, I sense Fabry leaves open for our and future generations continuing questions which are relevant to the depth of responsibleness we are called to now: - Are we seeded into the divine and have transcendent experience of this dimension of our nature, as Fabry suggests, or is the divine seeded into us such that we are naturally driven and called? Not to falsely dichotomize the breathing movement into being that Fabry explains, but conflicts over the nature of source and conscience continues to stoke strife and meaningless in our positioning with one another.Clearly the matter of free will and determinism is not a new matter; there remains the dilemma of whether there is an accountability to history that transcends our will to act toward it. Will history move us forward in spite of our fears, our responses? If divine nature is seeded already into our everyday human dimension, we may be less the driver of our search for meaning and more the vessel through which the meaning of our existence manifests. - As I put the book down, I had a second and similar thought: If the source of the spiritual voice is to be uniquely and universally explored (as I too believe), imbued into our nature, is the purpose of our search to transcend psychological attitudes and assumptions that interfere, or is the purpose to open up those ways of perceiving, to see the (innocent; naive) impulse toward truth-seeking therein? This has much to say about how we SEE and meet one another - whether a therapist sitting across from a client, a political enemy facing his perceived adversary, a lover making room for the other to know their ultimate source of attachment and meaning.Fabry would welcome these reflections and perhaps even clarify his own meanings. McLafferty has astutely brought the book to our attention so we can, once again, examine who we are and why we are here, in 2014.

My only complaint about the book is that Joseph Fabry seldom shows his great sense of humor.April Fool, indeed, who barely escaped death in a Concentration Camp..A Favorite quote from Goethe:"Life is too serious to be taken seriously."I had the good fortune to have Joseph Fabry as a friend and church member in California.Joe was one of several dozen refugees who fled from Hitler and joined UU Churches in America.He found a job helping to build Liberty Ships in Richmond, California.Then was an editor for the University of California.With Max Knight he wrote humorous columns and books.He told their story in a book, ONE AND ONE MAKE THREE.Joe, with his friend, Viktor Frankl, founded the Institute of Logotheraphy.Too bad none of these refugees are given biographical postings either byTHE UU HISTORICAL SOCIETY or by THE HARVARD SQUARE LIBRARY.Joe Fabry was even forgotten by Beacon Press.When I wrote asking about the book of his they had published 30 years ago,They wrote back that they had no record of ever publishing a book by him.Tonight, I will drink a toast to Joe,Who loved Goethe, Humanity, Sex, and told of his childhood in Vienna whereA friend used to take him to play at "Uncle Sigmund's House."Thank you, Joseph Fabry, my favorite APRIL FOOL.
