I can only say great things about this book. Rueda Esquivel's thorough research and critical analysis of Chicana Lesbian literature from the 1970's to the year 2000 is breathtaking. Chapter after chapter, you will not only be fascinated, but you will be left with a wave of optimism for the future of Chicana and Chicano scholarship. If you are taking a course in Chicana feminisms, Chicana Lesbian literature, or want to read an analysis that posits gender and sexuality in relation to race and class, then you must pick up a copy of this book. This book requires you to either have some background in Chicana lesbian literature or can introduce you to the fabulous works being produced by Chicana lesbians.I hope that this is only the first step in critically engaging with Chicana lesbian literature. If, as Rueda Esquivel comments, you want to venture out of the traditional Moraga/Anzaldua Chicana lesbian canon then I recommend that you read tatiana de la tierra's, For the Hard Ones: A Lesbian Phenomenology, and or Myriam Gurba's, Dahlia Season.

Catriona Rueda Esquibel's book is a superb exploration of Chicana (and more broadly defined, Latina) lesbian literature and culture. She has an engaging style, and even incorporates some personal (autobiographical) anecdotes, giving us a good sense of who she is and why she cares so deeply about this topic. Readers will find in this book invaluable information and analysis. The author is to be commended for her important contribution to this field.

Not exactly a book I would typically picture myself reading, but when I discovered that someone had spent a lot of time tromping around one of the small nations in the world following a team that rarely even scores a goal, I figured I'd give it a shot. Mr. Connelly weaves a great tale through the culture and people of Liechtenstein as well as discussing how football interacts with the day to day life. Although most of the players he talks to have retired, it is interesting to read about them and then see where their careers took them.

A quirky combination of travelogue and soccer aficionado essay, this book succeeds and fails in fits and starts. The premise is fairly straightforward, Connelly decides to investigate the state of soccer in the nation that is the laughingstock of the sport in Europe: Liechtenstein. Basically, he's interested in the process by which a country of around 30,000 people fields a team to compete against sides loaded with international superstars in the quadrennial European and World Cup qualifying rounds. Armed with little more than a 50-year-old guidebook to the country and an enthusiastic email response from the country's tourism agency (er, agent), he sallies forth and installs himself in a guesthouse in the capital.Naturally, Connelly provides the requisite potted history the the wee place, which is delivered in the straightforward prose seasoned with quips and asides that has become the default style for travelogues ever since Bill Bryson started making the bestseller lists. Sandwiched between Austria and Switzerland, Liechtenstein has been a sleepy collection of valleys and villages until the last thirty or so years, which has seen it emerge as a financial services powerhouse with a phenomenal standard of living. In a relatively brief amount of time, Connelly manages to make a number of contacts who are all too willing to show him the splendors of Liechtenstein. Alas for him, this often involves strenuous hikes...As nice as everyone is, the real focus of the book is on football, and the national side's journey through the qualifying rounds for the 2002 World Cup. Best known as a doormat for opposing sides (one win against Azerbaijan, two draws against Ireland and Hungary, 35 losses and six goals scored in international play), they showed glimmers of improvement in the Euro 2000 qualifiers two years previously. For this campaign, the team features a mere six full professionals (most of whom play in the Swiss leagues), and the remainder are semi-professionals who play in the Liechtenstein league and hold day jobs. Given the superstardom accorded to national team members in other countries, it's rather amazing to read about the center midfielder who must choose between representing his country and pursuing his career in banking, or the sweeper who must miss a match due to his grape harvest! It makes for a very nice change of pace from the usual ego trips and gazillion dollar signing bonuses and salaries one normally associated with international soccer.Liechtenstein. is placed in a group with Spain, Israel, Bosnia, and Austria, and Connelly does his best to wring as much drama out of the matches as possible. Of course, the issue isn't whether they will qualify or not, but whether they will win a game! Unfortunately like many, if not all, books about soccer, the flow of a game just doesn't translated well to the page. Once he gets to the matches, one desperately wishes for videos of them to watch before turning back to the book. Because the national team is such small fry, Connolly's given all access to the players and the manager, which allows one a real insiders view. Unfortunately, they all tend to repeat the same cliches about what an honor it is to be able to represent their country, and how amazing it is to play against such superstars, and how they just want to do their best. After a while, this gets a bit tedious, but Connelly does his gamest to keep things interesting with such peripheral figures as Liechtenstein's number one sportswriter, who manages to write three pages of sports news every day! And toward the end, there's a mini-controversy revolving around the one true star, "Super" Mario Frick, a forward who manages to make it into the Italian Serie A. On the whole, it's maybe a touch overlong, but if you're looking for a book about soccer that isn't tainted by the big money that revolves around the game now, this is a good one. And I guarantee it'll make you root for all those little guys in international competition, I know I'll be looking for the Liechtenstein scores next qualifying round.

