Great book for my little level 2 reader!We own the 3 books in the Dark, Dark Room series and my 7-year old daughter loves the stories. She thought it was really neat to get a book that contains similar stories that she could read to her parents instead of us reading them to her. I do have to help her sound out a couple of words here and there but she's been able to read this book pretty well on her own. I would say that it's between a level 2 and 3 on the reading scale. She does not think the stories are scary at all, but they (along with the illustrations) are fun. This book also tries to throw in a little humor. The book may not be great for kids under 5 or if your child scares easily, but I really don't see anything too scary in here-base your purchase decision off what your child generally enjoys reading.We got this just in time for Halloween and it has really been enjoyable to read with my daughter.

Our resident 6-year-old recently discovered that reading is not only something he has to master at school, but something he enjoys.The books he brings home from the school library are often non-fiction. He looks for imaginative fiction, but I think he finds much of the beginning readers fiction kind of sappy, with little action or humor."Ghosts!" provides a terrific alternative. The seven stories and poems are a little creepy, with a big dose of cheerful humor and funny illustrations.He is going to read one of the stories, "A Little Green Bottle," to his class. This is the first such class project and he is a little nervous. I noticed on his critique sheet that he marked the story "great" and wrote that he liked it because "it is so weird." Coming from a 6-year-old, that is high praise.

It's hard to find scary stories for first graders. I am a first grade teacher and my kids loved this book. It's scary, but also fun. Things like a child bully ghost haunting a classroom and a ghost cat. Great introduction to folktales genre for little ones. If my class earns enough points in the week, we have a campfire stories on Friday. I set up a fake campfire, and we eat s'mores and read ghost stories. Have read these tales and they love it!

I found some of the stories a little startling for my intended reader but overall the stories are appropriately spooky and ghastly as intended.

I remember these stories from when I was younger and my 5 yr old loves them too. Perfect little "scary" stories for the younger kids with great illustrations.

My four year old really likes witches and scary stories. The stories are old folks tales or some similar to Tales to tell in the Dark, but they are a little scary. Good introduction to scary stories though if your kid wants to start watching scary movies. Test the waters this way so you don't have to deal with nightmares!

Loved this book as a child, just ordered it for my two boys (5 and 6) they loved it too! These are fun ghost stories for the family!

I remember reading this as a kid and was excited for get it for my daughter. Fun, not scared, book.

This book is not for everyone. Michael Pollan does not leave out any details in building a small house in the woods. The book doesn't overwhelm you exactly; it beats you down until you nearly give up. If you don't surrender, and if you have any interest at all in learning how to do something you know nothing about, and if you care about doing something right, you need to read almost anything by Michael Pollan. I fell under his spell with his opening salvos in "The Omnivores Dilemma," a book that helped start a revolution in food quality and that leads to the corruption that begins with factory farming clear through sales and promotion excesses to the grocery stores and pretended government oversight. I don't think it is overblown to write that some Americans and possibly myself would be in a nursing home or six feet under except for Pollan. So if you are planning or just thinking about building something and want it to stand the test of time, read "A Place of My Own." Actually, you can learn a lot from Pollan whether you are going to build anything or not. There is a way of looking at things that may be in decline today but that can result in infinite value. Pollan can show you how to do this. Also, you can join me in wondering why he didn't show us a photo of the completed structure.

Pollan drives nails. Nice memoir of building a private writer's space.I do like his skewering of the modern and pos-modern architects. As he seems to have some especial scorn for Philip Johnson, I recall reading elsewhere that Johnson was notorious for never designing a window that didn't leak.And irony of ironies, Pollan found himself confronted with inadequate construction drawings of the windows, and an architect with no real idea of how to design an inward-opening awning window that didn't inherently leak. One thing that does stand out, from a perspective of years after the project was completed was that Mr. Pollan and his architect put a higher value on the visual and aural aesthetics of an uninsulated shingle roof than on the winter habitability of the workspace.

An interesting premise of the building a "writing shed" for the author. The details and thoughts that actually involved this part were fascinating and certainly well written. On the other hand, the loong wanders off into the obscurities of architectural philosophy were not for me.

