Lots of name dropping, but they lived the stories and the name dropping probably helped them recall the heroes.An era I doubt we will see again, strong men, expert builders, who killed stray enemies at the same time they built massive ports and massive air bases and tank farms and warehouse complexes in the middle of isolated jungle islands, and built them quicker than anything has been built before or since
The author explains the instrumental part the Seabees played in winning WWII. Without their expertise and skill the war would have lasted much longer. They volunteered, leaving jobs in the States, to supply our troops with every conceivable thing they needed; food, oil, piers, airstrips, clothing, tents, et. al. while being bombed and strafed. They're all heroes.
This is a very unapologetically positive about America and how our system is better than any other. This is a refreshing difference to our current politically correct and self despising narratives. He touts how good the Sea Bee's (CB's) are, and how much better they are than even the Army and Marines. It's interesting that the CB's were formed after the start of the war. The CB's were responsible for creating "Roads" across the Pacific so that the Navy would have resupply and repair facilities to support them during the war.Now that China is creating the conditions that will probably lead to another Pacific naval war, we'll need this type of man again. We'll also need their drive and optimism if we are to win.
I have always admired he Seabees. Loved reading their history and how they originated after Pearl Harbor. Loved reading how they opened the roads in the PTO and the ETO. They never get the credit that they deserve for their ingenuity, their grit, and their can-do attitude.A book that should be read by all. I highly recommend it.Roy Green
For those folks who enjoy stories based on actual organizations active in World War II, you should find this one a very interesting read. Without the Sea Bees (construction battalion ) and their bravery and tenacity, it would have taken us much longer to win through to the end of WWII.
This book is an excellent look at the birth of a sorely needed unit. As a Marine of 22 years, I can attest to the Seabees being a unit of trained professional volunteers with a fightig spirit and deep desire to get the job done. I have worked with the Seabees on numerous occasions and they are always ready, willing and able to take on any job. I have the utmost respect for this exceptional unit.
A well written essay of the need and development of the combat construction element of the Navy. The narrative style does not depend on hype to demonstrate the heroic actions and attitude of focused “civilians†accomplishing necessary objectives with selfless regard for protocol. A good read.
Very informative iteration of the history of the Seabee’s in the South Pacific during World War 2.A bit long through some of the lists of men, their rank and hometowns. However I did appreciate the fact that all were given credit for their time and efforts.