Though realistic about job demands and employment prospects, Wood is at times not as informative as necessary: for example, when she discusses applying to Cogswell Polytechnic College or the Culinary Institute of America, she fails to indicate how competitive admission really is. She does, however, give specific contact information and provide the reader with a number of money-earning ideas. Her casual tone will appeal to readers in their late teens and early twenties. I bought this book for my 22 year old sister. She's not a fan of school, but loves to learn new things. She's also completely undecided on a career or on her next move. In this economy, that's really a recipe for stagnation and frustration. So, I checked this book out of the library to preview it for her and loved it so much that I bought it. It details lots of options that one rarely hears about (working on a co-op, specific non-profits/NGO's to work with), as well as reviewing the more traditional non-college options (military, Americorp, etc). It's extremely casual in tone, non-threatening, up-beat, and very "Can-Do". It emphasizes non-college options that still provide you with a way to live (e.g., eat and have a roof over your head). It also provides specific websites and other resources for following up on its recommendations. I highly recommend this book for its innovation, variety, and it's enthusiastic embrace of "thinking outside the box." (And yes, my sister is in the process of reading it and has said that she loves it).

Found out students in several colleges are doing some of these ideas after they graduate,to get real world experience and savings.Good to read for someone who has had a complete turn around (hey,you can plan all you want,but life will happen anyways!) In life, has lessened abilities,but still does not want to drown in,or live life avoiding debt.

The book gives you things you can do besides college, for example, Americorps, Cruise ships, Military, teaching English in Japan etc. It also gives information on how to join and sometimes a description of what it's like to do it. Recommended by me for young adults and for people who are just looking for something to do. Love this book since many kids do not need to go to college to earn a degree only to find they can not get a job. Becoming a plumber, electrician, and many other careers can begin right out of high school especially if the high school offers training in blue collar careers. And...many of these jobs pay just as much, and sometimes more than the traditional 4 year college degree.

The UnCollege Alternative is a great resource for those students who are in college and questioning whether or not they should be there. Ms. Wood makes an excellent point early on in the book: would you just walk into a store and point at something and say "ring it up", regardless of the cost? The author states that when students go on to college without really thinking it through as to whether or not college is for them - they are saying "ring it up" possibly for a $80,000 education.What makes The UnCollege Alternative shine is the wide variety of potential career paths the author discusses, many of which can bring in significant incomes. She discusses all aspects of each career path: needed training, certification, potential income and job market, as well as providing a sort of "day in the life of" feel.I think often students just go to college not knowing what they want to study, just going because that's what they are "supposed" to do. I recommend this book for ALL high school and current college students. Even if you decide that college is the right track for you, at least you are educated in what some alternatives are. It is important to know just what's out there before you potentially spend four years of your life and tens of thousands of dollars.Another excellent book I recommend on a similar subject is "Taking Time Off" by Colin Hall and Ron Lieber.

Philip E. Tetlock is the Annenberg University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania and holds appointments in the psychology and political science departments and the Wharton School of Business. He and his wife, Barbara Mellers, are the co-leaders of the Good Judgment Project, a multi-year forecasting study. He is also the author of Expert Political Judgment and (with Aaron Belkin) Counterfactual Thought Experiments in World Politics.   Dan Gardner is a journalist and the author of Risk and Future Babble: Why Pundits are Hedgehogs and Foxes Know Best.

Super Forecasting: The Art and Science of Prediction by Philip E. Tetlock and Dan Gardner is a rather timely book about polls, statistics, politics, news, media, and more. This book delves into how the pollsters and surveys make their predictions and how they disseminate their findings to the public.The 2016 presidential election is one in which the pollsters seem to have royally screwed up. It seems that no major survey or poll predicted the outcome that occurred. This book sheds some insight into how so many seemingly scientific polls could have been wrong all at the same time.This book is written in a way that anybody can understand, no Master's degree in statistics or math needed. It was well-written and explains that forecasters are fallible too.This book also provides guidance on how statisticians and forecasters can get better results. This sort of 10 step program (there are 11 steps) can be applied to other issues in life as well. This book is also extensively annotated, with references at the end for those looking for more technical details.I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.