I remember in high school hearing about the eccentricities of Walden and rolling my eyes. This book has helped me see why that book has held such a strong place in the zeitgeist... and yes, makes me want to build my own little place in the woods.I really appreciated how Pollan went into some of the architectural history and theory - although at one point I just wanted to shout at him to just get up off of his duff and DO something rather than reading about doing something! And then only a few paragraphs later, he made fun of himself for that very thing, and went and actually started with the doing. Pretty handy, that! Wish it always worked that way for me, the things I could do...The book really has 3 main characters - his architect friend/mentor, his contractor/mentor, and Pollan. The book spends an awful lot of time on the struggle between architects and contractors, and Pollan's place stuck between the two of them... and his gradual acquisition of knowledge and confidence, which allows him to make decisions outside of the blueprints.I read this book on audiobook, so it was solidly built out of imagination. I imagine that the book itself has drawings or illustrations - and see, even just looking at the cover shows me what the finished product looks like, and darn that little hut looks cute and snug! - which would help give it shape mentally... but actually that may have helped me a bit. I rewound and relistened in some parts to try to figure out what he meant when describing building details, and I don't know that I would have thought so hard about it if it had been diagrammed.That said, is this the Omnivore's Dilemma? Nope, not by a long shot. But if I had never read OD, I'd have given it 5 stars, so that's what I'm doing here. (maybe OD should get an imaginary 6th star, to make it fair to every other book?)This was just a really enjoyable book, and it's subtly altered how I look at buildings around me. Worth the reading, definitely.

This book will very much appeal to the DIY crowd because we've all faced the dilemmas that Mike does...from idea, to planning, tools and searching for competent advice and help. Self-effacing humor is Mike's key to the door to his 'place.' As an avid planner and builder in my spare time, I enjoyed all the foibles and fables that unfold as the plot becomes a place.

A terrific book. I loved it. I’m going to read everything by him.

Bought this for my 3 year olds birthday because she LOVES Moana and we have a Doc McStuffins Look & Find that she always wants to read. This is not a board book - the pages in the book are paper and can easily rip. I prefer the Look and Find books that have the hard/board book pages. They seem to hold up better. Also this is definitely a book for an older child like 5-8 as some of the pages were quite challenging for my 3 year old.

Maybe I'm disappointed because the movie was so beautiful I expected the book to reflect that. The colors seemed off, Maui was the color of chocolate sauce instead of a tan color(My phone camera makes it look better than it is), and Tamatoa wasn't very shiny. Some other illustrations lacked detail. The other look and find books I have are the "My first look and find" series, which may be the reason I didn't get what I expected. The Frozen one was very good.

It keeps my 22 month entertained, but the pages are way too thin for that age. She has ripped almost all the pages, and so the book is covered in scotch tape. I wish they made these books thinking that at that age and even older, kids rip things apart.

I bought this for my Moana obsessed daughter who happens to also be obsessed with her other look and find books. While she certainly likes the Moana theme, I think she is as underwhelmed as I am. There aren't as many pictures as I thought there would be and they are kind of boring to look at. I wouldn't say she is disappointed, but she never really showed much excitement past the cover either. I don't really have any objective complaints about the book itself.

Great book for any Moana lover. Not too easy and not too hard for kids of all ages. My 6 year old and 3 year old both enjoy this book.

This was purchased as a gift for a two year old. It will be a while before they can read it but the images capture their attention. Big size book is perfect for younger children. The colors are vibrant and eventually the child will learn to match the images as the book is intended but for now it helps the child identify the characters.

Love this! My 4 year old loves to search for things in books like these and he loves Moana! Great for a 4th birthday present!

My 4 year old Grand-daughter loves these books! You can also look for more items on the back pages like in other Disney Look & Find books if they get bored with them after being able to locate all other items too quickly when they get older.

Happy with this. Can teach new skills/ideas. But it is great for a quick daily activity to give your brain a break . Helps my daughter a lot when she is struggling with a certain art project. She gets a fun break and it opens her mind to go back and be productive.

I bought this as a gift for someone dear. She loved it! I looked through the book before I gave it too her and I was impressed with all the creative prompts.

So cool. Amazing quality, full of awesome ideas and space. I can't possibly love it more.

Honestly a super great idea executed poorly. You'd think this book would focus on principles of drawing but it is asking for use of watercolors every few pages and cut paper crafts... and the paper quality of the book cannot hold up to paints, glue or most type of artist markers. The pages wrinkle up, ink bleeds through and the back side of each pages is used for your next day... so if your colors bleed you next day or two are trashed. Lastly it's not as inspiring as I had hoped... its mark making, scribbling, and coloring on most days and the other days are flowers, trees, and leaves. Seems to be very repetitive. =/ a little upset I got both drawing and art books. They tend to repeat quite often.This would be great for small children or adults with no art background but for practice and insperation it's a bit disappointing. 3 stars for overall concept.
