I find it rather telling of how much I Enjoyed a book that, when I've recently read it, but then cannot remember certain details about it, that fast, ....I do remember something of the basic story, message and characters. I can't remember any of their names. As with several reviewers, I Enjoyed the friendship between the black woman and the white woman. I Enjoyed that the story, rather than the romance, was the focus. Sometimes these books focus so much on the man and the woman "wanting" each other and the romantic tension that other, very important , relationships are lost in the shuffle. I also Enjoyed the fact that, even in that romance, it was depicted differently, almost an arranged marriage between strangers that became more. The man's commitment to loving her was very nice too, instead of just a focus on intense attraction, as, again, is common. However, I felt many of the characters, even the primary ones, weren't fully fleshed out, like a black and white drawing that a child has only colored partway. Incomplete. I could see some scenes and people well but others seemed half-formed. The protagonist herself was ok but her backstory seemed vague, her raison d'etre not quite clearly explained. The author's depiction of her growth in general and as a wife, as she found strength in hardship, was good. The civil war relationships also seemed too pat, some were sweet, nice, I Enjoyed them, but doubt they were this uncomplicated. The idea of the Whistlewalk itself, and the lessons taught by this were well done. I was a little confused at first by the title and you have to read a little ways before you get to this, so be patient, I believe the author did a good job there. All in all, 3 stars, not meant to be critical. The writing style was decent despite the above critique. I do think the ending was a little too good to be true. But ok, sweet. One comment: I find it intriguing that most Christian historical romances of this era seem to laud the people of the south for their ideology and commitment to states rights, as though there was something noble there. I firmly believe slavery is abhorrent and the practice untenable. This novel was better than most in addressing this but the "nobility" idea still seems to slither somewhere below the surface. I don't think this was the author's intention in this particular novel but..... just saying.

I love historicals & this one which is about the beginning of the Civil War is well written. But this story is mainly about a young girl who marries but not too long after her husband would have to enlist. Instead being the little southern lady her mother expects her to be, she becomes who and what she wants to be - mainly to love others including the slaves who she asked to remain and work for their own living as they all work together.- - - Would a southern belle be like her - yes, I have read of things similar to this.I got the book this morning and began reading it - I could not put it down - expect to eat - This is a well written story with so much going on.

A wonderful story of a plantation in Mississippi in the late 1800's. Lydia married Charles the owner of Ironwood Plantation. She becomes a strong and powerful women when Charles leaves to fight in the Civil War that tears our nation apart.Lydia is shopping in town when she sees a man mistreating slaves that are all tied together in the street. Lydia being a strong willed person drops her packages and runs into the street and yells at the man. She buys the young slave, Ruth who had alway been a field hand. Lydia takes ber home and puts her in the Big House to work.A wonderful story of two women during the 1800's finding their way in life. The plot was well written with a good storyline having many twists and turns with mysteries thoughtout. All the characters were defined so well each one came alive. This is a book you can't put down. A wonderful Civil War Novel that you will not forget.

fantastic book. Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Difficult to put down. I liked this book because it showed conflicts with both the North and South and how each side suffered . It explained not everyone in the South owned slaves and mistreated them and how the North felt also. So many books place the entire blame on the South . Such a wonderful husband (unknown before the wedding) . Also described how the whites and blacks had to learn to live together and color did not make a difference. It also described how the women left behind had to take charge of the household and suffer as well as those who fought in the War. Well worth reading. Good writing. Clean and loving.

Loved the way the author entwined Lydia and Ruth's stories. The theme of the Whistle Walk was great, but the best part of all was the surprise at the end. Heartwarming. Love Ruth and Noah's love story as much as Lydia and Charles's. I wondered about why Lydia gave the Union captain her bedroom when she had the hidden spot in it, and the spot was never used or mentioned again. I also wondered if the woman she sees in her dreams will be explained in future books, perhaps the next one. The characters are well developed. I loved the way the author illustrated through Lydia it's not the size of a person that truly makes her strong, but what's within and faith. Lydia didn't seem to believe in God or faith much in the beginning, but she came to cling to it and prayer when her husband went to war. I love reading Civil War books that are clean reads so I really enjoyed this one. Too many of these types of books rely on sex scenes to sell them, but this one doesn't. Yet, the author uses love and passion without the sex for an entertaining read. Another thing about this book that makes it stand out is the multiple viewpoints. You not only get the hero and heroine's but also Ruth's. I enjoy stories with multiple viewpoints, layered with depth, and this one has all those things as well as beautiful, vivid description I also enjoy.Author of River Oaks Plantation & Romance Under the Oaks