There are two kind of pop-science books; one deep and thoughtful based on years of research, one quick and dirty written by a ghost-writer. This book is of the latter kind. Tetlock wrote Expert Political Judgment: How Good Is It? How Can We Know? about a decade ago. That book was deep and thoughtful. I had expected his new book to be an update with ten more years of research and consulting. Sadly, I am greatly disappointed. The book could have been written totally without additional research input. It starts with a couple of chapters of the history of the standard controlled experiment. There is about 50 pages of real content in the 330 pages of the book.There is a lot of content directly lifted from the web (e.g. Fermi-forecasting, Auftragstaktik) - kind of Malcolm Gladwell style, some insight and some misinterpretation.The style is **extreme pop-science**. What do I mean with that? Far too many pages, plentiful descriptions of minute irrelevant details of individuals (so called human interest points - I guess that is what they teach in creative writing), never any figure or number (e.g. 67% is changed to two thirds), all difficult material removed or put in a footnote. And how come a book with two authors use the pronoun "I" all the time?The researcher has run a forecasting tournament for several years. He has loads of data, but he does not provide any analysis in the book. He refers to his research in footnotes, but no explanation or description at all. Instead we get statements like 80% of superforecasters are more intelligent than average. What is wrong with running a regression to find out what characteristics are important? Why spend five chapters going through the characteristics of superforecasters? In the end, apparently, two characteristics stand out. (1) Continual updating of forecasts, (2) Being intelligent. That fact is told after around 200 pages of tedious writing. Wtf? I can reluctantly accept dumbing down the book, but it is inexcusable that the footnotes does not include some further help to the reader that wants more depth.The author likes to give minute details of the superforcasters. Personally, I don't care that Brian likes Facebook updates of cats, that John is retired because he is sick and that he now likes to collect stuff or that Steve is and old colleague of the author that likes opera. Who reads and enjoy this written muzak? It goes on chapter after chapter. We "meet" 15-20 superforecasters.There is a lot about the superforecasters in the book, but the title of the book is "Superforecasting". This is a seriously misleading title. It makes you believe that you will learn tools to become a great forecaster. You get some, mostly general, points in an eight page appendix. With the researcher's experience, I would have expected a lot of practical advice.What is good about the book?(1) The key message that experts are lousy forecasters and do not want accountability is very important, but that was already in the author's earlier book.(2) Some useful anecdotes that you probably should pick up if you are teaching/presenting on the topic.(3) Odd bits of information. I liked the discussion of how the German military used what we consider modern management already 100 years ago. As mentioned earlier, there are 50 pages of really good material in the book.I bought the hard-cover edition. If you make notes with a normal pencil, be careful because it easily pierces the paper.The book is worth two stars. If you are en educator and want a few anecdotes, read the book. Others should give it a pass. Instead sign up to the author's forecasting tournament. You learn more by trial and error learning. I signed up two years ago and it is a useful experience. You can also check the video features on edge.org. Then spend time reading better books. A few rigorous pop-science books:* Another forecasting perspective is Steenbarger's Trading Psychology 2.0: From Best Practices to Best Processes (Wiley Trading). It is about trading in the market, but it covers many of the topics from a different perspective. Worth reading his earlier books too.* And if you haven't read Thinking, Fast and Slow, that is a more important book (but also too fluffy for my linking).* You should also read Taleb's The Black Swan: Second Edition: The Impact of the Highly Improbable: With a new section: "On Robustness and Fragility" (Incerto), but don't buy his fluffy version of the same topic Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets (Incerto)

The book offers insights into one of the most important aspects of professional performance, being able to predict the outcome of future events - which is of course impossible in most cases. The book does, however, come with very valuable insights - and unless you are familiar with these already - could make you a better forecaster.The key points I found from this book is to force yourselves to explicitly state your forecast, preferably in numerical probability, so that you can easily judge and learn from them when the facts are given. Keep an open mind (ridiculously obvious?). Separate known statistical content from case specific guess work - ie what is general in a case and what needs specific analysis?Although the information provided might be very useful, and I do not regret the read - I think the text is far too verbose and much of the content either repetitive or not very interesting. I kept thinking about Nassim Nicholas Taleb's entertaining books on randomness when reading, until his name appeared in an endless chapter on the critics of the author's work. If you haven't read Taleb's books, read them first - and save this one to your retirement days.

I (Matt) have really enjoyed reading Super Forcasting: The Art and Science of Prediction by Phillip E. Tetlock and Dan Gardner. It's a fun book for taking a dive into forecasting .I enjoyed reading about how forecasters related to weather, politics, stocks, etc. are often considered professionals even though they may actually be amateurs. I also liked learning about how even though these people are often very bad or unreliable at forecasting, it is in many ways a skill that can be learned. While it definitely leans more towards pop-science than going academically deep into the presented topic, I feel like I learned some new information from this book.I do wish there was less fluff and I often found myself wishing for deeper analysis of the years of research the authors kept referencing.If you enjoy books like Moneyball or Freakonomics then I would recommend this book to you.**I received this book from Blogging for Books for free.**

Blending humor and history, Dan's book should be read by everyone in the kitchen, the board room, and even the White House!

As founder and director of the Harvard International Negotiation Program, Dan Shapiro brings to bare a practical approach to conflict resolution in this master piece. One that is based on a wide array of experiences at all levels of society, from his personal life to the community level (NYPD) and from the State to international level (Israeli-Palestinian). After watching the Marrakesh incident on BBC’s The World Debate in an episode titled “Are the Right People Talking?” in which he served as challenger between the Israeli and Palestinian business and political leaders, I am fascinated by his deep experiences with emotionally charged conflicts. Something that he explores with practical examples, suited for students, professionals, spouses, teachers, diplomats… etc.The simplicity with which Prof. Dan handles a complex subject of “me versus you, us versus them” mindset, one that is typical in emotionally charged conflicts, is truly appealing to me as student. He uses the concept of the “Tribes Effect” (mindset that pits your identity against that of the other side) to illustrate how easily it is for people to be drawn into conflicts, be it siblings, spouses, business professionals, diplomats and even experts in conflict resolution. This is exemplified in the Davos experiment in which we see the world explode out of frustration.Professor Dan focuses on “five lures of the tribal mind”, crucial factors that parties to conflicts and even negotiators often ignore or mismanage. If there is one thing that I recommend to all those interested in resolving conflicts that transcend unity, it is for them to read through these five factors – vertigo, Repetition compulsion, Taboos, Assault on the sacred and Identity politics. This book not only tells us how these factors escalate conflicts but also provide practical steps on how to navigate and overcome them.

This work used minimum use of the hackneyed word "ego", which made it unique. It did an excllenet job in explaining that a preceicved threat to identity spawns most conflicts. It even provided good advice in reconciling conflicts, such as finding a common set of values amongst the opposing parties. However, in my opinion, it fails to warn readers do the perils which may potentially arise in cultivating those mutual values. For example, say you find you have something in common with your aggressors. You run the risk of speaking too much about your own views on that rather than inquiring into the perspectives of the other party. This lack of sensitivity may tentatively exacerbate the conflict, and I feel the book did not address that. Consequently, to ge the most of want this book has to offer, it may benefit the reader to concurrently read other books on creating an emotional bond.

In everyday live we all face situations where conflicts can arise. And many times we see ourselves already trapped in a difficult situation where we didn’t even want to go when it started. In my work as negotiating specialist in the Netherlands, I see people then start to push harder and harder on the content and the other side, to convince themselves and the other that they are right and should be heard. And off course the other side of the table will then do exactly the same. Why, because we all want to be heard and recognized for how we perceive, feel and look at the situation. The conflict will be fed, and the longer it will take, the harder it will become to find an attractive solution.Daniel Shapiro did an excellent job in writing this book. It is both theoretical and practical and therefore will help you, in private life, business and politics. It shows ways to get out of the conflict when we got stuck. It will help you finding out what steps to take, how to manage the process in advance and therefore prepare yourself to stay out of conflicts in the future. The last part will ask some time off (self) reflection. What are my beliefs, rituals, values and emotions? How do they form my identity? And how do they interact with the outside world? In my opinion this is an important way to go instead of tips and tricks that in the end are not part of our authenticity and therefore most of time not very sustainable.And don’t we all want conflicts to be solved in a sustainable way?

Bouth this for a gift and my grand son loved it.

Our family is dedicated to St. Anthony this year. We are reading this tale in honor of him. My 3 and 5 year old listen to parts of this story a few times a week. They have enjoyed it, simply told and easy to read. Good reading for an older child to do on their own esp for a book report.

This is a very engaging and adventurous story to inspire both young and old. Drawing on historical tradition and blended with intelligent dialogue, it's an entertaining way to delve into the life of a great Saint and role model.
